FROM THE PRINCIPAL S DESK.. Dear Hoffman Family, Behind the scenes of all the terrific things going on for students and their families at Hoffman School are several individuals whose daily efforts throughout the year often go unrecognized. These individuals are Danilo Barrera, Aurora LoBont and Dorina Schiopu. THANK YOU! Our custodians arrive very early in the morning and leave very late in the evening to confirm that the building is clean and ready for use. They clean every part of the building, and make sure that all supplies are in their proper place. Danilo, Aurora and Dorina are always on call. Whether it s snow removal, a burned out light bulb, a broken piece of furniture, equipment not working properly, or adjusting the heat when it s cold, our custodians are there to give assistance. Our custodians are more than hard workers. They are caring and friendly people who are ready to help whenever a needful situation arises. Our custodians duties include opening and closing our building, maintaining a clean environment, making our building secure and safe, and keeping track of needed supplies. But Danilo, Aurora and Dorina do more than that. They take pride in our school, staff, and students. We all value the work that each of them does for our school community. Thank you Danilo, Aurora and Dorina! Sincerely, Mark Walther, Principal Love is in the air...a Valentine s Day reminder... Our wonderful room mothers will be coordinating Valentines Day celebrations in your child s classroom on Friday, February 13 from 1:45 2:25pm. PLEASE DO NOT ATTACH ANY CANDY OR GUM OF ANY KIND TO ANY VALENTINES DAY CARDS. Thank you in advance for helping us to follow our District s Wellness policy guidelines. Please contact Mr. Walther if you should have any questions. Thanks again!

OUTDOOR RECESS PROCEDURES..... The benefits of an outdoor recess are many and Hoffman makes every effort to see that all of our students go outdoors every day. Children are able to exercise, socialize and experience a variety of activities with friends and this all helps to enhance their learning experience. Starting the afternoon after a time of fresh air definitely improves learning, alertness, and overall productivity. Please make sure your children are dressed appropriately for outdoor play. In cold weather, boots, mittens or gloves, warm jackets, snow pants, hats and scarves are a must. If your child wears boots to school, please remember to send in shoes for them to use during physical education. The wind chill factor must be zero or below or it must be too wet or raining before we cancel outdoor recess. The children are out approximately 20 minutes. We are often presented with requests for children to remain indoors at recess generally as a result of allergies or as part of a recovery from illness. If it is necessary for your child to be indoors at recess a note from the doctor will be required. We appreciate your support and cooperation with our recess procedure. REMINDER Daily Absence Each day your child is absent, call the health office to report the illness. Before school hours, a message may be left on voice mail. If your child is ill with a strep infection or other illness that is contagious, report this at the time of your call. Your child should be free of fever for twenty-four hours before returning to school. Hoffman Health Office Call between 7:45am 8:15am HOFFMAN SCHOOL DAILY SCHEDULE 7:55 am Instruction begins for all students 7:45 am Teachers greet students and walk them to their classrooms. 7:40 am Students should be arriving on school grounds at this time Students are expected to be in their class line ready to be picked up by their teacher promptly each day at 7:45 am. Students arriving after 7:55 am are considered tardy. Thank you so very much for helping your child to start their school day on time!

NEWS FROM THE SCHOOL OFFICE Student Absence It would be appreciated if you would copy the Health Office and the Main Office when you your child s classroom teacher about absences. It is not always possible for a classroom teacher to notify the Health Office, before the start of the school day. Change in Dismissal If there is a change to your child s dismissal (i.e. he/she will not be taking the bus home or they are to be walkers) a written note from the parent must be sent to school. Please include in the note the date, student s name, teacher, and your first and last name. We will not allow your child to change his or her after school departure from school without your written permission. In an emergency situation, you may contact the school and verbally make changes. Contact Information Please remember to update any new home, cell or work numbers with the school office. It is important that we are able to contact you immediately in an emergency. Your assistance is politely requested. When dropping off an item in the school office for a student, please have the student s name(first and last) and teacher s name identified on the item(s). Thank you!

Ho!man Elementary February 6, TH GRADE MUSICAL What is the Musical? PLEASE tell us now! The students have all been busy trying to figure out what the theme of this year s 5th grade musical will be. Well, you have to wait a little bit longer. The announcement will be made soon. Until then, review the following information. This newsletter and the ones to follow will cover important information for parents and students. We have included material from Family Matters, a booklet provided as a parent s guide to the magic of theatre to help you along the way.!! Musicals. Because who doesn t want a world where everyone bursts into song and dance. Keep Calm and Love Musical Theatre "1

