1 Home-School Connection Dear Family Member: I m reading Dot and Jabber and the Big Bug Mystery in class this week. In the story, Dot and Jabber see some bugs in the meadow. Then the bugs disappear right in front of their eyes! They search for clues to find out why they can t see the bugs. I predict that that the bugs are right in plain sight, but they are blending into the ground. I wonder if my predictions are right. This Week s Skills Comprehension: make predictions Phonics: two-syllable words Word Workout WORDS TO KNOW before been gone searching invisible clues Writing Time A sentence begins with a capital letter and ends with a mark such as a.,?, or!. We can write each word in a sentence and put the correct mark at the end. SPELLING WORDS looking waiting jumping stopping running planning Drop it! I ll show you all of the words for one minute. Then I ll say each word out loud for you to spell on a piece of paper. Now let s see if we can spell the words without the -ing. 10 Butterflies, Butterflies Summer is the best time of year. I love being outside and seeing all the flowers. Most of all, I love watching the butterflies. 2 The Painted Lady Butterfly I m going to come back to see the Painted Lady, I said. And now I have a clue about where to look first! 15

11 Now, I see why you couldn t find the Painted Lady. It was on your shirt all the time! the helper said. She carefully lifted it off and showed it to Amy and me. 12 Now that it is winter, there are no butterflies outside. I wish I could see butterflies now, I said to my friend Amy. Sara, have you been to the Butterfly House? Amy asked. The Butterfly House was a special room at the zoo. You could see all kinds of butterflies there. I have never gone, I said.
