Message from the president 3 On behalf of the West Michigan Hispanic Chamber of Commerce and its Board of Directors, thank you for your continued support to fulfill our mission of serving as a bridge in our community for Hispanic and non- Hispanic businesses. We serve as a liaison for businesses to network, do business together, learn from each other and continue to prosper in West Michigan. During these economic times, it is imperative that our Chamber continue its mission of helping businesses become successful. It is time to be optimistic and proud of our accomplishments. I am honored to be stepping in as President of the West Michigan Hispanic Chamber of Commerce at a time when the Chamber continues to grow. The Chamber has grown from an organization without staff and a permanent home to having a fully-dedicated staff and housed in its own office, conveniently located in the heart of Grand Rapids. We continue to look for ways to serve our community. We have partnered with other community organizations and businesses to provide educational workshops for members. We are implementing small business seminars on credit, business plans, legal issues and marketing strategies. These seminars are done in partnership with local colleges, universities, banks, credit unions, private firms, nonprofit organizations, private corporations and volunteers. Mensaje del presidente 5 En nombre de la Cámara de Comercio Hispana del Oeste de Michigan (West Michigan Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, WMHCC) y de su Junta de Directores, agradezco el permanente apoyo que nos brindan para cumplir nuestra misión de servir como enlace en nuestra comunidad entre empresas hispanas y no hispanas. It provides inspiration and the more they are exposed to that, the greater their desire to move into some kind of profession. The future for Hispanic professionals in West Michigan is promising, according to Sampedro. It s a bright future, he said. There s a demand for professionals within the Hispanic community and as the population increases, the demand will also increase. While Sampedro thinks every individual defines success in their own terms, he has found what it means in his life. It s helping to educate people, he said, and seeing the light in their eyes when they realize they can achieve what they never thought possible. 9 Join our success Chamber reaches new milestones 7 In five short years since its founding, the West Michigan Hispanic Chamber of Commerce has firmly established its role as a vital organization. From its modest start as a networking group in 2003, the Chamber has built a membership of almost 200 businesses, all striving for one goal to advance the Hispanic business community. The most diverse Chamber in West Michigan in terms of businesses, cultures and business size, the Chamber moves boldly forward to become an even stronger presence within the West Michigan region. The year 2008 marked major milestones for the Chamber, with the relocation to a 900-square-foot office, staff additions and an important new partnership. Through an alliance with Thomas M. Cooley Law School, the nation s largest private law school, the Chamber is now able to provide free legal assistance to members. The Chamber s function as a resource has evolved into numerous relevant programs. Start-ups will find support through personal professional connections to get them on the road to success. When needed, help is offered in Spanish. Educational workshops on topics such as tax credits, how to find the right contractor, identifying fraudulent checks and how to reinvent your business provide up-to-date information. Taught by members, the workshops provide a platform for increasing exposure of both instructors and participants. Western Michigan University Extended University Programs Bridging the gap Zoraida Sanchez had already achieved career success when she launched her tax service in For 25 years, she served as director of Latin American Services in Grand Rapids. Sanchez established the Hispanic Senior Citizen Program and found time to work as a volunteer tax preparer for the IRS. I saw a need for tax preparation for Hispanics, she said. There were none available and many weren t doing it or went someplace where they didn t understand what they had to pay. She began her tax business working nights and weekends from home. After retirement, Sanchez opened an office in Grand Rapids. The first year I had 16 clients, she said. Today, I have too many to count. Nearly 90 percent of her clients are Hispanic. She continues to add services to create a one-stop center to better serve the Hispanic community. In addition to tax preparation, Sanchez offers translation, money transfers, money orders, packaging, airplane ticket sales and cell phone sales. Hackley Providing opportunity to minority workers In 2004, mechanical contractors Dick Ortega and Kevin Fahr launched Alternative Mechanical to provide plumbing, heating, ventilation and air conditioning services to the construction industry at affordable prices and to provide opportunity for minority skilled-trades workers. Beginning from an old warehouse with two employees, the business quickly grew, three years later garnering a prestigious honor. The Michigan Small Business & Technology Development Center named the company the Region # Best Small Business of the Year. Today, Alternative Mechanical sales exceed $5 million and the company employs about 37 workers. Nearly half of the company s employees are Hispanic and African American. I ve worked in the skilled trades for over 30 years, Ortega said. My experience was that they didn t get the opportunity to learn the trades as they did with a minority-owned business. To address the situation, Alternative Mechanical developed on-the-job training programs with master plumbers and journeymen. Those with interest are provided opportunity to learn other skills such as reading blueprints, estimating and welding. The company is accepted as a preferred bidder on many jobs and continues to grow.
