The course seeks to help students move toward some ease in applying, with moderate accuracy and fluency, the four skills: listening comprehension, reading, writing, and speaking. Most course activities address these goals. (See below, p.4, for specific skill descriptions.) The course seeks to consolidate, clarify and expand the students control of grammar and vocabulary. The course introduces students to the cultural richness and diversity of the Spanish-speaking world with attention to geography, cultural identity and current issues. Special attention is focused on the Hispanic community of the U.S. and of our region. Libros de Texto: Repaso: A Spanish Grammar Review Worktext, 2nd Edition. 5 5 RULES, REGULATIONS, WARNINGS & EXPECTATIONS... PUBLIC SPEAKING: The ability to speak in public with confidence and clarity is, of course, an important skill for most careers. It is particularly important in this course, since if you are going to learn to speak Spanish you will need to practice just that. Expect, then, to be asked to contribute to class discussions on a regular basis. You may also be asked to make a modest number of oral presentations during the semester. LAB WORK: Sp 201 carries 4 credit hours and includes 3 hours of laboratory work. This lab work is not arranged on a group schedule but is to be undertaken on an individual basis in accordance with the assignments of laboratory tasks. The Language Lab schedule is currently: Mon Thu 2:00 10:30 pm Friday 2:00 5:00 pm Sunday 5:00 10:30 WRITTEN WORK: Due dates for the regular written work for the course are specified in the above syllabus. Please note that normally work will not be accepted after those dates except by prior arrangement. ATTENDANCE: Regular class attendance is essential for success in language courses. For that reason, a strict attendance rule is in effect: a student who misses more than four classes for any reason, however legitimate or necessary the absence may be (i.e., excused or unexcused absences) may be dropped from the course or have his/her final grade lowered for excessive absence. To avoid any confusion regarding this course requirement, please consult the Student Handbook, Class Attendance Policy. In any case, an absence does NOT cancel your responsibility for the material covered or assignments made during the class you missed or for written work due dates. ACADEMIC INTEGRITY: Integrity and honesty are expected in this course. Please refer to the Wofford Student Handbook for a complete explanation of the policy on academic dishonesty. All work must be completed by the student without outside help unless explicitly authorized by the instructor (such as group work or peer evaluations). Items copied, purchased, or translated on the Web ARE NOT ACCEPTABLE, and any use of these materials will be considered as cheating. ALL SOURCES used in compositions and homework assignments, including electronic ones, MUST BE DOCUMENTED. Please see the instructor prior to preparing assignments if you have any questions. Any violations of the above policies will result in grading or non-grading sanctions. Written documentation of the violation will be communicated to both the student and the Dean of the College.
