(Courtesy photo) Little Valentina Deleon was born May 25, 2010 an absolute bundle of joy. But when she was just five months old, her mom noticed she wasn t really gaining weight and she always seemed to have a little fever. For four months, the family kept returning to the doctors with the same complaint. Finally, doctors were able to make sense of the symptoms and Valentina was diagnosed with Severe Combined Immunodeficiency (SCID). SCID is quite serious and is considered life-threatening in many cases. It is also known as the bubble boy disease after the case of David Vetter, a boy with X-linked SCID, became well known in the 70s and 80s. David was forced to live for 12 years in a plastic, germ-free bubble just to stay alive. The case of little Valentina, though, is much different thanks to medical advances with the donated umbilical cord blood, her story has a happy ending. The beautiful baby girl received a stem cell transplant on April 18, 2011, which saved her life. Now her mother Edna describes her as doing great and extremely active. The duo have launched Jesse James Leija/Mike Battah Promotions, a San Antonio based company looking to revive the professional boxing presence in the Alamo City. In addition to the March 31 date, the duo also has a card slated for Cinco de Mayo at Cowboys Dancehall. When I was fighting as a pro we had fights here in San Antonio regularly, big fights too, said Jesse James Leija. We had all types of different guys coming in, and since I ve retired there s been a void in big fights coming to San Antonio. Leija explained he teamed up with friend Mike Battah who shares the same vision to bring big-time fights back to San Antonio and show people that this is a premier city for boxing. The team plans on bringing fights to town every two months, something Leija has been itching to do since his retirement in It really means a lot to do it here because San Antonio supported me for over 17 years as a pro, Leija mentioned. Controla prácticamente todo en Venezuela y tiene una gran influencia en el organismo que contará los votos en las elecciones presidenciales del 7 de octubre y aspira a quedarse un par de décadas más en el poder. Pero hay un problema: tiene cáncer. En los primeros días de este mes, el anuncio de Chávez de que el tumor que había sido removido quirúrgicamente de su pelvis era maligno fue transmitido desde La Habana, donde está sometido a tratamiento médico. Y me sorprendió. Nunca había visto que alguien se alegrara tanto porque le encontraron un tumor maligno. Sin embargo, ahí estaba Chávez, bromeando ante las cámaras, hablando acerca de lo bien que le ha ido. Pero está claro que Chávez quiere dar la impresión que está curado, que no hay metástasis, que sí podrá hacer campaña electoral y que gobernará hasta el final de los tiempos. La realidad es esta: Chávez es un candidato enfermo. De qué exactamente? Bueno, esa es otra cuestión. La naturaleza del cáncer todavía se desconoce. Y una prognosis creíble es elusiva, después de todo, él se declaró libre del cáncer el año pasado. Cuando uno es presidente de un país, la vida privada de uno ya no le pertenece, me dijo en una entrevista Henrique Capriles, el gobernador del estado Miranda y candidato único de la oposición, cuando le pregunté si él sabía de qué estaba enfermo el presidente Chávez. Qué queda para el ciudadano común? Qué puede pensar si el presidente tiene que ir a atenderse a otro país? Capriles explica que, por ahora, ha decidido creer la versión oficial del secreto más bien guardado de Venezuela: que Chávez se está recuperando y que regresará. Yo soy cristiano, me dijo vía satélite desde Caracas. Valga la palabra (de Chávez) por delante. A mí me costaría creer que una persona sería capaz de jugar con su salud. Yo deseo que tenga una pronta recuperación y larga vida. Él es la persona que me gustaría enfrentar en las elecciones de octubre. Queremos que él pueda ver con sus propios ojos los cambios que vamos a generar en Venezuela. No tan rápido. La última encuesta de la empresa Hinterlaces le da una clara ventaja a Chávez (52 por ciento) frente a Capriles (34 por ciento). La encuesta fue realizada luego de la selección de Capriles como candidato de la oposición. Pero él le restó importancia. Nosotros tenemos una última foto, aclaró. En las últimas elecciones que hubo en nuestro país, el gobierno llegó a un 48 por ciento y nosotros obtuvimos un 52 por ciento. Y el ex alcalde de Baruta cree que ese resultado se puede repetir en las votaciones presidenciales. Si Chávez