LI, NO.20 Dear SLK Parents & Parishioners, As the school year comes to a close, our hearts and minds are filled with gratitude and joy. It s been a great year! Together, we have learned much and shared experiences that are etched in our hearts. The strength of the parish community is a blessing and helps make our school a wonderful place of learning. Thank you parishioners for your devoted support to St. Louis the King Catholic School. As one family, St. Louis the King Parish and School is truly a special place. Special thanks to all to those who have contributed in ways whether it be small or large. From helping with lunch duty, chaperoning field trips, working at Fall Festival and Casino Night, volunteering in the library, attending Mass, and supporting the school in countless ways we are deeply grateful. Thank you for helping us provide a rich and engaging Catholic school experience for all of our students. As our eighth graders move on to high school, our thoughts and prayers will be with them. We are proud of our graduates! They will represent St. Louis the King Catholic School very well no matter where they go. We will miss their energy, spirit, and leadership! You have been a gift to our school! As this may be a hectic time for our school families, let us take time and reflect on this Sunday s gospel reading (John 14:1-12). It is referenced that people can often become very comfortable in their surroundings and tend not to notice little things. In doing so, we may take our family and friends for granted. We sometimes concentrate on their faults and become blinded by the talents and gifts they possess. Like family and friends, familiarity can dull our faith relationship with Jesus. In John s gospel, Jesus took this problem head on. Let us remember to always cherish our relationships with others and remind them of our love and gratitude. There is a chamber also a chamber in God Himself, into which none can enter but the one, the individual, the peculiar Man out of which chamber that man has to bring revelation and strength for His brothers. This is that for which he was made to reveal the secret things of the Father. George McDonald. The above quote speaks to the uniqueness of each human life and the special, individual relationship each of us is invited to enter into with God. Each person is created with a purpose and endowed with the charism or charisms necessary to fulfill that purpose. We have a responsibility to discern what our charisms are and how they can best be used to build up the Body of Christ. As author Lloyd Edwards states in Discovering Your Spiritual Gifts: The kind of work God usually calls you to do is the kind of work that you need most to do and that the world most needs to have done. Lord, while I trust that you are leading me and I know that You love me, I am sometimes overwhelmed or uncertain about my future and am unsure about where I am headed. I know that there is a plan for me and a mission for me that is not exactly like any other. Lead me forward one day at a time. Open my heart as I continue to search, to discover the choices, to listen to others, and to pay attention to my own feelings. I trust that in Your time I will hear Your call to a direction, to a lifestyle, that will let me love others and serve You in the best way I can, using the special gifts You have given me. I know Lord, that You who took care of me yesterday and today and will take care of me all the days of my life. In You is my hope. Amen. Ms. Laura Ray, our 8th Grade teacher, Mrs. Saundra Baldonado, our Kindergarten aid, Mrs. Diana Stickney, our Spanish teacher and resource aid, and Marti Nunez who has worked in our daycare program. We want to express our gratitude to each of these wonderful people for the love, heart and spirit they have brought to our school and parish. We wish them all the best in their new adventures. They will be greatly missed! TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION Eastern Christians have no sacrament of confirmation, but they have always had the custom of richly anointing the newly baptized in myron, or sacred chrism. They also give even infants a taste of the Precious Blood, thereby doing away with any notion of First Communion in later childhood. In the West, although we too have an anointing with chrism for the newly baptized, for centuries we have normally reserved a second anointing for the bishop, sometimes many years after baptism. There are many reasons for this, not the least of which is the fact that in early times the bishop was the ordinary person to officiate at baptism, not the presybyter (priest). The bishop did it all, from plunging the catechumens into the font, to pouring chrism over them, to immediately celebrating the Eucharist. When bishops began to cede some of their ministry to the ranks of presbyters, they desired to maintain a strong relationship with baptism. Thus it was decided that the solemn post baptismal anointing, the laying on of hands, and the prayer for the gifts of the Holy Spirit were to be detached from infant baptism. So, to the present day, we have two anointings after baptism: one by the priest, and the other normally by the bishop. Juan 14:6 VOLUME LI, NO 20 Estimados Padres y Parroquianos de San Luis Rey, Al terminar el año escolar, nuestras mentes y nuestro corazón están llenos de gratitud y alegría a sido un gran año! Juntos hemos aprendido mucho y compartido experiencias que guidamos en nuestro corazones. La fuerza de la comunidad parroquial es una bendición y ayuda a que nuestra escuela sea un lugar maravilloso de aprendizaje. Gracias a ustedes parroquianos por su apoyo y devoción a la escuela San Luis Rey. Como una familia San Luis Rey y escuela es de verdad un lugar especial un agradecimiento muy especial a todos aquellos que han contribuido en cualquier manera ya sea mucho a pop, de ayudar con el almuerzo, acompañante en los viajes, trabajando en los festivales o noche de casino. Voluntario en la librería asistiendo a misa, y apoyando a la escuela de varias maneras. Estamos sumamente agradecidos. Se hace referencia a que la gente a menudo puede llegar a ser muy cómodo en su entorno y tienden a no darse cuenta de las cosas pequeñas. A veces nos concentramos en sus faltas y nos volvemos ciegos por los talentos y dones que poseen. Al igual que la familia y amigos, la familiaridad puede opacar nuestra relación de fe con Jesús. En el evangelio de Juan, Jesús tomó este problema de frente. Recordemos a acariciar siempre nuestras relaciones con los demás y les recordará nuestro amor y gratitud. Sr. Rachel TRADICIONES DE NUESTRA FE Después de la muerte de Jesús, los discípulos habían regresado a su antiguo oficio de la pesca para así ganarse la vida, pues no sabían qué hacer. El Jesús resucitado tuvo que pescárselos de nuevo. En su tercera aparición, Jesús pidió a los discípulos que lanzaran sus redes al mar. Estos sacaron 153 peces del mar, número representativo de todas las naciones del mundo. Esta pesca milagrosa que tuvo lugar en Galilea, nos recuerda otra pesca milagrosa hecha en Brasil. En 1716 tres pescadores pescaban en el Río Paraiba y al lanzar la red al agua sacaron una estatua de la Virgen de la Concepción. Después, la pesca fue tan abundante que por poco hundía el barco. La virgencita de 36 centímetros había pasado muchos años en el agua por lo cual había tomado el rico color oscuro de muchos latinoamericanos. La devoción a Nuestra Señora de Aparecida creció hasta que la familia que la había encontrado la dio al pueblo para que en 1745 se construyera para ella una capilla pública.
