1 AP Spanish Language and Culture Summer Assignment Hola! Bienvenidos al curso AP Español Lengua y Cultura. Me alegro que hayan decidido continuar estudiando el español. Les prometo que tendremos un año muy divertido e interesante. Por qué tenemos que trabajar durante el verano? You are being asked to do summer work to familiarize yourself with the expectations and format of the AP Spanish exam while maintaining your Spanish over the summer. The work you will be doing will keep your listening, speaking, reading and writing skills active and will encourage you to develop good habits for improving these skills in Spanish. Please remember the following: Your assignments MUST be submitted on the first day of school August 23, 2017 with the exception of Assignment #3 (Summer project -Oral presentation) that is due: August 29, No assignment will NOT be accepted after the fourth day of school. The assignment will count as a full summative test grade for the first grading period. You are reminded that the use of translators of any kind is absolutely PROHIBITED. If you have any question regarding your summer assignment or would like to your summer work, you may contact me at dgonzales@harmonytx.org Assignment #1 (10 pts.) Familiarize yourself with the exam. 1. Become familiar with EVERYTHING that is published on the AP website about this exam. The 2007 exam was radically different from those administered in prior years and many published materials you might find practice skills that no longer are tested. ng 2. Look at the tips that the College Board suggests for you: 3. When you have done this, please write a short summary ( words) in English or Spanish of what you have learned about this exam. Include some ideas of how you will be able to study best over the course of the year. You can also include your hopes, plans, areas of concern, etc. Bring this summary to the first day of class in August.
2 Assignment #2: Reading (40 pts.) Part I: Select a newspaper from a Spanish Speaking country. Below is a list of some online resources that you can use. If there any other that you want to use, you may do it. 1. Argentina: La Nación 2. Colombia: El Espectador 3. Puerto Rico: El Nuevo Dia 4. España: El País 5. Chile: El Mercurio 6. México: El universal Part 2: After choosing a newspaper, find articles focused on the following AP Spanish Language Curricular themes *You only have to choose four themes of the following list. Las familias y las comunidades La ciencia y la tecnología Los desafíos globales La belleza y la estética La vida contemporánea Las identidades personales y públicas Part 3: Reflection: After reading the article that is related to one of the above themes, write a composition of three paragraphs about the article in Spanish. The composition paragraphs should respond to the following questions: A summary of the article What perspectives shows the article regarding the country and its culture? How you can contrast and compare those perspectives with your community in the United States and its culture? * Use the attached forms to complete this assignment. *Each article and reflection value 10pts.
3 Assignment #3 Writing (25 pts.) Part I (informal writing) Write a note to a friend in Spanish telling him what you did last week. Pay attention to the use of the preterit and imperfect. Write 8-10 sentences. This is an informal letter so you will use the Tú form. Be sure to use appropriate expressions, courtesy, and letter format. Include the appropriate greetings and farewells. Type your letter. Part 2 (formal writing) Write a letter to the editor of the local newspaper. Imagine that you are responding to an editorial that you read in the local paper that was entitled, Los jóvenes de hoy no deben manejar hasta que cumplan 18 años de edad. ( Today s Youth should not drive until they turn 18 years old ) Write 8-10 sentences in Spanish explaining why you agree/disagree with that statement. This is a formal letter so you will need to use the Ud. Form. Defend your opinion with examples and be sure to use appropriate expressions, courtesy, and letter format. Include the appropriate greetings and farewells. Type your letter. Assignment# 4 Summer project (Oral presentation: EL Verano 2017) 25 pts. Start collecting information to develop a presentation of what you did during the summer, and what you had hoped to do, but ultimately didn t. It s much easier to begin now and think ahead by taking pictures of fun or interesting things done during your summer break with friends or family (please keep it school appropriate). A. You will be required to make a power point with at least 10 slides with both pictures or photos and text (in the past tenses). B. If you start now you can practice it ahead of time in order to present a clean, fluid presentation for the class without reading it (which you are not allowed to do!). You may check your pronunciation with a teacher, a native speaker or a classmate. DUE: August 29, 2017
