(Audio CD-Rom included) (If you purchase a used text or workbook, try to buy one without writing in it. If your copy has writing in it, you must write out the activities or homework on a separate sheet of paper or in your notebook.) OBJECTIVES: Students will learn and practice several advanced grammatical structures as well as review and strengthen their knowledge of certain intermediate structures in a primarily cultural context. Special emphasis will be placed on the structures of written and spoken language. The course will include brief literary, cultural or historical readings from both Spain and Latin America. These readings will include the grammatical structures covered in each lesson. Course work will include individual and group written and oral activities, grammatical exercises and one oral presentation in class that will be structurally sound, and the topic will be historical, cultural or literary in nature. Grading Exams (3) 35% Graded work (homework, handouts, workbook, group work, participation and writing activities) 30% Semester Project 25% Final Subjunctive Exam 10% IMPORTANT INFORMATION 1. Exams There will be four (4) exams. Documentation will be required for missed exams. In case of difficulty, students should contact the professor as soon as possible by . 1

2 2. Written Assignments During the semester, students will have short writing activities done in and outside of class of 3-6 paragraphs each. If they are done outside of class, they should be typed according to the format for the Semester Project described on page 2 of this syllabus. If they are done in class, students will write them skipping lines. The professor will assign the topics. Students will be permitted to do some corrections to earn back 1-3 points on some of the activities. Corrections will appear in all writing assignments as follows: Green = grammatical errors (verbs, spelling errors, word order, prepositions, etc.), Blue = content problems (vocabulary errors; unclear or insufficient content). An assessment rubric will be provided with the writing assignments for every student to help improve his/her skills during the semester. 3. Preparation / Workbook / Classwork Workbooks will be peer-corrected in class. Students doing the corrections will fill out a check sheet for their classmate that will include the assignments for each Tema, write comments/suggestions in the space provided, and hand them in. Questions about the workbook will be answered at these correction sessions. Students will have one excused workbook assignment and the rest must be completed on time. You may also have several informal (oral or written) assignments during the semester that will be both group and individual assignments. Consistent failure to complete assignments on time will negatively affect the student s grade in the course. 4. En el horizonte y Escala literaria are the cultural and literary reading sections of the text. You will have assignments from both sections. They will not both be assigned in every Tema. When you have an assigned reading, you will be required to answer the questions assigned in the syllabus on these readings. These will be collected and assessed for a grade. The readings will be covered in class in an oral or group activity. Failure to complete these assignments on time on a regular basis will result in a lower grade. 5. Semester Project (una investigación) One paper (composition) of 4-5 pages is required. We will work on during the second half of the semester. The composition must be researched, have two sources from the internet, one of which should be in Spanish, and the tema must be chosen from the list provided by the professor. Requirements: Typed, double-spaced, 12 font, 1 inch margins, upper right corner heading including student name, course and section, and Proyecto Final on the first page, and a compelling title. Please hand the paper in either stapled or with a paper clip. Do not put in a binder or a folder (or dog ear the pages). Students will be required to present one aspect of the paper briefly in a 3 minute (approximately) audiovisual presentation during the semester before handing it in. Presentations are to be spoken, not read. Do not read notes or powerpoints. There are automatic deductions for reading. (Note cards will be permitted for quick reference if you lose your place or forget for a moment). 2

3 6. Final Subjunctive Exam This exam is cumulative covering the structures of the subjunctive. There will be a writing section on this exam taken from the En el horizonte and/or Escala literaria sections in the text. 7. Academic Honesty - You may receive help on all writing assignments from the following sources: your peers in class, the professor, a UD assigned tutor, and the FLLT Writing Assistance Center. You may not consult another professor, a native speaker, a friend, or anyone else who does not appear in the aforementioned list. You may not use any part or all of a paper written for another class. Your presence in this class indicates your acceptance of this honor code. * Bring both texts (TX and CUA) to class everyday. ** Compás vocabulary is found in the glossary in the back of your textbook. ALWAYS look these up BEFORE coming to class. ( is the preferred online dictionary.
