3 Week of February 19, 2012 Mensaje del Párroco Message from the Pastor Dear friends, Are we still going to have Posadas? the look of panic set in her eyes as she asked me about the future of leadership in our parish. Of course, I imagine the parish will still celebrate Posadas, I replied, the parish is committed to accompanying the poor in the neighborhood, and it is dependent on your creative leadership. The parish member was referring however to what happens when a new Claretian pastor arrives at the parish this fall. I also know it is important the religious continue to accompany these developments. The other day, the Parish Council met together for their monthly meeting. I always enjoy these opportunities because it is a group of leaders committed to a vision of hospitality, service and reflection. I learn so much from these leaders about hope and commitment. As I listened it became more and more evident that they are committed to a positive outlook and one that will not only welcome the new pastor, but an outlook that will remain full of service and hope. The neighborhood is challenging: the Council must focus not only on new leadership, but also on how the parish will continue to serve youth, those affected by domestic violence, and those affected by our unjust national immigration policy. The many volunteers and staff who listen and accompany the poor must continue to advocate for those in need. They must continue to create new opportunities as well. All of this energy brings life to the liturgy and the mission of the church. Fr. Hector made a wonderful point to the Council: the Claretians are missionaries, and as missionaries they are servant leaders. They work together and they attend meetings together to discuss the same common mission, in a very similar language. They all proclaim with their founder, St. Anthony Mary Claret, the love of Christ impels us. They are on fire with love and will use whatever means is necessary to live the missionary spirit. And while Pastors are different, they are missionaries always and we are brothers in Christ. We also know that the mission of this parish was born with the first immigrants who built the community of Holy Cross/Immaculate Heart of Mary. Our ancestors left their countries of origin, suffering hardships, and they often had to leave a place they loved, often a family they held close, in order to survive and find a new life. They lived with hope. They served others. They lived a great commitment to build a community, a family. So too, we all are called to that same spirit to journey on ahead, wherever we go, knowing we will arrive at a better place in fact, at least in one way, we re-enact the journey every year during the Posadas celebration, so that we remember and not forget the hope we have and the love we share, Sincerely, Fr. Bruce Wellems, CMF Page Three Queridos amigos y queridas amigas: Una de las señoras que forman parte del Consejo Parroquial me preguntó el otro día con un cierto temor en sus ojos si íbamos a seguir teniendo las Posadas en la parroquia con el nuevo párroco. Desde luego, respondí, creo que las seguiremos teniendo. La parroquia está comprometida en estar cerca de los más pobres del barrio y eso depende sobre todo de la capacidad de sus líderes de ser creativos. Aquella mujer se refería a lo que podría suceder cuando en otoño llegase el nuevo párroco claretiano. Creo que es importante que los religiosos acompañen esos eventos. El otro día el Consejo Parroquial tuvo su reunión mensual. Esas reunión siempre han sido buenas para mí porque encuentro en ellas un grupo de líderes comprometidos con vivir la hospitalidad y el servicio y en la reflexión en común. He aprendido mucho de ellos sobre lo que es la esperanza y el compromiso. Según les iba escuchando, me quedaba cada vez más claro que tienen una actitud positiva y que no sólo van a acoger de maravilla al nuevo párroco sino que seguirán fieles en su compromiso de servicio y esperanza. El barrio supone todo un desafío. El Consejo no sólo se debe centrar en ayudar al nuevo párroco sino también en cómo la parroquia va a seguir atendiendo a los jóvenes, a los que sufren por la violencia doméstica y a los que se ven afectados por la injusta política nacional de inmigración. Los muchos voluntarios y el equipo que escuchan y acompañan a los pobres deben seguir defendiendo a los que lo necesiten. Y deben seguir poniendo sobre la mesa nuevas ideas para ayudarlos. Toda esa energía es lo que hará que la liturgia y la misión de la iglesia estén vivas de verdad. El P. Héctor dijo algo importante para el Consejo: los Claretianos son misioneros y como tales, están para servir a los demás. Trabajan juntos y se reúnen para dialogar sobre la misma y común misión. Tienen el mismo lenguaje. Todos ellos proclaman con su fundador, San Antonio María Claret que el amor de Cristo les urge. Están fundidos en el fuego del amor y usarán cualquier medio para hacer vida su espíritu misionero. Y, aunque sean párrocos, son misioneros siempre y somos hermanos en Cristo. Sabemos que la misión de esta parroquia nació entre los primeros inmigrantes que construyeron la comunidad de Santa Cruz/Inmaculado Corazón. Nuestros mayores dejaron sus países de origen, sufrieron muchas penalidades. Tuvieron que dejar no sólo el lugar que amaban sino también su familia en orden a sobrevivir y encontrar una nueva vida. Todo lo vivieron con esperanza. Se ayudaron unos a otros. Vivieron comprometidos en la formación de una comuni-dad, de una familia. Del mismo modos nosotros estamos llamados a vivir ese mismo espíritu y a seguir adelante, allá donde estemos, sabiendo que llegaremos a un lugar mejor... de hecho, en un cierto sentido, eso es lo que vivimos cada año cuando celebramos las Posadas para que hagamos memoria y no olvidemos la esperanza que nos anima y el amor que compartimos. Many times, we think of giving something up during Lent like soda, candy, or chips. Not a bad idea. But there are other things you can give up like your time for the sake of others another possibility is to take time to address issues that are important to you and this community. One thought is to give your parents a hand. No, not just by doing chores around the house.help them learn about activities coming up in the community: Are there adults in your family needing shots? Are there any kids missing their shots? We know these things cost a lot of money! On Tuesday, February 21, there will be FREE VACCINA- TIONS for adults and children at Casa Catalina, 4537 South Ashland, from 9 am 2 pm. Here s the list of what s available: Flu shots * Td *Tdap Pneumococcal(PCV), * IPV * MMR DTap * Hib * HepA, HepB Human Papillomavirus (HPV) * Meningococcal (MCV4). And what about learning English? Are your parents spending a lot of time at home just watching tv because they are out of work? A better way to spend all the free time is learning English. That will help them get and keep a job down the road. This week there will be registrations for the FREE ENGLISH CLASSES held at IHM hall, 4521 South Ashland: Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, at 9 am. Según la Conferencia del Episcopado Americano, la abstinencia de carne puede suplirse, excepto el Miércoles de Ceniza y el Viernes Santo: *por la abstinencia de aquellos alimentos que para cada uno son de especial agrado; * o por una especial obra de caridad; * o por otro sacrificio voluntario significativo. Si uno se priva de un plato de carne, pero no de su rencor y su deseo de venganza, se ha quedado en la superficie del ayuno. The Church understands fasting to mean eating only one full meal during the day all food eaten the rest of the day should not total the quantity of the one full meal.