utiliza la confrontación y el insulto para atacar a sus opositores, Capriles prefiere la diplomacia y la lógica. Hace unas semanas Chávez le dijo lo siguiente a su contrincante político: Por más que te disfraces, majunche, tienes rabo de cochino, tienes oreja de cochino, roncas como un cochino, eres un cochino. Pero Capriles no le contestó. Esa es su estrategia. Yo no voy a contestar insultos y calificaciones, me explicó. Los venezolanos estamos cansados de la confrontación, de la pelea estéril; de utilizar la confrontación para ocultar los verdaderos problemas que tenemos en nuestro país. Venezuela es el país más violento EDITORIAL - OPINIÓn Por Jorge Ramos Ávalos de toda nuestra América. Tenemos la mayor tasa de inflación y problemas de empleo e inversión, en escuela y hospitales. Imagínate que perdiera yo el tiempo contestando insultos. Si bien Venezuela técnicamente sigue siendo una democracia, creo que Hugo Chávez no es un demócrata. Sí, ha ganado elecciones pero ha destruido el balance del poder en Venezuela, ha abusado de su puesto y hecho las leyes a su antojo, ha regalado a su discreción el principal patrimonio nacional el petróleo y ha fallado la prueba de fuego. Y esa es: está hoy mejor Venezuela que hace 13 años? La respuesta inequívoca es no. Basta ver los altísimos niveles de criminalidad e inflación que están entre los peores del continente y la división en la que ha sumido a su nación. Chávez está herido, física y políticamente, pero va a luchar hasta el final y hasta su última gota de energía. Estos especímenes autoritarios no funcionan a medias. América Latina ha parido a muchos caudillos así y lo quieren todo, todo el tiempo. Chávez sabe que no hay chavismo sin él y, aún enfermo, su único interés está en mantener y acumular su poder y en colarse en la historia. Como me dijo hace poco el ex presidente de Perú, Alan García, hay políticos que no buscan dinero ni nada sino la gloria. Chávez es de esos. El candidato enfermo no se dará por vencido. Ni con cáncer. Texas Supreme Court: protecting aquifers may get more expensive By Carlos Castañeda Government entities (and the taxpayers and ratepayers who fund them) may need to pay landowners for regulating their groundwater usage, according the Supreme Court of Texas. Last month, in the case of Edwards Aquifer Authority v. Day, the state s highest court held that landowners have a property interest in the groundwater in place beneath their land. This does not mean landowners own this groundwater outright, but it does mean that a landowner can sue when his groundwater use is restricted in some way. This decision may have important consequences for how easily (and costly) it is for the Texas government to conserve this precious resource. To be clear groundwater is different from surface water, which was the subject of a prior article and refers to streams, lakes, and other bodies of water found on the surface. Groundwater, by contrast, refers to aquifers and other subterranean water. Once groundwater reaches the surface via a manmade well or some natural spring it officially becomes surface water and is regulated in a different way and by different agencies. This system is not quite as bizarre as it may sound. In any event, the Edwards Aquifer Authority (EAA) is tasked with protecting and managing the groundwater percolating through the vast Edwards Aquifer that lies beneath the City of San Antonio and much of Central Texas. One way that the EAA prevents overuse is by issuing initial regular permits that are required for withdrawing groundwater from the aquifer. This was what sparked off the case of Edwards Aquifer Authority v. Day. The EAA and other groundwater conservation districts are tasked with answering a hard question: who gets what? When a landowner, Mr. Burrell Day (along with his colleague, Joel McDaniel), applied for a permit to withdraw groundwater for irrigation purposes, the EAA denied his request. The reasons why the permit was denied are complicated, but in a nutshell, Mr. Day had asked for too much water. He had requested a permit that would give him the right to use 230 million gallons of groundwater, but the EAA said he was only entitled to 4.5 million gallons. Though he complained that he and former landowners had used the amount requested for years and that the permit denial meant he would have to cut back enormously on his water use, the EAA was firm. Litigation ensued and Mr. Day claimed that the EAA had taken his property without just compensation. In other words, he claimed that the