PALM SUNDAY LITURGY: Blessing of Palms and Procession On Palm Sunday, we commemorate Christ's entry into Jerusalem for the completion of the Paschal Mystery. The Palm Sunday procession is formed of Christians who, in the "fullness of faith," make their own the gesture of the Jews and endow it with its full significance. Part I Blessing of Palms We will gather in front of the Holy Family statue between the church and the Sisters convent carrying our Palms. Part II Procession After the blessing of the Palms, the congregation will process to the church through the front door. The Altar Servers will immediately follow the people, then the liturgical ministers, the deacon or lector carrying the Gospel book, the 12 Apostles and the Priest. When the nurses and his brother told him how close he had come to dying, he realized he d been given a second chance, a new lease on life. The new Jim was as different from the old Jim as a newborn baby is from a child in the womb. No longer was he alone and confined in the dark spirit of depression. His tomb of illness had become a womb of new life, releasing him from bondage, giving him a spirit of energy and hope, and connecting him with a helping, compassionate community. When we hear the promises of new life and invitations to believe in this Sunday s scripture it is easy to think of something after we die. But we have already died with Christ in baptism and, like Lazarus, we have received a new lease on life, this time with the Spirit of God dwelling in us. He was raised from his tomb to embrace a new and richer life of following Jesus. Like Lazarus, whose tomb became a womb of new life, we also have new and richer lives to live in the Spirit of faith, gratitude, love, and hope. STATIONS OF THE CROSS Everyone is invited to join the OLPH School students for the Stations of the Cross in the church at 2:00 p.m. on Mondays. 4 EDUCATION OLPH SCHOOL SCOOP During the months of March, April and May each of our classes have already gone or will go on a schoolsponsored field trip. The teachers work hard to select a field trip to make sure the experience ties into the curriculum and supplements what students are learning in the classroom. In addition, field trips enrich our curriculum by exposing students to learning experiences that cannot be duplicated inside the classroom. This year our kindergarteners will attend the Underwood Farms and experience firsthand how the food we eat is grown and how it gets to our table; 1 st grade will get to experience all of the culture and beauty the JP Getty Museum provides with a docent led tour of the exhibits; 2 nd grade went to the Los Angeles Natural History Museum where their Earth Science study of rocks was certainly enhanced; 3 rd grade went to the Griffith Observatory to enrich their study of the sun, moon and stars; 4 th grade gets to learn more about early life in California and pan for gold at the Autry Museum; the 5 th and 6 th grade both went to the California Science Center, the 5 th graders participated in a lab focusing on the properties of gravity and had the chance to use their knowledge gained to build a roller coaster; the 6 th graders had the opportunity to use their critical thinking skills to figure out some solutions to real-world erosion problems; the 7 th grade covered the standards of classification and variation while at the Aquarium of the Pacific and participated in a challenging scavenger hunt on the phylum and order of the animal kingdom and the 8 th graders will attend the Museum of Tolerance where they will have a collective and meaningful experience in the importance of valuing and respecting all humans. We are blessed to be able to provide our students with these experiences and know they will be better rounded students as a result of the opportunities that are provided. RELIGIOUS EDUCATION The Religious Education Department will be closed for Easter vacation from Monday, April 14 th, through Friday, April 25 th. Open registration for new families will begin on Monday, June 2 nd, during our regular office hours. The Religious Education Office hours are Mondays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays from 3:00 to 7:00 p.m. LITTLE CHURCH EARLY BIRD REGISTRATION Our Little Church Program is already gearing up for an incredible school year and we want to make sure EVERYONE is aware of this wonderful children s ministry program here at OLPH! Please know that without the support of parent volunteers to teach the classes, we cannot offer our program, so please consider volunteering so we can keep our program available. All currently enrolled children in the Little Church program can register now. The registration forms are in the Religious Education Office. In addition, the form can be ed to you; all you need to do is send a request to OLPH.LittleChurch@gmail.com. All new children to the Little Church program can register in April and May (except from April 14 th through April 25 th when the office will be closed for Easter vacation). There will be an informational day listed in the bulletin in the coming weeks. THE BROWN ROBES AND THE SCRUTINIES On Sunday, March 9th, our Catechumens went to the Cathedral for the Rite of Election with Archbishop Gomez. They will now be called the "Elect" instead of "Catechumens". Our Elect are preparing for Baptism. They will wear the brown robes during the weeks of Lent. The brown robes are a visual to set the unbaptized apart from the baptized community. The brown robe symbolizes original sin which we are all born into as we enter the world. The brown robe of sin will be exchanged for the white robe of sanctifying grace in Baptism at the Easter Vigil Mass. On the 3rd, 4th, and 5th Sundays of Lent, the Elect will celebrate the Scrutinies. Each Scrutiny is a Rite of Exorcism. The Scrutinies are for selfsearching and repentance. Their purpose is to heal all that is weak, defective, or sinful in the hearts of the Elect. They also bring out and strengthen all that is upright, strong, and good. The Scrutinies deliver the Elect from the power of sin and protect them against temptation, giving them strength in Christ who is the way, the truth, and the life. There is no better time than Easter to celebrate the protection of our most valuable gift from God our children. For information on how you can become more informed and involved in keeping our children