4 Welcome Grand Canyon University s K12 Outreach serves and supports public and private learning organizations. Grand Canyon University (GCU) leads the design and implementation required to extend learning opportunities by providing access to the GCU Lounge with one-on-one and small group tutoring services for high school students by college student-scholars. The GCU Lounge: Provides one-on-one and small group tutoring services at no cost to the student Offers convenient hours Monday through Friday (3 8 p.m.) Tutors are excelling college scholars in the areas of mathematics and reading Tutors possess high energy and have a passion to serve others Each tutor receives specialized training to assist the high school student Beyond tutoring services, the GCU Lounge offers an eatery, a study area with oversized couches and chairs, a small computer lab and a TV area, plus many others amenities. 5 Guidelines for the High School Student The following expectations have been designed to maintain the safety and integrity of the Grand Canyon University Lounge. Behavioral Expectations The Grand Canyon University Lounge s behavioral expectations are to maintain an educational setting that provides for safe and effective learning without inappropriate disruption. The behavior expectations are as follows: Wear identification card in a visible location at all times while on the GCU campus. Identification cards are required in order to be admitted on the GCU campus and into the GCU Lounge. Use appropriate language and maintain proper actions while on the GCU campus. Be respectful of self, other students, faculty and staff while on the GCU campus. Check-in at the reception desk when entering the GCU Lounge. Talk quietly so as not to disturb others while in the GCU Lounge. Do not use mobile devices for the purpose of phone calls, texts, s and social networking during your tutoring session. Mobile devices may be used at the tutor s discretion for relevant learning opportunities. Do not eat or drink near the computers. When leaving, make sure you have collected all of your belongings. GCU strictly enforces behavioral expectations. Any violation of the behavioral expectations is grounds for dismissal from the GCU Lounge and campus. Additionally, violating the behavioral expectations may result in discipline administered by Bourgade Catholic High School. GCU has zero-tolerance for any behavior that causes a disruption to the learning environment such as but not limited to: aggression of any nature (physical or verbal/sexual or non-sexual), theft, intimidation, disrespect of self or others and insubordination. Search and Seizure For safety purposes, all purses, bags and outer wear are subject to inspection upon entering the Grand Canyon University Lounge. GCU reserves the right to confiscate items which may cause danger or disruption to the environment or other guests, or which are in breach of university or Phoenix Union School District policies and/or prohibited items. Any guest who declines to be searched may be denied entry to the GCU Lounge. Dress Code The GCU Lounge adheres to the Bourgade Catholic High School Dress Code. Bourgade Catholic High School requires that students dress appropriately and conduct themselves in a manner that does not disrupt instructional programs. The dress code of Bourgade Catholic High School has four purposes: 5
6 To foster self-respect To reflect the spirit of the student body To encourage students to dress for professional success To eliminate the competitive differences of economic or social backgrounds Students are required to dress and be well-groomed at all Bourgade functions, including dances, in a manner which represents the school in a dignified and modest way. The school reserves the right to determine whether a student s dress/appearance satisfies the school policy. The Uniform consists of: 1. Uniform polo shirts (navy, gold). Bottom button must be buttoned. Uniform light blue oxford shirts, short and long sleeve; only the top button can be opened. Long sleeve oxfords and polo s may not be rolled past the elbow. The short sleeve oxford and polo sleeves are not to be rolled. 2. Dress shorts and slacks in dark khaki or navy blue. Shorts must have an inseam of at least 8 and must not extend past the knee. 3. Black, brown or white leather or twill belts worn with shorts or slacks. The tongue of the belt must not exceed 3 beyond the buckle. No decorated buckles are allowed. 4. Girls may wear the pleated -LL plaid skirt. The skirt length should extend to the knee. Skirts must have the logo displayed at the hem line. 5. Navy vest with school crest (optional). 6. A School Tie may be purchased from Dennis Uniform and can be worn with the Oxford Shirts (optional). GENERAL UNIFORM GUIDELINES: 1. All shorts and slacks must be properly fitted and neat. They are not to be faded, torn or to have holes. Shorts and slacks are to be worn at the waist. Shorts may be cuffed or un-cuffed, but not rolled. 2. Shirts are to be tucked in at all times, with a minimum of blousing. 