EAA s denial of this groundwater permit was akin to eminent domain. Eminent domain refers to when the government physically occupies or takes actions that totally devalue the property owned by a landowner. This is called a government taking of property and requires just compensation by paying the landowner the property s value. A local government s power of eminent domain is most commonly used to facilitate the construction of roads or other projects for public use (and the Keystone XL pipeline too, which has also given rise to takings litigation). However, in rare cases, government regulations can also constitute a taking of private property. The EAA v. Day decision says that regulating groundwater usage can also result in a taking of a landowner s property interest in groundwater. Crucially, the Texas Supreme Court said the EAA was correct to deny the permit requested by Mr. Day. The EAA had followed the law correctly but it still had to pay (if a taking had in fact occurred, which is a question that the Court left for another day). Just as with eminent domain, a governmental entity s taking of another s property may be legal but still requires paying just compensation. This is cause for concern for the EAA and the numerous other groundwater conservation districts located throughout Texas. These government entities fear a flood of lawsuits by landowners who have been denied permits to use groundwater. Conversely, some farmers bemoan that the Texas Supreme Court s decision did not go far enough. After all, not all legal challenges will succeed and proving that a taking has occurred requires an intensive fact analysis, which may not be worth the trouble considering the cost of litigation. In any event, any added legal expenses of government entities will ultimately be borne by taxpayers or ratepayers. If EAA v. Day does give rise to more litigation, then attentive ratepayers will be watching for increases in their water bills. His place was always the number one pick for burgers. And he was always mentioned as the nicest guy behind it all. Amazingly, as San Antonio has grown and changed and so many restaurants have come and gone, his burger place is still winning awards decades after he started it in In fact, Chris Madrid s won News 4 WOAI s Best of SA title in our latest Best Burgers competition. It s hard to describe the laid-back, informal, vibe of the place to people who haven t been there. And listen to them talk about Chris. Since he died Sunday of an enlarged heart at the age of 61, we ve heard from countless people about what Chris Madrid and his restaurant have meant to them. Employees tell us how he made it fun to go to work. Burger fans talk about loving the food and getting to hang out in such a friendly, relaxed environment. Chris Madrid was a hometown boy who could have succeeded anywhere, but chose to come back home and stay here. After going off to get a degree at UT in Austin, the Lee High School grad decided to open up a place in the heart of San Antonio. As it grew, he easily could have moved it out into some fancy new building (or two or three) in a more upscale, or frankly, richer part of the area. He didn t. Neighbors like Blanca Duran appreciate it. He was just very supportive of our kids at school of my son, of our children just growing up, she said. If kids needed work, they would come in and ask him, he knew they were from the neighborhood, he would give them work. Chris, we ll miss you. But we ll keep enjoying your burgers and your example of investing in the heart of San Antonio and our people. Thanks. Ask the Judge: show up to court on time Every week in Ask the Judge the final line of the column is, lastly, as always, if you are due in court, be sure to show up to court on time. It is in everyone s best interest. Ever wonder why I always use that rejoinder to finish the column? It is simple. It is a gentle reminder to the reader who has been cited for an offense (normally a traffic citation) to show up to their court appearance on time. Failure to do so can cause the defendant grief when they eventually do show up on their own, or picked up on a warrant and taken into custody and eventually remanded to jail. The worst case scenario when someone enters the courtroom whether it is on their own or by personal invitation after failure to appear, they are charged and escorted in handcuffs to the constable s office next door. Unless the defendant make arrangements to pay whatever fine that is outstanding at the time, they very well may be