Preparing Your Child for a CT Scan Can my child eat, drink or take medicine the day of the exam? We may give your child a fluid called contrast (special dye) for this exam. Your child must have an empty stomach before receiving the contrast. Ask your care provider to check off the correct eating and drinking guidelines for your child. If you do not follow the guidelines printed here, we must postpone your child s exam. If you have any questions about eating, drinking or medicine, call: Minneapolis: Maple Grove: If your child will take contrast by mouth: No food or drink for 4 hours before the exam. Arrive 1 hour before the exam time. Your child will need to drink all the contrast within 15 minutes. We will then allow 1 hour for it to reach the intestines before doing the scan. If your child needs an IV for contrast: No food or drink for 4 hours before the exam. If your child has (or is at risk for) kidney problems, we may need to do a blood test before the CT scan. Tell us if your child has diabetes. Do not give diabetes medicine (Glucophage or Glucovance) the day of the exam. You will need to see your family doctor for a blood test before starting the medicine again. If your child needs medicine to sleep during the exam: Please arrange this with your doctor in advance. Medicine may be helpful with children who cannot lie still for 10 or 15 minutes. Follow these guidelines: Your child must see a doctor for a physical exam within 30 days of this test. No solid food, milk products or tube feedings for 6 hours before the exam. Infants may have breast milk until 4 hours before the exam. Your child may have clear liquids until 2 hours before the exam. Clear liquids include any non-carbonated (non-fizzy) drink that you can see through. For example: water, Pedialyte, apple juice. Clear liquids do not include milk, formula, soda pop, orange juice, tomato juice, prune juice or any juice with pulp. Si usted es sordo o tiene dificultades para oír, por favor avísenos. For more detailed directions, call What will happen during the exam? A CT scan is an exam that takes many pictures of the inside of the body. The pictures are made using X-rays with the help of a computer. We may need to give your child contrast by IV, by mouth, or both. This will help us see inside the body. For contrast taken by mouth: In rare cases, if a child has trouble drinking the contrast, we may have to insert a feeding tube through the child s nose and into the stomach. For IV contrast: We will place a small needle (an IV) in the child s arm. We may use a numbing cream first, if you choose. The dye is given through the needle during the scan. 3 Spanish English 3

Your child will need to lie very still during the exam. How long will it take? The test itself usually takes 15 to 30 minutes. When will I know the exam results? The radiologist (X-ray doctor) will write a report of your child s test results. Your family doctor will discuss the results with you at your next visit. How can I get my child ready for the exam? Explain the exam in words your child will understand. Ask what she or he wants to know. Many children want to know if the exam hurts or what it will feel like. Be honest but calm with your child. Very young children should be told the day of the exam. They do not need to know too far in advance. Talk with your child about the importance of doing what the staff asks. Bring along a blanket, toys, a pacifier or favorite books to provide comfort during the test. Please arrange care for your other children so that you are there for your child during the exam.
