3 A Letter from Our Cathedral Rector Dear Parishioners, I want to thank all of you who have recently started receiving Holy Communion on the tongue, not to mention those of you who already had been. This subject has generated a lot of buzz over the past few weeks, the vast majority of which has been overwhelmingly positive. While my main objective in encouraging reception on the tongue is to deepen appreciation for the Eucharist, I also have a pastoral responsibility to eliminate abuses common to receiving in the hand. Such abuses are no doubt unintentional. Nevertheless, what I witness every Sunday while distributing Holy Communion troubles me. And I m not alone. In 2004, responding to the problem of abuses of the Eucharistic, the Vatican s Congregation for Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacrament released an official instruction entitled REDEMPTIONIS SACRAMENTUM: On certain matters to be observed or to be avoided regarding the Most Holy Eucharist. The document states: [S]pecial care should be taken to ensure that the Host is consumed by the communicant in the presence of the minister, so that no one goes away carrying the Eucharistic species in his hand. If there is a risk of profanation, then Holy Communion should not be given in the hand to the faithful (#92). Here are just a few examples of profanation that I see all too frequently: 1. Blessing oneself with the Host before consuming it. (Blessing with the Eucharist is called Benediction an act reserved to clergy). 2. Receiving the Host in the palm of the hand, contorting that same hand until the fingers control the Host, then consuming it (resembling a one-handed watch-the-coin-disappear magic trick). 3. Popping the Host into the mouth like a piece of popcorn or candy. 4. Attempting to receive with only one hand. 5. Attempting to receive with other items in the hands, like a Kleenex or a Rosary. 6. Receiving the Host with dirty hands. 7. Receiving the Host, closing the hand around it, then dropping the hand to the side (as if carrying a suitcase) while walking away and/or blessing oneself with the other hand. 8. Walking away without consuming the Host. 9. Giving the Host to someone else after receiving...yes, it happens! We would never treat a piece of gold with such casualness. Yet many treat this Eucharistic piece of God with casualness at best, indifference and irreverence at worst. Of course, much abuse is due to ignorance, owing to poor catechesis, which is precisely why I have written about this issue for four consecutive weeks. Yet we have another great incentive: When we receive Holy Communion on the tongue...every single one of these abuses is instantly eliminated! The way we treat another person speaks more of our relationship with that person than any words we might say. This is especially true of our relationship with the Divine Person, Jesus Christ. So let us continually seek to increase our reverence for our Eucharistic Savior, and to eliminate anything that degrades the respect He deserves. One way we show that we are bringing new life to others is by reaching out to families who are poor and needy and bringing them the love of God through the food we give. When the St. Vincent de Paul Food Boxes are full of bags of food in the rear of the Church, we feel the love God in his presence to others. 8 Queridos Feligreses, Una Carta de Nuestro Rector de la Catedral Quiero agradecer a todos ustedes quienes recientemente han empezado a recibir la Sagrada Comunión en la lengua, incluso a quienes lo han estado haciendo. Este tema ha ocasionado bastante conmoción en las últimas semanas, gran parte de la cual ha sido abrumadoramente positiva. Aunque mi objetivo principal de animar la recepción en la lengua es para profundizar la apreciación hacia la Eucaristía, también tengo una responsabilidad pastoral de eliminar los abusos comunes al recibir en la mano. Tales abusos, sin duda alguna, no son intencionales. Sin embargo, lo que presencio cada domingo durante la distribución de la Sagrada Comunión me preocupa. Y no estoy solo. En el año 2004, en respuesta al problema de los abusos de la Eucarística, la Congregación de el Vaticano para la Alabanza Divina y la Disciplina de el Sacramento, publicó una instrucción oficial titulada REDEMPTIONIS SACRAMENTUM: En ciertos asuntos que se deben observar o evitar acerca de la Santísima Eucaristía. El documento afirma: Cuidado especial debe ser asumido para asegurar de que la Hostia es consumida por el comulgante en presencia del ministro, de manera que nadie se aleje teniendo las especies Eucarísticas en la mano. Si hay riesgo de profanación, entonces la Sagrada Comunión no se debe dar en la mano a los fieles (#92). Éstos son sólo algunos ejemplos de profanación que veo con demasiada frecuencia: 1. Bendecir a uno mismo con la Hostia antes de consumirla. (Bendición con la Eucaristía se llama Bendición un acto reservado al clero.) 2. Recibir la Hostia en la palma de la mano, retorciendo esa misma mano hasta que los dedos controlan la Hostia, y luego consumirla (parecido al truco de magia ver la moneda desaparecer con una sola mano). 3. Colocar la Hostia en la boca como un pedazo de palomita de maíz o dulce. 4. Intentar recibir con una sola mano. 5. Intentar recibir con objetos en las manos, como un pañuelo o un Rosario. 6. Recibir la Hostia con las manos sucias. 7. Recibir la Hostia, cerrando la mano alrededor de ella, y luego bajar la mano hacia el lado (como si llevara una maleta) mientras se aleja y/o bendecir a uno mismo con la otra mano. 8. Alejarse sin consumir la Hostia. 9. Dar la Hostia a otra persona después de recibir sí, eso sucede! Nunca trataríamos a una pieza de oro con tal descuido. Sin embargo, muchos tratan a esta pieza Eucarística de Dios con descuido en el mejor de los casos, y con indiferencia e irreverencia en el peor de los casos. Por supuesto, muchos de los abusos es por ignorancia, debido al mal catequesis, la cual es precisamente la razón por la que he escrito sobre este tema durante cuatro semanas consecutivas. Sin embargo, tenemos otro gran incentivo: Cuando recibimos la Sagrada Comunión en la lengua todos y cada uno de estos abusos se eliminan al instante! La manera en que tratamos a otra persona habla más de nuestra relación con esa persona que cualquier palabra que podríamos decir. Esto es especialmente cierto de nuestra relación con la Persona Divina de Jesucristo. Así que vamos continuamente buscando aumentar nuestra reverencia a nuestro Salvador Eucarístico, y eliminar todo aquello que degrada el respeto que Él se merece.