recuffed with their hands behind their back again and escorted in a county van, compliments of a Pct. 2 Constable s Deputy, to the Bexar County Detention Center. The Detention Center credits the defendant time served based on $50 a day. If the citation is for 2-hundred dollars, the defendant could serve four days in jail. In most cases the confrontation could easily be avoided by simply showing up for the court date when summoned and explain to the judge why you are not able to pay the fine. In most situations the problem lies in not paying a traffic ticket fine on time. In these economic times, most defendants are not able to pay the full amount or even a portion of the fine. As Judge, I offer the defendant at least 30 days to pay the fine in full. When the fine is not paid in a timely manner, (within the 30 days) a one-time state mandated $25 late fee is added on to the payment. By Judge Steve Walker The usual excuse someone uses for failing to show up to court is that they have no money to pay at the time. Having no money to pay the fine at the particular time is not a defense. That is when the defendant is encouraged to ask the Judge for some form of leniency. The Judge has the discretion to offer a viable solution. Defendants are encouraged to work with the Judge to come to a viable solution. The Judge will work with you. Not showing up is not an option. Failure to appear can cost a defendant two to three times what the original fine was assessed after they add on various forms of fees. Defendants are highly encouraged to not make the situation worse by not showing up. To end this column I will simply say, Lastly, as always, if you are due in court, be sure to show up to court on time. It is in everyone s best interest. By Kelli O Keefe Do you consider yourself a responsible consumer? A few weeks back, I did a talk on budgeting to a group of bilingual families (mostly moms and daughters) at a local nonprofit. I figured the topic was pretty intuitive until a young lady, maybe about 12 years old, asked me a question Did you budget for college before you decided where to go? Wow what a great question but I did not have a great answer for her because the answer was no. This made me realize how complicated a topic budgeting can be. It really does have an emotional component to it. Sometimes even if we know we cannot afford something, we give it a go anyway and roll the dice. If you default on something, you will not be publicly flogged or humiliated. Worst case scenario, you file for bankruptcy. Bankruptcy laws are used as second-chance mechanisms, a way to get back on your feet. How good are you at telling yourself no? In other words is sacrifice part of your internal dialogue? I think that word is practically taboo in our modern culture, but I do believe it is the key to many spending impulses. I once read how purchasing something triggers an emotional feeling of worthiness. Basically, there is a psychological trigger that occurs that convinces you that you can afford that item or service I ll make it work. I certainly do not have a remedy to budget successfully I do know that it is a problem most of us struggle with, however. What is one to do? I think talking to others before making significant purchases makes sense. When I sold software, we had reference-able clients who could speak on our behalf to answer prospector questions on quality, service and technical issues. I think as individuals we could do much of the same. For instance, if you decide to purchase a car how outrageous would it be to ask for a couple of references? After all, you are spending at least $15,000 or more on this purchase. Think of the commission the salesperson will ring up so why feel badly having him or her work for their bonus? Once you have decided to make a purchase, unless you have inordinate amounts of cash lying around you need to plan how you will make payments and keep everything status quo. Again think of opportunity costs here. Will this vehicle require sacrifice and if so, are you okay with this? I know I am making this sounds much easier than it is. I guess that is because if you could afford a new vehicle you wouldn t necessarily be stressing at the prospect of payments. This process gets complicated once a wrench gets thrown in ex. bad credit report, trade-in not worth as much as expected, etc. That is when you feel pressured and the prospect of impulse purchasing becomes more likely. Sacrifice is the key to successful budgeting in my opinion. If this prospect scares you you