Hoffman Elementary February 6, 2015 Introduction It happens in a moment. A flyer is posted announcing the musical and the auditions that will follow for the 5th Grade Musical. Anticipation bubbles as visions of singing, dancing, acting, and standing ovations run rampant in the minds of children near and far! Participating in a musical is one of the most rewarding experiences a young person can have. The director and other adults working on the production care about your child s future and want to invest time and energy into his or her development. Your child is about to take a journey that, with a little help from you, could have a positive, long-lasting impact on her or him and the community in which you live. Why a Musical? Musicals are fun! They also provide young people with many valuable development opportunities. A musical brings together all of the arts in one comprehensive program. Music and dance introduce basic performing arts. The design and creation of sets, costumes and props integrate the visual arts. Rehearsing and performing dialogue develops language skills. Integrating sound and lighting explores the use of technology. As you can see, a musical celebrates many diverse disciplines in one arena. In addition, the process of presenting a musical offers young people the opportunity to develop social skills and learn valuable life lessons. Some examples follow: In a musical, everyone s contribution is important. The child operating the sound system is as A musical celebrates many diverse disciplines in one arena -FAMILY MATTERS, MTI important to the overall success of the production as the child whole plays the lead role. Everyone must work together for the greater good, encouraging collaborate and community. Children learn the importance of listening to each other speak and waiting one s turn. They take positive risks and conquer fears while building selfconfidence. Assessment in a musical is nearly instantaneous in the applause and standing ovations participants receive at the end of the show, meaning they don t have to wait moths for a grade, praise or feedback. But the best part? A musical is a lot of fun for everyone involved, whether your child creates sets, manages the box office, sings in the chorus, or plays a lead. All the world s a stage and all the men and women merely players Shakespeare, As You Like It Keep Calm and Love Musical Theatre 2

January 23, 2015 Dear Hoffman Family, On Saturday, March 21, 2015 Hoffman School will be hosting a special Dodgeball for Diabetes event! Our fifth Dodgeball for Diabetes event is an exciting service opportunity and fund-raising effort for the American Diabetes Association (ADA) that teaches students the benefits of making healthy life choices, including getting daily exercise and eating nutritious foods. Diabetes is a chronic disease that impairs the body s ability to use food properly. Insulin is a hormone produced in the pancreas that is necessary for the body to convert food into energy. In people with diabetes, either the pancreas doesn t make insulin, the body cannot use the insulin properly, or both. Without insulin, glucose (sugar) the body s main energy source builds up in the blood. Nearly one child in every 400 develops diabetes. Only Hoffman School students are invited to participate in this special event to raise funds to help the ADA accomplish the mission to prevent and cure diabetes and improve the lives of all those affected by the disease. The programs and research supported by the ADA help more than 23 million people living with diabetes today. Interested students are asked to organize themselves into a team of 6 members who will play Dodgeball in a tournament format against other students of the same gender and grade level. Please read the attached registration form carefully, and turn in your team s application and registration fee of $60.00 before Friday, March 6, Proceeds will be donated to the American Diabetes Association. Checks for registration may be made out to Hoffman School. We are delighted to provide this unique opportunity for our students! If you should have any questions, please contact me at your convenience. Sincerely, Mark Walther Principal

MEASUREMENTS: Approximately 50 x 22 Similar to a volleyball court. THE GAME The object of the game is to eliminate all opposing players by getting them "OUT". This may be done by: 1. Hitting an opposing player with a LIVE thrown ball thrown below the shoulders. 2. Catching a LIVE ball thrown by your opponent before it touches the ground. Definition: LIVE: A ball that has been thrown and has not touched anything, including the floor/ground, another ball, another player, official or other item outside of the playing field (wall, ceiling, etc) If a player is hit in the head with a LIVE ball, the player will not be eliminated. Players may leave the boundaries through their end-line only to retrieve stray balls. They must also return through their end-line. If a player exits the field anywhere other than their end-line, they are eliminated. If a player dodges a ball to the side or jumps backwards off the court while dodging, they are eliminated. THE OPENING RUSH Game begins by placing the dodgeballs along the center line three (3) on one side of the center hash and three (3) on the other. Players then take a position behind their end line. Following a signal by the official, teams may approach the centerline to retrieve the balls. This signal officially starts the

contest. Teams may only retrieve the three (3) balls to their right of the center hash. Once a ball is retrieved it must be taken behind the attack-line before it can be legally thrown. TIMING AND WINNING A GAME The first team to legally eliminate all opposing players will be declared the winner. A 90 second time limit has been established for each contest. If neither team has been eliminated at the end of the 90 seconds, the team with the greater number of players remaining will be declared the winner. In the event that there is an even number of players on the court, a sudden death overtime period will be played. The team that eliminates an opposing player first will be declared the winner. 5-SECOND VIOLATION In order to reduce stalling, a violation will be called if a team in the lead controls all six (6) balls on their side of the court for more than 5 seconds. This also applies to tied teams. More details can be found in the NADA Rule Book Officials All decisions made by the official are final. NO EXCEPTIONS.

NO EXCEPCIONES.