3. White or the same color undershirts are appropriate as long as logos are not seen through the polo shirt. Long sleeve undershirts must be the same color as the polo. 4. Uniforms are to be kept in good repair. Faded pants, shorts, worn out shirts or skirts are inappropriate. For modesty reasons, girls may wear shorts/spandex under their skirt. The skirt length MUST be such that the shorts do not show. 5. White, navy, khaki or black socks (solid in color with no logo) or footed tights or nylons must be worn with all shoes. Girls may wear solid-colored tights or nylons in navy, black, white or neutral. Tights must be the full foot length, not Capri or ankle length. 6. Dress shoes, athletic shoes and sandals. Sandals must have permanently attached heel straps. Not allowed: ankle-high or higher boots, shoes with heels higher than 2 inches, skeletoes and slippers/moccasins. Walking barefoot is never permitted on campus. 7. Outerwear: gray Bourgade Catholic crest sweatshirt, navy blue with plaid BC lettered sweatshirt, official BCHS letter jacket, navy fleece crested jacket or the 6
7 crested windbreaker jacket. Hooded sweatshirts, purchased through the athletic department (generic no team sweatshirts) and drama club which display the approved BCHS logo. Jackets may be worn indoors at the discretion of the teacher. Outerwear is bought through the Dennis Uniform, with the exception of the letter jacket and the hooded sweatshirts. A uniform shirt must be worn under the BCHS outerwear. 8. The use of make-up by students must be done in modest taste. 9. Female Hair Guidelines Hair is to be neat and well-groomed at all times. Ultrashort, shaved, unnatural-colored hair or extremely contrasting streaking is not allowed. The excessive use of bleach or black hair dye is not permitted. Fad hair styles/accessories are not acceptable. (Feathers, corn rows, Dred locks, faux Mohawks, etc.) 10. Male Hair Guidelines Hair is to be neat and well-groomed at all times. The length may not extend past the collar, to mid ear and to the top of the eyebrows. Dyed/bleached/highlighted hair must be in natural colors only. Males should be clean-shaven each day. Side burns must not extend past the mid ear. Continued violations will result in further disciplinary action. Fad hair styles/accessories are not acceptable. (corn rows, Dred locks, faux Mohawks, etc.) 11. No hats, caps, visors, hairnets or sunglasses can be worn inside the building. 12. Jewelry If jewelry is to be worn at school, it should be simple and inexpensive. Only one necklace or bracelet may be worn. Wallet chains and other chain like jewelry are not appropriate for school. 13. Piercing - the only piercing that is acceptable is the ears. Only ten and above gauged earrings are allowed. Students may wear two earrings per ear that are simple in style and modest in size. Earrings are to be worn in the lobe of the ear. 14. No tattoos are to be exposed or seen while on campus at any time, this would include temporary tattoos or writing on oneself or others. Grand Canyon University has the authority to determine what appropriate apparel is and reserves the right to modify the dress expectations as needed. Electronic Devices The use of certain electronic devices is permitted at the Grand Canyon University Lounge as described below. Electronic devices are classified as disruptive, nondisruptive and mobile phone devices. Permissibility of each type of electronic device is described as follows: Disruptive Electronic Devices Recording devices, radios, pagers, laser pointers and other electronic devices are deemed distracting to the educational environment. As such, these devices are not permitted. The misuse of permissible electronic devices in a manner distracting to other students or university personnel is not allowed. The misuse of electronic devices includes, but is not limited to: Use of any electronic device in any area not authorized by university personnel. 7
8 Listening to video or audio without headphones or ear buds. Use of headphones/ear buds at a volume level where others can hear. Non-disruptive Devices Non-disruptive devices are defined as electronic devices primarily used for educational purposes. The categories of non-disrupted devices are (a) laptops, (b) netbooks, (c) tablets, (d) e-readers and (e) audio players (MP3 players). These devices may be used during tutoring and in areas as permitted and directed by university personnel. Mobile Phones Use of mobile phones for any voice or text communication is not permitted during tutoring sessions. Mobile phones may be used as directed by university personnel. Otherwise, mobile phones must be turned off, muted or silenced within the GCU Lounge. Mobile phones may possess advanced functions including Internet access, e-reader and video/audio functions. These functions may be used within the learning environment. Use of these functions during the tutoring session is at the discretion of university personnel. Internet Connection Wireless Internet connection may be provided by the GCU Lounge for students to connect their devices to the Internet. Students may connect to the Internet using their Internet provider. In this case, the student and family will be responsible for any Internet connection expense. Devices that cause disruption to the GCU Lounge network may be blocked from connecting to the network. Any personal device used at the GCU Lounge is subject to search. Anyone failing to comply will have the device confiscated until the investigation is complete. Online Synchronous or Asynchronous Communication and Social Networking Student users shall not access or use online synchronous or asynchronous communication applications such as , chat, blogs, wikis or social networking website functions (i.e., discussion threads, document posting, RSS feeds, etc.) during tutoring sessions. Lost or Damaged Device The GCU Lounge assumes no responsibility for theft, loss or damage of an electronic device brought to the University. Students bring these devices at their own risk. The GCU Lounge fully expects that student users will follow these instructions. Students 8