re not alone. Por esta razón, recientemente inició un nuevo programa sin fines de lucro que ofrece transporte gratuito para los adultos mayores y sus cuidadores en el suroeste de San Antonio. Este programa lleva por nombre SWOOP (Programas Sociales del Suroeste para Adultos Mayores, por sus siglas en inglés). This one is not called ipad 3, just the new ipad. Apple shook the technology world with the introduction of the ipad just a few years ago. Now, it is on its third revision and everyone wants to know if the upgrade is worth the $499 Apple wants for the most basic model. Mind you there are a ton of wanna be ipads out there being made by most electronic manufactures. Most are pretty good and many can be found for a cheaper price point than the new ipad. So what would make anyone want to jump into the new ipad at this point? Let s begin by comparing the differences between the three versions of the ipads. ipad-1 one has a display resolution of 1024 x 768 pixels and so does the ipad-2. The new ipad has a retina display with 2048X1536 resolution, 44 percent greater color saturation, and an astounding 3.1 million pixels in the same 9.7-inch space. That s four times the number of pixels that are in the ipad-2 and a million more than an HDTV! The ipad-1has an Apple A4 (1GHz) processor the ipad-2 has an Apple A5 (1GHz dual-core) and the new ipad has A5X chip with quad-core. The ipad-1 has no front or rear camera, the ipad-2 has a rear camera that can produce video recording, HD (720p) up to 30 frames per second with audio; still camera with 5x digital zoom and a front camera with video recording, in VGA up to 30 frames per second with audio; VGA-quality still camera, which is a great deal less resolution than the rear camera. The new ipad has a front and rear camera with a 5-megapixel isight camera features a backside illumination sensor that captures great-looking pictures whether by sunlight or candlelight. Autofocus, tap to focus, and with built-in face detection that automatically balances focus and exposure across up to 10 faces, you can t take a bad picture. The new ipad shoots video at 1080 full HD resolution. When it comes to connection speed, both the ipad-1 and the ipad-2 had the ability to operate in the 3G environment using HSDPA 850/1900/2100MHz technology. In addition both ipads could run on a Wi-Fi network at a/b/g/n and Bluetooth at 2.1 with A2DP. The new ipad can run with the big dogs in the 4G LTE networks in the U.S. and Canada. It also works a variety of worldwide network technologies including HSPA, HSPA+, and DC-HSDPA, which are the fastest 3G networks out there. Also for the first time, you can share the high-speed data connection on your ipad, if your carrier supports it, and set up the new ipad as a personal hotspot to connect up to five devices. So the new ipad has a much faster processor to handle anything you want to do with it, sharper display that is even sharper than your HD television, better still and video cameras both front and back that The new ipad. can shoot true HD video and a 5 megapixel still camera, a faster 4G and 3G network capability so you can connect at lightning speed, and all in a frame that is only slightly different in size and weight than the ppad-2. In my humble opinion if you use the ipad for work as well as play, why are you not ordering one right now, if you us the ipad-2 simply for recreation and family use, maybe you can wait for the next version. (Courtesy Photo) City approves grant program for local filmmakers Earlier this week, City Council unanimously approved the San Antonio Local Filmmakers Grant (LFG), a $25,000 grant funded by the City of San Antonio Office of Cultural Affairs (OCA) for local filmmakers ready to make feature-length motion pictures in San Antonio. By Angela Covo angela.covo@gmail.com A result of collaboration with the San Antonio Film Commission, the grant is designed to support local filmmakers who already have $25,000 in funding commitments in place for a feature-length motion picture in the pre-production stage. San Antonio has a great wellspring of creative talent, particularly when it comes to filmmaking," Mayor Julián Castro said. "This is a positive investment that will increase the exposure of the local film industry and the many talented individuals who are involved with it." First-time filmmakers as well as film veterans are eligible for the program. Submissions must be received by June 8, 2012 and will be reviewed by a selection panel comprised of five independent and objective