From the desk of Dear Parishioners, And now for something completely different from the choir loft This past Lenten season we learned and sang the Latin Chant mass which included the Sanctus, Post Consecrationem, Amen, and Agnus Dei. This summer we hope to continue learning the Gloria of the Chant Mass. Why Chant? (from Sacrosanctum Concilium) The Church recognizes Gregorian chant as being especially suited to the Roman Liturgy. Therefore, it should be given pride of place in liturgical services. (from Sing to the Lord) Gregorian Chant is uniquely the Church s own music. Chant is a living connection with our forebears in the faith, the traditional music of the Roman Rite, a sign of communion with the universal church, a bond of unity across cultures, a means for diverse communities to participate together in song, and a summons to contemplative participation in the Liturgy. Who of us has not felt moved to a deeper level of worship when we sing the Tantum Ergo during Eucharistic Adoration or on Holy Thursday when we process during the transfer of the Eucharist singing the Pange Lingua or even the simple yet moving chant of the Litany of the Saints. Like the rhythm of a calm heartbeat, Gregorian Chant fosters peace within ourselves. It s not music for the sake of music, but rather prayer that fosters prayer. It is simply wonderful to be a part of St. Gabriel the Archangel Parish whose congregation not only accepts and embraces the contemporary worship music of our times, but will continue to keep alive our rich heritage of sacred music. For he who sings praise, does not only praise, but also praises joyously; he who sings praise, is not only singing, but also loving Him whom he is singing for.

Small Christian Community Faith Sharing Please note that we put the following week s Gospel passage in this space so you can prepare all week for proclamation of the Gospel the following Sunday. Faith Sharing helps ordinary people connect their faith with everyday life experiences. Excerpt from the Gospel for the Sixteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time, July 19, 2015 - Mark 6:30-34 The apostles gathered together with Jesus and reported all they had done and taught. He said to them, Come away by yourselves to a deserted place and rest a while. People were coming and going in great numbers, and they had no opportunity even to eat. So they went off in the boat by themselves to a deserted place. People saw them leaving and many came to know about it. They hastened there on foot from all the towns and arrived at the place before them. When he disembarked and saw the vast crowd, his heart was moved with pity for them, for they were like sheep without a shepherd; and he began to teach them many things. Commentary: Jesus looks at the crowd with great feeling. They have no one to feed them with the teaching that will give them life or with the physical food to stay alive. Jesus appreciates how vulnerable people are and how fragile their lives are. Like sheep, they will die without a shepherd to keep them together, show them the way and feed them. Seeing their need, Jesus himself begins to teach. He becomes shepherd to the leaderless flock. Jesus calls his disciples to be the kind of shepherd he is. The disciples, of course, will not understand this kind of leadership until after the death and resurrection of Jesus. Questions for Reflection and Sharing: 1. What is God saying to me in this Gospel passage? 2. What word or phrase in this Gospel speaks to me? 3. What word or phrase in the Reflection resonates with me? Info on the September Visit of Pope Francis Farewell Reception for Father René Fr. René will be with us once more on Saturday, July 18. There will be a recep on a er the 6:00 pm Mass. Please come to share your best wishes and give Fr. René a warm farewell Regarding the papal visit, there will be two large open gatherings with Pope Francis on the Ben Franklin Parkway, in front of the Art Museum, on September 26 and 27. Sunday the 27 th will include Holy Mass. These are free events, and will involve possibly millions of people. No one will be permi ed to sleep there overnight the area will be sec oned off, security will be ght, and the gates will open early in the morning. There will be no parking anywhere nearby. Rather, for those who would like to a end, it will involve driving to a designated parking area, then taking some form of public transporta on, then walking a long distance. Certainly, issues of ea ng, hydra on, and bathroom use need to be considered, and it will be challenging. The parish could possibly offer a bus for one or both of the days, but at least on Sunday it will probably not involve the priests, since we will have to go in a different direc on for the celebra on of Mass, a er we have fulfilled our morning du es here. If anyone is interested in ren ng a bus and going together to one of the papal events, please call the office by July 20, and we will decide the best course of ac on. Otherwise, please keep the Holy Father and the World Mee ng of Families in your prayers, for safety, good health, good weather, the event s success, and God s overall blessing upon this important moment for our Church. Algunos fieles llegan incluso a protestar.
