3 Sixth Sunday in Ordinary Time February 15, 2015 Pastor s Message February 1, , 2015 Boundary-breaker meets boundary-breaker. After breaking Sabbath work- boundaries by healing an afflicted man in the synagogue, then grasping the hand of a ritually unclean woman outside his family, God s boundary-breaker, Jesus, meets someone courageously breaking Leviticus boundaries by coming to Jesus for healing. Mark calls the man a leper rather than the more humane man afflicted with leprosy, because leprosy did define one as utterly and terminally marginalized. Fear of contamination separated lepers from work and worship, family and friends. Physical repulsion combined with popular theories of sexual transmission precluded relationships. One s sole interaction with society is the distant cry, Unclean, unclean! Until this leper, so emptied of personhood yet obviously full of faith, kneels down (worship), and begs (prayer), saying not, If you are able, like other petitioners, but If you wish. In the leper s mind, there is no doubt. Thus, in Jesus heart, no hesitation. Deeds before words. Stretching out his hand, as if bridging the infinite distance between observant Jew and despised outsider, Jesus eliminates ritual boundaries and social separation completely and forever. First deeds, Jesus touched him; then words, I do will it. Be made clean. Individual and community. In and through the living person of Jesus, a dead man walking, deemed untouchable, is put back in touch with the living com- munity of God s people. But there s more. Jesus touch transformed not only the diseased individual, but the whole community. For the community itself was not whole until this community member was restored to wholeness and returned to the community. 4 Sexto Domingo del Tiempo Ordinario 15 de febrero de 2015 Del parroco 15 de febrero El rompedor de límites se encuentra con el rompedor de límites. Después de romper los límites del trabajo en el sábado al curar en la sinagoga a un hombre aquejado y luego al tomar la mano de una mujer ritualmente impura y no de su familia sanguínea, Jesús, el rompedor de límites, se encuentra con alguien que valientemente rompe los límites levíticos al acercarse a Jesús para que lo cure. Marcos sólo se refiere al hombre como un leproso en vez de decir algo más compasivo como el hombre afligido con la lepra, pues una persona con lepra era total y terminalmente marginada. El miedo a la contaminación separaba a los leprosos del trabajo y del culto, de familiares y de amistades. La repulsión física combinada con las teorías populares de la transmisión sexual descartaba las relaciones. La única interacción con la sociedad era un alarido a distancia: Estoy contaminado! Soy impuro! Hasta que este leproso desprovisto de su dignidad, pero obviamente lleno de fe, se arrodilla (adora) y suplica (oración) no diciendo como otras personas, Si tú puedes, sino si tú quieres En la mente del leproso no existe la duda. Por eso en el corazón de Jesús no existe la vacilación. Obras antes que palabras. Extendiendo la mano, como haciendo un puente entre la distancia infinita del judío creyente y el forastero menospreciado, y así Jesús elimina completamente y para siempre los límites rituales y la separación social. Primero las obras: Jesús lo tocó ; luego las palabras: Sí quiero: Sana!. Individuo y comunidad. Se puede decir que Jesús le da paso al muerto, pues se trata de un hombre completamente separado de todo contacto humano que ahora entra de nuevo a la comunidad humana y vuelve a formar parte del pueblo de Dios. Pero aún hay más. Jesús no sólo transforma al individuo al tocarlo, sino a toda la comunidad, pues la comunidad misma no estaba completa hasta que este miembro suyo fue curado y regresó a ella. -Padre Moises PARA LA GLORIA DE DIOS La historia completa del pueblo judío va dirigida hacia una meta: que Dios sea glorificado por medio del pueblo escogido. Los cristianos también están llamados a hacer todo para la gloria de Dios. En las Escrituras de hoy Pablo nos recuerda que la mejor manera que tenemos para glorificar a Dios es buscar el beneficio de todos tal como Cristo hizo cuando derramó su sangre por toda la humanidad. La lectura de Levítico explica una manera en que los judíos buscaban el beneficio de muchos, manteniendo a los leprosos y la lepra alejados del pueblo escogido. Jesús encuentra una manera mejor: cura al leproso, que inmediatamente retorna a la comunidad para difundir la Buena Nueva de Jesús a todo el que le escuche. Expostion of the Blessed Sacrament Thursdays, 10:00am to 12 noon with Mass following at noon, and 5:00pm to 6:00pm with Mass following at 6:00pm. FOR THE GLORY OF GOD The entire history of the Jewish people is directed toward one goal: that God might be glorified through the chosen people. Christians, too, are called to do everything for the glory of God. In today s scriptures Paul reminds us that the best way for us to glorify God is to seek to benefit the many, as Christ did when he shed his blood for all of humankind. The reading from Leviticus explains one way the Jews sought to benefit the many, by keeping lepers and leprosy away from the chosen people. Jesus finds a better way. He cures the leper, who immediately re enters the community to spread the good news about Jesus to everyone who will listen. In this way both Jesus and the leper fulfill their calling to glorify the God who fills us with the joy of salvation. Copyright J. S. Paluch Co. TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION Lent, the Church s annual pre baptismal retreat, prepares us to gather around the Easter font, renew our baptismal vows, and receive new life from the water as the elect are plunged into Christ s death and resurrection. This core meaning is more or less available, depending on whether we journey with catechumens in the parish and on the vigor of our liturgical celebration of the Triduum. Some persist in seeing Lent as a lonely journey in the wilderness; yet this week we enter the Lenten fast in solidarity with one another. The smudged foreheads you will spy throughout Ash Wednesday on buses, street corners, and supermarket aisles remind you that you are hardly alone in your desire to enact a spring cleaning regime for your spiritual life. Long ago, this kind of repentance was available to Christians only once. Ashes and sackcloth were not raiment for a day, but permanent habits for public sinners. Fasting became a way of life, and if they sinned severely again, there was no hope of restored communion. Happily, this system did not endure. It produced reluctant Christians who even held back from baptism, like St. Augustine did, out of fear. Today we have recovered an ancient tradition that conversion and repentance are constant themes on life s journey, and that Lent is an annual opportunity to revive our baptismal identity, both as individuals and communities.