9 shall inform a teacher if they mistakenly access inappropriate information or content. Entering/Exiting the Campus The Grand Canyon University Lounge has policies and procedures in place for students, visitors and walk-ins. Students are encouraged to make tutoring appointments in advance. All students, visitors and walk-ins are subject to search. Identification cards for students and visitor badges must be properly worn and visible at all times while on campus. Students are expected to enter and exit GCU in a timely fashion. Trespassing and/or loitering may lead to criminal offenses. Failure to enter or exit the campus appropriately may prevent further visits or admittance to the GCU Lounge. Identification Cards Students are expected to wear their identification card at all times while on the Grand Canyon University campus. Identification cards are to be displayed above the waist, on the front of the body with photo visible. Identification cards assist staff in identifying and removing non-students from campus. It also helps to maintain a safe learning environment. Identification cards are required to enter the Grand Canyon University campus and the Grand Canyon University Lounge. Visitors / Guests Students are not allowed to bring guests to the Grand Canyon University Lounge. Some social activities will allow student guests with prior approval. Parents and legal guardians are always welcomed at the GCU Lounge with staff approval. They are asked to sign in at the registration counter to obtain a visitor s pass. Visitor passes must be obtained from the receptionist s desk. Student Parking Acknowledgement Lock your vehicle while parking on campus and do not leave valuables in the car. Neither the Grand Canyon University Lounge nor GCU assumes any responsibility for losses from vehicles or damage to them. All thefts, accidents and vandalism need to be reported for investigation to campus security immediately. Vehicles parked on campus may be searched if suspected of containing illegal substances. If students desire parking privileges, they agree not to allow contraband in their automobiles. Additional parking regulations may be added throughout the year to provide safety, security and appropriate operation of the school parking lot. Students are permitted to park on school premises as a matter of privilege, not a right. The university retains authority to conduct routine patrols of student parking lots and inspections of the exteriors of student automobiles on school property. As part of the routine patrols, the University may observe items that are in plain view on the dashboard or seats of a vehicle. Dogs trained to locate illegal drugs or weapons may be used to patrol the parking lot from time to time. The university may inspect the interiors of student automobiles whenever a school 9
10 authority has reasonable suspicion to believe that illegal or unauthorized materials are contained inside the automobiles. The patrols and inspection referred to above may be conducted without student consent, and without a search warrant. Students may NOT loiter nor sit in cars to socialize at any time. A student who fails to provide access to the interior of the car upon request by a university official may be subject to disciplinary action. 12 GRAND CANYON UNIVERSITY VOLUNTARY WAIVER, RELEASE AND ASSUMPTION OF RISK AGREEMENT I, [Name of Visitor or Participant], hereby acknowledge that I voluntarily desire to participate in, observe and/or otherwise take part in the recreational or other activities offered to me by, or located at, Grand Canyon University (hereinafter, referred to as the Company ) at the premises, facilities and on the land located at 3300 W. Camelback Rd. and/or on any adjacent properties (collectively, the Properties ) and/or any off site locations associated with particular events. These recreational or other activities include, without limitation, intramural sports, GCU events, program events, academic related activities, etc. In consideration of the Company s consent to allow me to participate in any or all recreational or other activities, I hereby knowingly, freely and voluntarily agree to waive, release and discharge any and all claims for damages for death, personal injury or property damage that may have, or that may subsequently accrue to me as a result of my participation in recreational or other activities offered, afforded, sponsored by, or located at, the Company or the Properties. I understand that during my participation in any or all recreational or other activities at, near or on the Properties, I may encounter unforeseen and unknown hazards, dangers and risks that may result in bodily injury, death, emotional trauma, burns, and/or other hazards.
