1 MAC NEWS Issue 5 October 31, 2014!Hola Familias de MacArthur! Estamos súper contentos que muchas de nuestras familias pudrieron acompañarnos al evento patrocinado por la PTA, Noche de Calabazas! Estamos encantados por poder ofrecer una noche gratis de diversión en familia. Manténganse sintonizado habrá otra noche gratis para la familia en enero. También muchas gracias a los padres que trabajaron tan duro para planificar las fiestas de Halloween o poder mandar elementos para las fiestas. Los niños se la pasaron muy bien y veían lindos en sus trajes de Halloween. La semana pasada, tuvimos la cena de otoño para la PTA y hemos recibido 2 premios que estamos tan orgullos de ellos! Esto no habría sido posible sin la dedicación de todos los que han ayudado de una forma o otra! Las placas están colgadas en la pared al lado de los paneles informativos de la PTA si desea verlos. Lo que está pasando en Mac Desayuno con los Abuelos- 14 de noviembre- invite a los abuelos a unirse con sus nietos para un desayuno ligero y tiempo para visitarlos en sus salones. Pancake Breakfast/Crafts/ Vendor Fair en MacArthur- 6 de diciembre! Mas información será enviada a casa- marque sus calendarios! Gracias. Laurel McGrath y todos los voluntarios por una exitosa primera Noche de Calabazas. Kristina Knapp por tener información en los boletines y la televisión de la escuela siempre actualizados. Kelly Ridley por coordinar una exitosa venta de manzanas Affy Tapples y por todas las familias que ordenaron. Por ultimo... Por favor considere en volverse un miembro del PTA, muchos eventos y actividades de la escuela son coordinadas y patrocinadas por el PTA, pero ninguno de ellos seria posible sin el apoyo de las familias de MacArthur. Espero que nos puedan acompañar para nuestra junta del 11 de noviembre a las 7pm en la biblioteca de la escuela. Las juntas se llevan a cabo cada segundo martes del mes durante el año escolar. 2 MAC NEWS. 2 CARTA DE LA DIRECTORIA Querida Comunidad de Mac Arthur, Estamos muy contentos de anunciar que la comunidad escolar MacArthur ha sido reconocida nuevamente con un banderín CAN del Distrito 54 por proporcionar oportunidades más saludables para aumentar la actividad y mejorar la nutrición de los niños, el personal escolar y la comunidad. Este reconocimiento se debe a los esfuerzos combinados de nuestra escuela y PTA. Apreciamos el tiempo extra que la PTA dedica para ofrecer alimentos mas saludables para el almuerzo caliente y durante las fiestas en los salones de clases. La Zona de juegos Pacífica pagada por nuestra PTA y recientemente pintada por el Distrito continúa siendo útil para mantener a nuestros estudiantes activos durante el almuerzo. También aprecio el trabajo de colaboración de la señora Lenski con los profesores de Educación Física de Eisenhower, Churchill y Armstrong para tener encuentros en la pista de atletismo motivando a nuestros estudiantes a mejorar continuamente su condición física. Gracias a nuestro personal de Mac por cambiar sus incentivos a diversión en lugar de alimentos y por escoger formas de recaudar fondos más saludables como Jamba Juice. Apreciamos también sus esfuerzos como padres de familia por enviar a sus hijos bocadillos saludables y comidas balanceadas. Trabajando juntos, podemos asegurar que este es un gran año de bienestar y crecimiento físico y académico para sus hijos. A medida que el clima se enfría, asegúrese de hacer actividades en familia tales como barrer las hojas y caminar en lugar de ir en carro a la tienda durante sus quehaceres del fin de semana. 3 NOTICIAS DEL CONSEJO ESTUDIANTIL Muchas gracias a todos los salones de clase por participar en nuestro concurso Diseñando una Bandera para celebrar el Mes del Patrimonio Hispano! Todas las banderas quedaron hermosas e hicieron que nuestros pasillos lucieran muy festivos durante las conferencias de Padres y Maestros! Los salones 117 y 109 fueron los ganadores! Ellos obtuvieron una fiesta de chips y salsa la semana pasada, felicitaciones a ambos salones! El consejo estudiantil ha estado muy ocupado con la organización de nuestra anual colecta de alimentos así que por favor no olviden buscar más información en el próximo boletín de noticias! LES DESEAMOS A TODOS LOS ESTUDIANTES DE MA- CARTHUR UN FELIZ Y SEGURO HALLOWEEN!!! 3