motion picture experts. Applicants will be rated on Artistic & Production Excellence, Commercial Viability, and Financial Position. According to OCA, grant guidelines are based on similar programs in other cities and states as well as input gathered from local filmmakers at two public meetings last November. The date for an information session to provide application details and procedures will be announced soon. Business development goes hand in hand with supporting the arts in San Antonio, OCA Director Felix Padrón said. The LFG program complements other film initiatives the Office of Cultural Affairs has established, including the San Antonio Neighborhood Film Project, which is now in its third year. The idea is to enhance the local filmmaking community and provide opportunities for local filmmakers to produce new works. Support for local feature films is important because it develops long-term production relationships, San Antonio Film Commission Director Drew Mayer-Oakes added. Franco El alcoholismo no respeta niveles sociales. Es una enfermedad tratable, más no curable. En lo que a su servidor respecta, les comentaré algunos desafortunados pasajes de mi niñez, los cuales por más terapia mental que he recibido, no los he podido borrar de mi atrofiada mente. Recuerdo con verdadera lástima el maltrato que mi señor padre le daba a mi sufrida progenitora. Fueron pocas las veces que me tocó presenciar los regaños y acosos físicos que mi padre le daba a mamá. Él no vivía con nosotros, tenía su segundo frente, con cuya familia pasaba el mayor tiempo. En tiempos de zafra venía a Texas a trabajar a los campos de algodón, luego retornaba a casa solo para continuar con sus borracheras y maltrato a su verdadera esposa, mi madre, con quien casó por la ley de los hombres y la iglesia católica. Su presencia me aterraba, ya que él nunca tenía un momento para convivir conmigo, y mis hermanas menores mucho menos tiempo que los mayores. Mi hermano mayor heredó el estilo de vida de mi progenitor. En su adolescencia comenzó a trabajar en la fotografía, empleo que le retribuía buenas ganancias. Por ser hijo de un alcohólico mi hermano no se medía en la tomada. Él hasta la fecha no reconoce ser una persona enferma de alcoholismo. Se le ha confinado a programas de rehabilitación y los ha abandonado. Solo se ha mantenido sobrio por mandato de la corte en el estado de California, donde fue arrestado en su primera vez conduciendo en estado de intoxicación alcohólica. Tras haber cumplido su sentencia probatoria, se mantuvo por corto tiempo sobrio. Volviendo a las andadas, a punto de fallecer cuando él y otras tres personas consumieron licor alterado, con trágico resultado de dos fallecidos, uno en coma y mi hermano quien recibió pronta atención médica logró salvar el pellejo. En esa ocasión mi hermana menor pasó por una larga crisis nerviosa. Esperando lo trágico, ella ya lo daba por muerto. Sin embargo, conociendo a mi hermano, yo la mantenía pensando positivo. Hermana, está situación nuestro padre Dios la va a resolver. Recuerda cuantas veces nuestro hermano ha estado a punto de irse de este bello mundo; sin embargo, El Todo Poderoso no lo ha mandado llamar porque él quiere que nuestro consanguíneo, en vida, viva su propio juicio final. Así le contestaba a mi sufrida hermana, quien además es mi comadre de pila. Ella, a sus cincuenta y tantos años, ni un día ha dejado de pensar en todos los maltratos que nuestro hermano nos dio, tanto en nuestra niñez como en la adolescencia y todavía hoy de mayores. Así es que imagínense lo duro que es vivir al lado de una persona alcohólica, y eso que estoy solo señalando lo que mi comadre y yo hemos sufrido viviendo al lado de familiares alcohólicos. Por falta de espacio, no describo por lo que pasaron mis otras tres hermanas y her- mano menor, quien por suerte es hijo de otro padre. Sin embargo, él no se salvó del maltrato que nuestro hermano mayor ha dado, porque tanto a él como a mí nos llegó a propinar severas golpizas. Nosotros, por respeto, no le contestamos sus ataques. Por el contrario, lo hemos perdonado y encomendado para que acepte dejar la bebida. El lema de mi hermano mayor siempre ha sido Mala yerba nunca muere ; sin embargo, cuando ha causado daño a otros individuos de inmediato se arrepiente y se pone muy mansito. Me ha tocado verlo pelear contra tres personas. Frente a mí, uno de ellos le disparó un balazo a quemarropa, cuyo proyectil entró y salió entre espalda y hombro. En esa ocasión lo llevé a una clínica donde el doctor de turno le