1 SHELL TO REMOVE SPANISH SUMMER VACATION WORK In preparation for the Remove, and to give you a good start on your GCSE course, over the summer you need to revise the present tense, including: regular verbs reflexive verbs stem changing verbs 6 common irregular verbs in the present tense All the verbs that you need to learn are attached to this document. You can view, revise and practise the above GCSE grammar and other grammar points on the VLE if you go to: There will be a test in September on the present tense.
2 The Present Tense of Regular Verbs THE PRESENT TENSE This translates into English as I do something or other eg I eat, he watches -ar verbs eg bailar Bailar-to dance Bailar-to dance I Yo bailo We Nosostros bailamos You(singular, Tú bailas You(plural Vosotros bailáis baila es bailan -er verbs eg comer Comer-to eat Comer-to eat I Yo como We Nosostros comemos You(singular, Tú comes You(plural Vosotros coméis come es comen -ir verbs eg vivir Vivir-to live Vivir-to live I Yo vivo We Nosostros vivimos You(singular, Tú vives You(plural Vosotros vivís vive es viven Some examples of regular verbs are: -ar bailar to dance escuchar to listen to hablar to talk cantar to sing trabajar to work llegar to arrive lavar to wash estudiar to study entrar to enter mirar to look at llegar to arrive -er comer to eat beber to drink aprender to learn vender to sell comprender to understand correr to run
3 -ir escribir to write recibir to receive describir to describe vivir to live decidir to decide subir to go up The Present Tense of Reflexive verbs: These are verbs where the action reflects back on the person doing it or you do it to yourself. When you look these verbs up in the dictionary, they will end in se. They can be ar, -er, or -ir verbs. The reflexive pronoun (me,te,se etc) will stay the same but the verb will take the correct endings for its class. Many of them are also radical-changing (stem-changing verbs) Lavarse-to get washed, to wash oneself Lavarse Lavarse I Yo Me lavo We Nosostros Nos lavamos You(singular, Tú Te lavas You(plural Vosotros Os laváis Se lava es Se lavan Other verbs that work like this: Levantarse-to get up Llamarse-to be called Cepillarse los dientes-to brush one s teeth Peinarse el pelo-to comb one s hair Maquillarse-to put on make up Quedarse-to stay Alojarse-to stay, lodge in
4 The Present Tense of Stem-changing verbs The stem or root of these verbs changes in all persons EXCEPT for nosotros and vosotros A common verb is jugar-to play Jugar-to play Jugar-to play I Yo juego We Nosostros jugamos You(singular, Tú juegas You(plural Vosotros jugáis juega es juegan o-ue changes eg volver-to return, go back volver-to return Volver-to return I Yo vuelvo We Nosostros volvemos You(singular, Tú vuelves You(plural Vosotros volvéis vuelve es vuelven Other verbs that work like this: costar-to cost almorzar-to have lunch dormir-to sleep acostarse (also reflexive)- to go to bed e-ie changes eg preferir-to prefer Preferir-to prefer Preferir-to prefer I Yo prefiero We Nosostros preferimos You(singular, Tú prefieres You(plural Vosotros preferís prefiere es prefieren Other verbs which work in this way: Querer-to want Perder-to lose,miss Empezar-to begin pensar-to think fregar-to scrub, wash dishes mentir-to lie
