Snyder Oficina: Comenius 410 Teléfono: (domicilio: ) Correo electrónico: Horas de Oficina: TWThF 11:30 12:30 and by appointment Materials: Textbook Motivos de conversación, Sixth Edition with accompanying audio CD and CD-ROM Workbook/Laboratory Manual to accompany Motivos de conversación Objectivos: The aim of the Spanish program is to establish the basis of a life-long learning experience in the Spanish language which will include the development of communicative skills and learning about the cultures of the Spanish-speaking world. Students will develop skills in reading, writing, listening and speaking in Spanish. They should be able to handle simple real life situations and simple communicative tasks; ask and answer questions in simple sentences about themselves, their daily routine, and so forth, within meaningful, culturally authentic contexts; and are expected to attain the "Intermediate Low" level of proficiency upon completion of this basic language program. Español 105 will focus on chapters 6 10 of Motivos de Conversación. This course will concentrate on the study and practice of narration in the present and past to talk about daily activities. Asistencia (Attendance). Faithful attendance is required. An unexcused absence will result in a class grade of zero for that day as well as a grade of zero in any quiz or other graded assignment due that day. Professor Snyder will excuse absences due to illness or other emergency only if you notify her before the class to be missed. If you are too ill to call, have a roommate or relative call. No absences will be excused unless Professor Snyder is notified before the class. She reserves the right to request documentation. Absences of more than two days in a row will not be excused without documentation from the Office of Learning Services. If you have an illness requiring extended absence, contact them at X1510. For each absence beyond the fourth,, excused or unexcused, your grade will be reduced one notch : from a B to a B-, of form a B- to a C+, for example. Nota de clase (Class grade). Students must complete all assigned work before coming to class. Students who come to class unprepared will receive a class grade of 50% for that day. Students who arrive late will receive a 75%. Students who come on time and are prepared will receive 100%. Students who do not come will receive a zero. Class preparation and participation accounts for 10% of the final grade. The daily class grade accounts for one-half of this 10%. The other half of your class grade will be the pesos. I will give you each two hundred of them! Then, when I hear you use English without authorization, I will charge you ten pesos, or 5% of your total. If you keep all your pesos, you get 100% for that part of the grade, etc.

2 Cuadernos azules (Blue books): You have received a blue book notebook. Write your name on the cover. On Thursday, January 13, you will hand it in with a paragraph of three sentences on a topic of your choosing relating to your life or your observations. On Friday I will return it to you for corrections and at our next class meeting, you will hand in the cuaderno azul with the corrections done and a new entry. In fact, every day you will either hand in a blue book or get one back. As you fill the blue books, keep them to hand in for a grade at the end of the semester. (N.B.: Be sure to look at your corrections every time you get your bluebook back. Sometimes you will need to do further corrections. If it is all correct, I will write OK on it.) Preparación: You have been given a calendar that shows what we will be doing each day in class. Before coming to class, you are to prepare all relevant material. Preparation includes writing any activities that lend themselves to writing. Writing should be done on a separate paper, not in the margins of your book. Write complete sentences whenever possible. The different kinds of assignments are to be handled as follows: Gráficos. Study the vocabulary, do the activities in the text and do whatever else you have to do to LEARN the vocabulary. Do the Gráficos activities in the workbook only after you have studied the words in all three Gráficos sections of the text. Remember, you need to know the words from English to Spanish. Gramática. Write grammar activities from the text on separate paper. Do the relevant activities in the workbook (manual) and use the answer key. Situaciones. Practice reading the expressions aloud, and prepare to do the role-playing activities. You are not expected to master this material before class.. Write the activities on separate paper, Use the answer key in the back of the book. Cultural readings. Read the small readings ( motivos culturales ) that are interspersed in the lessons and understand them. hispánico. Read the material and figure out what it means. Listen to the audio CD and practice reading the poems aloud. Do the written questions in the workbook. Quizzes and make-ups: There will be a vocabulary quiz part way through each chapter and there will be an end-of-chapter quiz after every chapter. Make-ups will be given only if the absence was excused. See attendance policy on excused absences. If you do wish to be considered for a make-up, you must discuss this with me before the next class meeting. Entrevista oral: At the end of the semester you will have an oral interview with the instructor during which you will be able to show that you have mastered the material during the semester. Examen final: The final exam will be cumulative.

3 Classroom expectations. Students will be expected to show respect for all present by arriving on time, not eating in class, turning off cell phones, and not wearing hats that hide your eyes. You are also expected to refrain from private conversation during class with the persons sitting near you. Check the other links on Blackboard or on my web page accessible through the Moravian homepage You are encouraged to use every opportunity to hear and speak Spanish. Practice with each other outside class. Plan to spend 20 minutes each day listening to Spanish radio (1600 AM) or watching Spanish TV. Such activities will enhance your performance in class and help you to get more out of the course.