dio los primero auxilios, con tan buena suerte que sólo le recomendó darse una desinfectada con alcohol y agua oxigenada, y no beber ningún tipo de bebidas embriagantes. Esa advertencia de nada sirvió, ya que mi hermano ese mismo día volvió a embriagarse, planeando de qué forma se vengaría de sus agresores. Nunca lo hizo, gracias a mis oraciones, ya que le pedía a Dios que mi hermano no se fuera a convertir en asesino, todo por culpa de su crónico alcoholismo. Si en su familia alguien padece alcoholismo crónico, busque ayuda inmediata. Todo programa es bueno, siempre y cuando el alcohólico reciba un trato que no le hiera la conciencia, ya que ello lo orillará a recaer y hasta buscar salirse por la puerta falsa. 17 18 de marzo de 2012 LA PRENSA DE SAN ANTONIO 3-C Sándwiches en Quincy s Deli, un lugar novedoso y hogareño Por Ana Cristina González acgonzalez@laprensasa.com Cuando trabajas en el centro y vives algo retirado, a veces optas por llevar comida, o bien, comer en algún lugar cerca de tu oficina. El miércoles pasado fui al nuevo restaurante, Quincy s, ubicado en el 1012 de la calle N. Flores. Un lugar muy bonito, pequeño y hogareño, ya que está ubicado dentro de una casa antigua. Este restaurante abrió sus puertas en diciembre del 2011, sin embargo ha tenido éxito por su buena comida, el agradable servicio y la ubicación. Iba yo pasando por la calle Flores cuando de pronto me encontré con el letrero del restaurante, pero al ver que era una casa lo único que pensé fue: Algo de especial debe de tener este lugar. Con unas mesitas en el exterior de la casa, sobre el jardín de la entrada, y varias mesas en los que serían cuartos de la casa, pedí dos sándwiches para probar. Uno de los sándwiches lo ordené completo, y el otro como combo. Como Quincy s es un lugar exclusivamente de sándwiches caseros, pedí el italiano y el de atún. No hubiera pedido el de atún si no me hubieran dicho que ahí mismo lo hacen. El sándwich italiano fue el primero que probé, con capas de jamón, pepperoni, pavo, salami, capicola, queso tipo provolone, cebolla morada, tomate y lechuga con el aderezo italiano de la casa. Los sándwiches tienen un precio de $7. No voy a negar que el italiano fuera muy buena elección; sin embargo, el de atún fue mi favorito. Como ya les mencioné, el atún lo cocinan ahí mismo, es decir, no es enlatado. El sándwich está hecho a base de una ensalada de atún a la parrilla preparada con rebanadas de tomate y lechuga. En el combo especial que pedí, con un precio de $10, venía mi sándwich de atún, la elección de Eddie s Taco House Eddie s breakfast specials served ALL DAY! Por el Hermano Pablo El hombre se puso a recitar el padrenuestro: la oración modelo, la oración magistral, la oración cristiana por excelencia. Padre nuestro que estás en el cielo, santificado sea tu nombre... Y las palabras que nos enseñó Jesucristo fluyeron como fluyen las notas del órgano por sus tubos vibrantes. Vez tras vez, a lo largo de setenta y dos interminables horas, David Nymann, montañero de Alaska, recitó esa oración reconfortante mientras vientos helados, de ciento treinta kilómetros por hora, azotaban el monte Johnson. IADT to celebrate 5th annual IMAGINE Show By Tanya Sammis The International Academy of Design and Technology s (IADT) top design students will showcase their fashions and graphic art at the fifth annual IMAGINE Fashion Runway Event and Art Show. The event will be held on Thurs., April 5, at 6:30 p.m., at Sunset Station in Depot One (1174 E. Commerce, 78205). With inspirations from indie art to hip hop, the IADT student designers will rock the runway and the exhibit hall with their collections of graphic art and fashion. The Art Show will begin at 6:30 p.m., and the students art pieces will be available for sale at the event. The Fashion Runway Event will kick off at 7:30 p.m. IADT will be sharing its special night with two gracious beneficiaries. Proceeds of the show will support the Career Education Scholarship Fund (CESF) and local nonprofit The Kristine Meza Foundation (KMF). CESF provides needand merit-based scholarships to qualified students who are attending one of its many participating institutions. KMF s mission is to raise awareness in our community on the impact of domestic violence. The foundation is committed to strengthening individuals through education, compassion and courage and serving as a resource for those dealing with the physical, emotional and mental harm domestic violence can yield. IMAGINE signifies progress and opportunity for the creative minds