4 RECAUDACION DE FONDOS CON TARGJETAS 4 Nuestra recaudación de fondos con Tarjetas de Regalo dará inicio la semana que viene, justo a tiempo para sus compras de las fiestas venideras. Mas información llegara a casa la próxima semana MARKET DAY PARA LA RECAUDACION No se olviden de recoger sus pedidos de pays hechos en el Market Day para la recaudación de fondos en apoyo al viaje a Springfield de los alumnos de 3o y 4o año, el día Lunes 3 de noviembre de 5:00-6:30 pm en el gimnasio de la escuela. Gracias por su apoyo! RECAUDACION DE FONDOS DE MANZANAS TAFFY Gracias a todos los que participaron en nuestra recaudación de fondos de manzanas Taffy Apple! Fue un gran éxito! Se vendieron mas de 430 manzanas y se recaudo la cantidad de $300! SENATE BILL 16 En la junta del PTA del 14 de Octubre, nos reunimos para discutir el proyecto de ley del Senado Bill 16, un acta de reforma para el financiamiento de las escuelas. Si se aprueba el formato actual, el proyecto de ley podría tener un impacto significativo en nuestro distrito pues podría reestructurarse la forma en la que las escuelas del distrito reciben dinero. Si el proyecto de ley es aprobado, nuestro distrito escolar perdería $12.5 millones. Como PTA, hemos votado para oponernos a este proyecto de ley. Se ha distribuido información sobre como contactar a los representantes de nuestro distrito y se ha fomentado a las familias para que los contacten y les puedan expresar nuestras preocupaciones. Esta semana hemos recibido un correo electrónico de parte de Andy DuRoss, el superintendente del Distrito 54. El señaló que ambos de nuestros representantes, Fred Crespo y Michelle Mussman, han prometido que no apoyarían este proyecto de ley como fue redactado originalmente. Escuchados por nuestro distrito escolar, el PTA y los padres de familia hemos tenido un gran impacto. Eso es defensa en acción. Debemos estar orgullosos de expresar nuestras opiniones y hacer una gran diferencia!

If there is a certain piece of legislation you would like the member of Congress to vote on, know what the specific number is (Senate Bill 16). Identify yourself as one of the member s constituents. Explain to the staff member what it is you are calling about and what action you would like the member to take (e.g., voting Yes or No on a piece of legislation). Feel free to briefly share any relevant research, data, and stories that you might have with the staff member. This will go a long way in your relationship building with your congressional office. You want them to think of you as a resource when it comes to education issues. Try to illustrate the connection between the legislation being voted on in Springfield with the effects it will have in your community. This will help bring the point home to the member and provide further encouragement for their office to take your requests and concerns seriously. Because congressional offices are extremely busy, it is important to be as concise and brief as possible in order to be effective. While you might feel that explaining the minutiae of a bill to the staff member will be helpful, this will only frustrate whomever you are talking to and will likely not help your cause. Be as congenial and polite as possible. Staff members are overwhelmed with angry phone calls, letters, and faxes on a daily basis; being pleasant and easy to talk to will go a long way in getting your voice heard. Be aware and respectful of the fact that the staff member may not have in-depth knowledge about the issue or specific legislation you are calling to discuss. There are thousands of bills introduced each Congress, so be mindful of this fact and do not be discouraged if they are not familiar with the issue or legislation. Always thank the staff member for taking the time to talk with you. Sample Phone Conversation Staff Member: Thank you for calling Representative Crespo s office, how may I help you? Caller: Hello, My name is (your name) from (City and State) and I am calling as a constituent. Staff Member: Wonderful, what can I do for you? Caller: As a member of the Representative s district, I am worried about the passage of Senate Bill 16 in its current form. I urge Representative Crespo to consider opposing this bill. While we need education reform, this bill is flawed and will cause our school district, District 54, to lose over $12.5 million in state funding, which is about $1,000 per student. (Insert information on why you support, in addition to why it is of concern to the member of Congress s constituents. But remember, be brief!) Staff Member: Congressman Crespo has not decided how he will vote on this bill, but thank you 8 for sharing your concerns with us, and I will relay your comments on to the Representative.

9 s s are the most effective form of communication when advocating a Congressional office. Most Congressional offices now have standard forms that can be accessed right from the Contact tab of their website. Tips: Keep your letter as short and concise as possible. Some s can be as short as a single paragraph urging your member of Congress to vote a certain way or to advocate for a certain issue, but letters up to three paragraphs are effective. Make sure the important information contained in your jumps out. You can do this by putting what action you are requesting in the subject line (ex: YES on H.R. 3). Even if the member or his/her staff does not take the time to read your letter in its entirety, they will still have received the message that one of their constituents feels a certain way about an issue. Sample Dear Representative (insert name): As a member of the Hoffman Estates community and your constituent, I would like to encourage you to oppose Senate Bill 16 in its current form. While we need education reform, this bill is flawed and will cause our school district, District 54, to lose over $12.5 million in state funding, which is about $1,000 per student. This will clearly have a negative impact on our students. (Insert your concerns, stories, research, etc. but be brief) (Example) I strongly believe all students deserve quality education. A clear, fair and logical funding formula should be developed. However, this is not represented in Senate Bill 16. This bill does not increase education funding. It merely changes the way the already limited state funding is distributed. Education needs to be fully funded and new revenue needs to be added for true education reform to work. Because additional funding is not being added with this bill, Senate Bill 16 would be detrimental to many communities around the state, including ours. The current solution for those communities, like ours, who will lose a significant amount of money, is to make up the money locally. Given our current property tax rate, how is this a viable option for Hoffman Estates? I know you raised your children here and have called Hoffman Estates home. How do you plan on voting for this bill? What is your take on this bill and what it means for District 54? If you support this bill, how do you suggest our district handle the change in the balance of funds that we would receive? What options do we have available to us?
