Road Runner News Fifth Grade Edition September, 2010 The fifth grade teachers are delighted to have your son/daughter in our classes. Our expectations are high and we will assist each student reach his or her highest potential. Each student is required to read at home 20 minutes each night. Each reading should be recorded on the Take Home Reader Log or on the Reading Response Log. Reading News The first quarter s focus is Reading for Literary Experience and Reading to be Informed. The students will read historical fiction and non fiction text. Students will begin the quarter with a genre study of historical fiction. We will examine the characters, plot, and the setting of the stories. In addition, students will identify and explain the important ideas, messages, main ideas, and themes in literary text. While reading nonfiction text, students will analyze the different text structures, such as: problemsolution, description, cause-effect, and sequence. We will also write summaries and identifying the main idea. This unit is very important because as students continue in their educational careers, they will be exposed to more informational texts (especially textbooks). Writing Students will write to express personal ideas. The Six + One Writing Traits will be our instructional focus. Please encourage your child to write and share his/her ideas at home. Spelling The Spelling program is the Diane Snowball Spelling Program. The biweekly word list/ spelling pattern will be introduced on Monday. Homework will be assigned Monday through Thursday. Spelling tests will be given on Friday.
Math News Multiplication and Division Facts It is expected that ALL 5 th grade students master the multiplication and division basic facts. A great way to do this is to use flashcards. Please test your child on the basic facts. Grade 5 Math Analyze patterns Analyze number relationships Apply divisibility rules Write algebraic expressions Grade 6 Math Identify measures of central tendencies Represent relationships using graphs and tables Grade 7 Math Analyze and interpret data Use graphical relationships and statistical measures to make interpretations and predictions about real world situations Social Studies The first unit of Social Studies is Citizens in Action: The Colonies Revolt. Students study how citizens created change throughout the United States history by working within or outside of the government. Then we will study the Revolutionary Period to discover how and why the colonist declared independence from Great Britain to create a new political system. Science Force, Motion, and Energy will be the first unit of study in science. Explore the causes and types of motion Explore the difference between potential and kinetic energy Identify how Earth s natural resources provide energy needed for motion to occur Homework Homework will be assigned Monday through Thursday. Please check and sign your child s Student Assignment Book each day.
Data Notebooks The Data Notebooks are in use daily. There is a section for your feedback and signature. Please include a comment and return the next day. Nuestras expectativas son altas y nos ayudará cada estudiante alcance su máxima potencial. Lectura de noticias El foco del primer trimestre es Reading experiencia literaria de y leer para ser Informado. Los estudiantes leerá ficción histórica y texto de no ficción. Estudiantes comenzará el trimestre con un estudio de género de ficción histórica. Vamos a hacer examinar los caracteres, parcela y el establecimiento de las historias. además los alumnos identifiquen y explicar las ideas importantes, mensajes, ideas principales, y los temas en el texto literario. mientras leer el texto no-ficción, los estudiantes analizará las estructuras de texto diferentes, tales como: solución de problema, descripción, causa-efecto y secuencia. Vamos a hacer también escribir resúmenes e identificar la idea principal. Esta unidad es muy importante debido a que estudiantes sigan en sus carreras educativos, se expondrán a textos más informativos (especialmente libros de texto). Cada estudiante es necesario para leer en casa 20 minutos cada noche. Cada lectura debería se registró en el. Take Home Reader registro o en el registro de respuesta de la lectura. Escritura Estudiantes escribirá expresar ideas personales. Los seis + una escritura rasgos será nuestro enfoque pedagógico. Por favor, estimular su niño a escribir y compartir su ideas en casa.
