4 I Dicen que no hay nada como hacer aquello para lo que uno ha nacido, y tener la valentía de llevarlo a cabo. Y aunque nadie dijo que sería fácil, sí satisfactorio cuando uno apuesta por lo que le dice su corazón. Y ese fue el caso de mi bisabuelo, José Ramírez I, el fundador de esta casa, y que fue una pieza clave de la Escuela de Madrid de Constructores de Guitarras. Aunque sabemos que su maestro fue Francisco González, desconocíamos hasta hace poco de dónde le vino la afición. Pero a finales de 2013 supimos que también su otro hermano, Antonio Ramírez de Galarreta, era guitarrero y se estableció en Logroño. Supimos, asimismo, que su padre, Domingo Ramírez de Galarreta y Martínez-Abad, estaba inscrito como maestro carpintero, perteneciendo al gremio de la madera, al igual que Francisco González y todos los guitarreros de la época. Lo que nos da que pensar que, si sus únicos tres hijos varones fueron guitarreros, es muy probable que también Domingo lo fuera.

5 Considerando, no obstante, a José Ramírez I, como el fundador de esta dinastía de guitarreros, podemos establecer la fecha de 1870 como su inicio, que fue cuando ingresó en el taller de Francisco González a aprender el oficio, aunque fijamos la fecha del establecimiento del taller en 1882, cuando José Ramírez I inició su aventura como guitarrero independiente. Formó a grandes guitarreros, entre ellos a su hermano pequeño Manuel Ramírez, a quien contagió su entusiasmo y su amor por la guitarra. Y los que seguimos manteniendo su escuela, después de más de un siglo, nacimos, creo yo, marcados por el espíritu que infundó en su obra. En la construcción de mis guitarras utilizo maderas preciosas que se han empleado tradicionalmente en la artesanía guitarrera, con la excepción del cedro rojo para las tapas, que fue utilizado por primera vez por mi padre, José Ramírez III, hacia el año 1960, al descubrir su característica calidad sonora. José Ramírez II Las maderas tradicionalmente empleadas en mis guitarras son: cedro de Honduras, ébano de Camerún, abeto alemán, ciprés, palosantos de diferentes especies de la mejor calidad. La humedad relativa del ambiente de mi taller está controlada, de manera que se mantiene dentro de los márgenes ideales comprendidos entre el 50% y el 60% que es lo aconsejado para la conservación del instrumento de por vida. El trabajo realizado en el taller es completamente artesanal, de acuerdo con las enseñanzas tradicionales transmitidas por mis antepasados. Yo me encargo personalmente de supervisar el proceso de construcción de cada guitarra. Una vez terminadas, reviso todas las guitarras construídas en mi taller para asegurarme de que están en perfectas condiciones.

6 It is said that there is nothing like doing the things that you were born to; and to have the courage to carry them out. And although no one said it would be easy, it is satisfactory indeed when one bets on the dictates of one s heart. And that was the case of my great-grand father, José Ramírez I, the founder of this house and was a key piece in the Madrid School of Guitar Constructors. Although we know that his master was Francisco González, it was only recently that we knew where his passion came from. At the end of 2013 we knew that his brother, Antonio Ramírez de Galarreta, was also a guitar constructor and that he was established in Logroño. We also knew that his father, Domingo Ramírez de Galarreta and Martínez Abad, was registered as master carpenter, so he belonged to the wood industry, as well as Francisco González and all the guitar makers of the time. 7 However, considering José Ramírez I as the founder of this dynasty of guitar constructors we can establish 1870 as its beginning date, which was when he entered Francisco González workshop to learn the job; although we set the date of the establishment of the workshop in 1882, when José Ramírez I started his adventure as independent guitar constructor. He taught the great guitar makers, among them, his younger brother Manuel Ramírez, he infected him with his enthusiasm and his love for the guitar. We continue maintaining his school after more than a century, and we were born, I think, marked by the spirit he filled his work with. José Ramírez III In the construction of my guitars, I used precious wood of the highest quality, which have been used traditionally in the guitar-building craft, with the exception of the red cedar for the harmonic tops, which was used for the first time by my father, José Ramírez III, sometime during 1960, when he discovered its characteristic sonorous quality. The taditional wood used in the guitars are: red cedar, Cameroon ebony, German spruce, cypress, and different species of the best quality rosewood. The relative environmental humidity in my workshop is controlled, in such manner that it is maintained within the ideal (margins 50% to 60%, which is the advisable level for the lifetime conservation of the instrument). The work performed at the workshop is totally artisan, following the traditional teachings passed on by my ancestors. I personally am in charge of supervising the process to inspect the quality of each guitar. Once completed, I check them in order to assure myself that there is nothing to be corrected in their construction.