of our students, said IADT-San Antonio Campus Director Gilbert DeLeon. There are different degrees of lying, and I don t believe that all lies carry the same weight but regardless lying is not cool. I ve told plenty of lies in my life and have felt guilty about it, but I ve found the truth will set you free. Nowadays I d rather just be straight up, feel the wrath of what I ve done and get over it rather than living with that burning guilt in my gut. Now when I say there are different degrees and types of lying allow to me to break it down, The one-up liar (or the whywould-you-lie-about-that-liar). This liar probably irks me more than any other type of liar. Most of the time these people are so consumed with themselves that eventually they don t even know that they are lying. A conversation with a one-up liar goes like this. Me: I just met Mick Jagger, he was pretty cool. One-upper: Oh that s cool, my dad use to party with him back in the 70s, and I got to meet the entire band five years ago. We partied together all night long and Mick said I was his new best friend. Then, he took me on his personal jet, and we flew to London. I didn t make it home for a whole week, and he gave me his pet bird. What? Now if that doesn t sound like a lie, I don t know what is. Pet bird? Again, I ve found that most of the times these people don t even realize they re doing it and they are just trying to sound cool to impress you. A little piece of advice I don t need to be impressed and you sound ridiculous. The liar-liar. This liar usually is the one that does the most damage. The liar-liar is hardcore and will lie about any and everything. Me: I heard you cheated on your girlfriend this weekend. Liar-liar: No I didn t that s a lie. Me: But it was with her bestfriend and she told everybody. Liar-liar: She doesn t know what she s talking about. She wears glasses. Really? The liar-liars will take their lies to the grave and never admit it while hurting a whole bunch of people along the way. Beware of them. The ashamed liar. This particular liar is just sad, but I feel for them because I ve been there. The ashamed liar usually surfaces when they feel like they should know something, should have experienced something or need to sound cool. For instance, if you re talking about the trip you took to Rome last summer then you ask them if they ve ever been they re going to say yes. They do this because they don t want to be left out or feel like they should have done what you ve done. It s odd to think that someone would care so much about something so frivolous but some people just do. The drunk liar. By far my favorite liar because once they get a few adult beverages in their system they ve climbed Mount Everest twice, ran three marathons last year and have slept with more women than Wilt Chamberlain. It s pure entertainment and shouldn t be taken as anything more. The fake-lie liar. Example, I drive a Ferrari. None of my friends would ever believe this because I m a writer and don t make any money. In any event, lying is for losers unless it s purely a joke like I m a plussize underwear model for Hanes. 20 2-D LA PRENSA DE SAN ANTONIO 18 de marzo de 2012 Casa de mi padre se estrena con carcajadas Redacción La Prensa La comedia Casa de mi padre, en la cual el actor Will Ferrell hace su debut en un rol hablado en español, se estrenó el viernes en los cines de Estados Unidos. Casa de mi padre incorpora elementos de telenovelas para contar una historia en un rancho, en el cual el amor, la familia, el amor a la tierra y el tráfico de drogas son presentados. La película está catalogada como melodramática y en el género de los filmes rancheros de México. Ferrell (Step Brothers, 2008) encarna al no muy inteligente Armando Álvarez, quien trata de salvar el rancho de su padre después que la propiedad enfrenta problemas financieros. Su personaje cuenta con la ayuda de su hermano (Diego Luna), quién tiene detrás de su éxito como hombre de negocios lazos con Onza (Gael García Bernal), el jefe de un cártel de droga. Finalmente, para complicar más el asunto, Armando se enamora de Sonia (Génesis Rodríguez), la novia de su hermano. La película fue rodada totalmente en California, pero parece como si fuera México. La gran atracción de esta película es Will Ferrell hablando en español, y con acento mexicano incluido. Para prepararse para este personaje, Ferrell tuvo que trabajar con un traductor todos los días de filmación. Ya que el guión fue escrito originalmente en inglés, y luego traducido al español.
