1 Higher Spanish The Preterite Tense The Preterite is the past tense used to express an action completed at a definite time in the past. To form the Preterite Tense you follow two simple steps: 1. Remove the infinitive ending (-ar, -er, -ir) 2. 2 Special Spelling Changes: There are certain changes in spelling of verbs which have to be applied in order to maintain sounds. (ca, que, qui, co, cu; ga, gue, gui, go, gu; za, ce, ci, zo, zu) e.g. Buscar Jugar Empezar busqué jugué empecé buscaste jugaste empezaste buscó jugó empezó buscamos jugamos empezamos buscasteis jugasteis empezasteis buscaron jugaron empezaron Radical Verbs: In the Preterite Tense it is only IR Radical Verbs which change their spelling. The change, also, only occurs in parts 3 and 6. 5 Revision of the Preterite Tense 1. Last year I studied hard in order to pass my exams. 2. Last weekend I went out with my friends. 3. Two years ago I went to the South of Spain for two weeks. 4. Last week my friends and I visited the local art museum. 5. My family traveled to Egypt by boat last year. 6. I wrote to my Spanish pen friend a week ago. 7. Yesterday they saw an old lady who fell in the street. 8. On Saturday you all went to the cinema to see a film premiere. 9. Last night I watched an interesting programme about Spain. 10. At the weekend I did all my homework.