This is the model from the 1960 s designed by my father José Ramírez III, applying new techniques to its construction and based on the experience and breakthroughs of the past years. 13 TRADICIONAL VINO Cuando pensamos en el proyecto nos gustó la idea de mostrar una imagen de España relacionada con la guitarra española y el vino español, tanto a nivel nacional como internacional. De hecho, uno de los pocos instrumentos musicales en todo el mundo cuya nacionalidad forma parte de su nombre es la guitarra española. Por ello, en 2010 presentamos la Serie del Vino, pensada como un diseño exclusivo basado en la estética del vino. When we thought about the project we liked the idea of showing an image of Spain related to Spanish Guitar and Spanish Wine, both nationally and internationally. In fact, one of the few musical instruments in the world whose nationality is part of its name is the Spanish guitar. 15 ANTIGUA Nace esta guitarra en respuesta a la demanda de un instrumento con un sonido similar, en algunos aspectos, a las guitarras de principios del siglo XX, y ha sido concebida para adecuarse a la tapa de pino abeto, por lo que se construye básicamente con tapa de abeto, y sólo bajo encargo con tapa de cedro. En estos tiempos en que los gustos en cuanto al sonido son muy variados, queremos ofrecer más posibilidades, centrándonos básicamente en dos líneas: la de nuestra guitarra Tradicional, y la de la guitarra Antigua, que son completamente diferentes en su concepción, en su sonido, color y timbre. This guitar is born as a response to the demand of an instrument with a similar sound, in some aspects, to the guitars that were made at the beginning of the 20th century. This guitar has been developed to fit in with the spruce top, so it is constructed with a spruce top, and with a red cedar top only if it is made to order. Nowadays, tastes on sound are really varied, that s why we want to offer more possibilities, focusing mainly on two lines: our Traditional guitar, and the Antique guitar, which are completely different in their conception, sound, color and tone. 18 CÁMARA Llamamos cámara a una aleta interior, diseño también de Ramírez, que se encuentra encolada hacia la mitad de los aros. Puede aplicarse a cualquier modelo, bajo encargo específico, y la aleta puede ser de palosanto de India, de cedro rojo o de abeto alemán, a solicitud del cliente. Su finalidad es eliminar las notas lobo, y proporcionar un sonido claro, en el que las notas quedan perfectamente separadas entre sí. We call cámara an interior fan, also designed by Ramírez, glued in the middle of the sides. We can build any of our guitars with this fan if the customer orders it specifically. The fan can be made of Indian rosewood or red cedar or German spruce. It takes away the wolf notes, and it helps the sound to be clear, where the notes are perfectly separated between them. The rosewood fan was introduced for the first time by my father, José Ramírez III, with a very good result regarding the cleanliness of the sound. The red cedar and the German spruce fan was introduced by me, adding to the cleannness of the sound a very similar effect to the 10 string guitar. It is an ideal instrument for Barroque and Renaissance music. 18

También hemos realizado pequeñas modificaciones estéticas, siempre de acuerdo con las tendencias de la época en que fue desarrollada originalmente. 35 CONSERVATORIO CLÁSICA La guitarra Conservatorio está totalmente construida en nuestro taller por nuestros artesanos. Es un concepto innovador en construcción de guitarras por la técnica empleada, más sencilla y distinta de la de nuestras guitarras de profesional. La guitarra Conservatorio, tiene un diseño elegante, con poca ornamentación, y sus maderas son de primera calidad para el sonido, aunque no son tan perfectas en su estética como las de profesional, con objeto de economizar su precio. Este modelo se encuentra por encima de nuestra guitarra semiprofesional (SPR). The Conservatorio guitar is completely made in our workshop by our craftsmen. It is a very innovative concept in guitar construction by the techinique used, more simple and different than the one used in our professional guitars. The Conservatorio guitar has a very elegant, sober and minimalist. Even they are built with first quality wood, it is not as perfect aesthetically as the one used for our professional guitars, in order to economize in its price. This model is higher than our semiprofessional guitar SPR.