safe, and to learn more about the 2014 pamphlet, Working Together To Prevent Child Sexual Abuse," please CO-WORKERS OF MOTHER TERESA We prepare the food in the OLPH kitchen on Monday afternoons and then transport the food in our personal vehicles. The hot food is carried in specially built wooden carriers that keep the food warm as there is no way to warm the food at the shelter. The carriers are showing their age and if any of our carpenters would be willing to build us a new pair or carriers, we would be eternally grateful. TRADICIONES DE NUESTRA FE Vicente Ferrer, patrón de los obreros de la construcción, falleció el 5 de abril de Este santo varón nació en Valencia, España, en 1350, vivió y predicó el Evangelio en una época muy difícil del cristianismo. Además de la peste, guerras y otros problemas sociales, la Iglesia estaba dividida por dos o tres hombres que insistían ser el verdadero Papa. Vicente, un religioso dominico, dedicó su vida a reconstruir la Iglesia promoviendo la virtud de la caridad interna y externa mediante una predicación que relacionaba la Palabra de Dios con la vida cotidiana. Vicente se valía de la teología, poesía, repetición y otros medios para inculcar la sabiduría bíblica en sus oyentes. De esta manera supo construir la fe tanto en los fieles y en la Iglesia como comunidad. Los cuadros de este santo español normalmente lo presentan con una llama ardiente en una mano y en la otra, con una Biblia abierta. De esta manera los artistas subrayan el amor ardiente que los cristianos debemos tener por la Palabra de Dios, un amor que Vicente edificaba en el corazón de los fieles. 9 Francisco, Año Primero: Misericordia, Encuentro y Misión Por Mar Muñoz-Visoso Muchos son los análisis y valoraciones que se han hecho en estos días con respecto al balance del primer año del Papa Francisco. En esta semana que marca el aniversario del comienzo oficial del pontificado (19 de marzo) yo quisiera añadir tres palabras, siguiendo el estilo pedagógico del propio Francisco: encuentro, misericordia y misión. Empiezo con la misericordia, un tema central de su enseñanza. Durante este primer año, Francisco ha repetido una y otra vez que Dios no se cansa de perdonarnos, que somos nosotros quienes nos cansamos de pedir perdón. Ha comparado a la Iglesia con un hospital de campaña que debe acoger y atender a los heridos y moribundos de ese campo de batalla diario que es la vida. Y nos ha dicho que la Iglesia ha de ser como la casa del padre misericordioso, que da a sus hijos todo lo que tiene, y que no se cansa de esperar al que se ha marchado y sale a encontrarlo al camino cuando lo ve regresar. Pero de dónde le viene al Papa Francisco esta sensibilidad especial hacia la misericordia divina? Para entenderlo debemos primero remontarnos a su infancia, al Colegio de la Misericordia en el Barrio de Flores, en Buenos Aires, donde Jorge Mario Bergoglio recibió su educación primaria. La escuela estaba regentada por la congregación religiosa de las Hijas de Nuestra Señora de la Misericordia, quienes aparentemente imbuyeron en el corazón y la mente del pequeño Jorge esta noción de Dios como un Padre misericordioso desde muy temprano. También su lema episcopal, "miserando atque eligendo" (mirándolo con misericordia lo eligió), que luce ahora también en su escudo papal, nos dice que esa lección bien aprendida le ha seguido acompañando en su vida adulta como sacerdote y obispo. Es como sí quisiera asegurarse de que todos entienden que es solo por la misericordia divina que es lo que es y hace lo que hace. En segundo lugar, quiero resaltar la cultura del encuentro a la que está llamando a toda la Iglesia y a la sociedad civil. Esto va más allá de un estilo o una preferencia personal. Sí, al Cardenal Bergoglio no le gustaba estar encerrado en una oficina y en un palacio. Ha vivido siempre yendo al encuentro del otro, especialmente del pobre y el necesitado de quién dice tenemos mucho que aprender pero también del que es o piensa diferente. Sólo en ese contexto de diálogo y encuentro pueden ser las mentes y los corazones evangelizados. Sólo así construida la paz y la convivencia social. La Iglesia, dice, debe preocuparse en formar discípulos misioneros que salgan al encuentro del otro. DOMINGO DE RAMOS Las misas para el próximo domingo serán en los horarios regulares, solamente les recordamos que la bendición de las palmas será 10 minutos antes de la misa en la parte de afuera de la Iglesia. Por otro lado, su propio contexto de religioso jesuita le hace buscar comunidad, prefiriendo la casa de huéspedes al palacio apostólico. Pero también es, a un tiempo, protagonista y producto del contexto eclesiológico latinoamericano donde la Iglesia sin dejar de ser jerárquica posee, en general, un carácter mucho más comunitario y misionero. De ahí en énfasis en los procesos más que en los eventos. Finalmente, quisiera resaltar el tema de la misión. En su exhortación apostólica, La alegría del Evangelio, el Papa Francisco propone poner a toda la Iglesia en estado misionero. Hay que redescubrir la misión como algo esencial a la vida de la Iglesia, de cada cristiano y de cada comunidad. Francisco hace así extensible a toda la Iglesia el trabajo de la V Conferencia General del Episcopado Latinoamericano en Aparecida, Brasil en 2007 en cuyo documento final él tuvo una gran influencia como presidente de la comisión de redacción. Aparecida llama a la Iglesia latinoamericana a un cambio de mentalidad, a entrar en un proceso de conversión pastoral profunda. Esta propuesta de renovar las comunidades eclesiales y estructuras pastorales para encontrar los cauces adecuados para la transmisión de la fe en Cristo como fuente de una vida plena y digna para todos, es la que hace ahora Francisco a la Iglesia universal, comenzando por el Vaticano. Francisco llama a todos y cada uno a un encuentro personal con Cristo. Éste produce una conversión que impulsa al encuentro con el otro y que es incompatible con la indiferencia y con la inactividad personal en la práctica de la misericordia. El rostro misericordioso del Padre ha encontrado un apóstol. En él, enseñanza y gesto se unen; palabra y acción van de la mano. Seguirlo de cerca ha sido a la vez emocionante y agotador. No puedo esperar a ver qué nos depara el segundo año de Francisco. Pero de una cosa estoy segura: su capacidad de sorprender parece inagotable. PAGINA NUEVE 06 de Abril de 2014
