Strengths: The project is of excellent scientific quality on a hot topic of the modern ultrafast science: the tabletop generation of ultrashort X-ray pulses. The proposed approach is highly innovative starting from a recent demonstration of the production of ultrashort X-ray pulses by a HHG process. Both hosts have impressive research records in the field. The outgoing host group and scientist in charge are well-recognized in the field of theoretical modelling of ultrafast phenomena. The objectives of the project are innovative, clear, and well outlined against the current state-of-the-art. The objectives and the related activities are described in detail. Weaknesses: The development of time-dependent high-resolution spectroscopy is not clear, since it is not detailed described how to get isolated zeptosecond pulses from HHG bursts.
Strengths (training): The researcher will acquire knowledge in the outgoing phase in both, theoretical and experimental aspects, and he will be able to transfer it to the host in the return phase. Outgoing and return hosts as well as the scientists in charge can provide high-quality mentoring and guidance towards the ultimate goal to obtain a stable position in Europe, most probably at USAL. Strengths (researcher): The researcher has acquired a very good research experience during his PhD at the University of Salamanca as well as at JILA, where he visited twice. The researcher has very good track record of publications and contributions to conferences. The applicant has demonstrated independent thinking through his capacity to establish collaborations, to lead various dissemination actions, and to suggest research directions. The potential to acquire new knowledge is very high. The candidate has demonstrated a very high career potential. The exploitation of his research potential during the project is well explained.
Strengths (implementation): The available computing infrastructures as well as the experimental facilities are described in very good detail, and they appear to be perfectly adequate for the execution of the project. The project feasibility is described based on a detailed work plan being professional, feasible and convincing, including a career development plan. All necessary practical and administrative arrangements are provided, in particular at the outgoing host where the fellow will have to get settled. Weaknesses (implementation): The research program seems to be too ambitious, and all objectives might not be achievable in only three years.
Strengths (impact): The competencies to be acquired are presented in a synthetic way, and the impressive list demonstrates the very positive impact on the future career development of the fellow. This fellowship will strengthen the links and establish long term collaboration between the two leading research teams. The applicant has demonstrated to posses a vision about his future career and measures to its establishment are considered in detail. The proposed training involves the acquisition of experimental and theoretical skills in a completely new and promising technology, which is at this moment only available in a few labs in the world (JILA, Vienna). The strategic collaboration between US and EU in this particular field can ensure the European competitiveness and leadership in the field. Weaknesses (impact): The outreach activities in the return host are well outlined, but specific initiatives of the applicant during the outgoing phase are not described.
