Week of January 8, 2012 Mensaje del Párroco Message from the Pastor Dear friends, As we enter this New Year the memories of December remain with us vividly. During the first days of January I spent time catching up, writing thank you s to the many benefactors who continue to support us. Even as we finish our campaign for Kid s Café and prepare a report, many more people have contributed to the youth programs and parish upkeep. As I write the thank you letters, I enjoy recounting to those who cannot be with us the many images of the liturgical celebrations prepared by our community of faith. The expressions of faith not only communicate our values to those present, but through the many stories and experiences, the expressions remind others of our mission. The memories are enlivening and keep us together. During the Novena to Our Lady of Guadalupe, many groups met to organize the evenings. Several groups prepared remarkable theaters to raise the awareness of others in responding in confidence with actions of care for our neighbor. This includes making our politicians know that we care so they bring much needed resources to the community, including a library and being united in one Ward. The religious education program prepared a wonderful play of depicting the trials and tribulations of Juan Diego as he responded to the vision of the Virgen. Much like the Novena, Posadas was also organized by several groups. Hundreds of people participated each evening, accompanying Mary and Joseph in their search for an inn, and sharing a meal when they reached the parish hall. One evening featured a pastorela play prepared by the Immigration Committee. The people were delighted by the struggle of the devils with the angels as the shepherds made their way to Bethlehem, and the kids cheered when the angels overcame evil. Like the other evenings, the celebration will be a positive memory for a long time. In these days when we begin to prepare leaders to continue the mission with which we are entrusted, the memories will be valuable to recall. We must continue the good works begun by so many people, mostly immigrants who remind us of the value of our family. Sinceramente, P. Bruce Wellems, CMF

Week of January 8, 2012 YOUTH PAGE Page Four Darkness covers the earth, and thick clouds cover the peoples; but upon you the Lord shines, and over you appears his glory. (Isaiah 60:2) Our parish community is proud of our hundreds of children and youth active in our community, who bring God s light to our world, here represented by just a few. Getting back on track in 2012: There will be a Youth Council meeting Friday, January 13 at 6:00 pm in the parish office. So what is the Youth Council? The Youth Council, founded in 1998, takes time each month to evaluate parish Youth Activities, and to plan events that will interest children and youth of the neighborhood. Who can be on the Youth Council? Membership is pretty flexible, usually the members are between 7th and 12th grades. What are some topics the Youth Council is working on? Recently, the Youth Council sponsored events such as a holiday movie and Game Day. Beyond those one-time fun events, the Council is looking at Explore Chicago ways the parish can open up the city for our youth. How can I become a member of the Youth Council? Come to Friday s meeting, or call Sister Angie at 773-376-3900 for more information. The Feast of the Epiphany today marks the end of the Church s celebration of Christmas. The example of the Three Kings in giving gifts is the root of our tradition of giftgiving. But there is more about the tradition than just giving material gifts. Consider some reflections on giving: It s not how much we give but how much love we put into giving. Mother Teresa Think of giving not as a duty, but as a privilege. John D. Rockefeller, Jr.

We are very grateful for all the many persons who contributed to making our celebrations of December so marvelous! Whether you prepared tamales or other food to share the night of the 12th after the Solemn Mass, or you opened your home to a Posadas gathering; whether you brought flowers to the Novena or prepared Hot Chocolate for a procession, whether you offered a piñata for a children s party or you helped distribute song sheets.it is thanks to YOU that our parish is truly experienced as a community! Thank you for sharing your gifts and talents! As you can see during the fall months our collections went up slightly but still under our budgeted amounts. and this makes it more difficult to pay our debts and make the necessary maintenance repairs to our buildings. Our yearly budget is also affected since our goal for our weekly first collection is $4,600.00 and for our second collection it is $670.00. We ask all the parish families to remember their financial commitment to the parish and think about the importance of making that commitment every week. The many programs and activities that we provide to our community are important and vital and need the support of everyone.
