3 Friendly House The Face of a new President The new face of leadership at Friendly House is not so new. He was raised in our Central City South community in the Marcos de Niza Public Housing neighborhood. Mr. Raul Espericueta migrated to the United States in 1966 when his mother, Guadalupe and father, Florentino brought their family of nine children so that they would have an opportunity to get a better education. There were many hardships in the early days, living in a small apartment and then moving into a small two bedroom adobe house. Their family worked hard and it paid off. Together, they were able to own their own bakery, rental units and a small construction company. In 1974 Raul attended North High School and soon found himself in the Advance Placement classes for college bound students. In 1982 he became the first member of his family to receive a college diploma and two years later, he achieved another first by obtaining a graduate degree. His life has been dedicated to helping others working in various positions in the social service field. He taught at Arizona State University in the Graduate School of Social Work but most recently he served as the President and Chief Executive Officer of Esperanza, an international organization serving the poor in South and Central America, Mexico and Africa. As of January 2011, Mr. Raul Espericueta has become the new President and Chief Executive Officer of Friendly House, Inc. an organization in our neighborhood that has helped people become successful and independent since Raul Espericueta Welcome Home! 11 HOUSING Krohn West Revitalization Project The Krohn West HOPE VI Revitalization Project is progressing and ahead of schedule! The newly constructed apartments should be ready for occupancy early summer The City of Phoenix Housing Department partnered with McCormack Baron Salazar to build this site. Adolfson & Peterson is the general contractor. McCormack Baron Ragan will be the property managers. The original site was named after Rabi A.L. Krohn. Rabi Krohn earned respect as a civic leader, working tirelessly on behalf of the poor. He played key roles not only in developing Jewish religious life in the community but also in helping to shape civic culture by being active in support of the creation of the Phoenix Symphony, the city s art museum, and the community s United Way structure. In keeping with his work the name for the new development is The Symphony Apartments, a community living in harmony. The development will have 83 apartments. Residents who lived at the original Krohn West site when the City was awarded the HOPE VI Grant will have the first priority to rent the apartments. The site base waiting list should be open mid April for others who are interested in moving to the development. 13 TRANSPORTATION Buckeye Road and 7 th Avenue Crosswalk Study As part of the Transportation Strategy in the Quality of Life Plan (QLP) designed by residents of Central City South, Phoenix Revitalization Corporation (PRC) has conducted a survey regarding the crosswalk on 7 th Ave. and Buckeye Rd. The purpose of the survey was to gather information about resident s habits when crossing the street. The information was used in preparation for a meeting with the City of Phoenix Streets Department that took place March 16, The morning of March 16 th, three City of Phoenix officials from the Streets Department; Dale Morey- Signal System Specialist I, Doug Kirkman-Street Transportation-Street Maintenance and Steve Harding- Street Transportation-Street Maintenance came to Central City South and met with residents from City of Phoenix HOPE VI Senior Towers and members of City of Phoenix Seniors Opportunity West (SOW). They were investigating the possibility of extending the walking time to address the safety concerns of community members using this crosswalk. The city officials explained how the lights work and what can cause shorter or longer walking time, for example the presence of a left arrow could shorten the walking time. Although initial testing indicated there was ample time for those that participated in the testing, some small adjustments might be necessary including further education for our residents on how to take precautions when crossing the street and walking through your neighborhood. PRC would like to thank the City of Phoenix Streets Department for responding to our concerns and coming out to aid our community. Also, to the staff at City of Phoenix HOPE VI and City of Phoenix SOW for assisting us in coordinating this project and a special thanks to the members from both SOW and residents of HOPE VI Senior Towers that have been working with PRC towards this goal.
