Psalm 112: 4-5 First Sunday of Lent Lent begins with the historic story of Genesis, which recounts the origins of humanity and the original fall. This is not a scientific presentation that explains how creation came into being, but rather the reason why. The universe is a gift from God and not a simple coincidence. Human beings were created in the Creator s own image and in his own likeness. The human being was fashioned of dust from the soil, but the breath of the divine life that entered his nostrils, made him a living being and a partner of the Creator. In the ancient Orient the snake symbolizes the hostile forces. The Bible sees in it the evil one and the one that brings division. The serpent was able to awaken in Adam and Eve the desire to be like God, knowing good and evil. After eating the forbidden fruit, Adam and Eve realized that they were naked. Theirs was not a reaction of sexual shame, but of the feeling of decay because of sin. The story of the original fall is not an incident of the past, but a reflection of the human condition that Christ came to restore. Primer Domingo de Cuaresma La Cuaresma comienza con el recuento histórico de Génesis, el cual nos indica el origen de la humanidad. Esto no es una presentación histórica que nos explica la creación de la humanidad, si no la razón de la creación. El universo es un regalo de Dios. La humanidad fue creado en la imagen del Creador. La humanidad fue creado con el polvo de la tierra, pero el Creador soplo en la nariz para hacerlo un ser viviente. En la Biblia vemos a la serpiente como una fuerza de maldad. La serpiente convenció a Adán y Eva que ellos podían tener el poder de Dios. Después de comer la fruta prohibida Adán y Eva realizaron que estaban desnudos. Esta realización tuvo lugar por medio del pecado. La historia del pecado original no es un acontecimiento del pasado, pero una reflexión de la condición humana que Cristo vino para restituir. Les humains ont été créés à l image et à la resemblance du Dieu créateur. L être humain vient de la poussière du sol, mais le souffle divin l anime et fait de lui un partenaire du Créateur. Dans l Orient ancien le serpent symbolize souvent les forces hostiles. La Bible voit en lui le Mauvais ou mieux, celui qui apporte la division. Le serpent réussit à éveiller chez Adam et Eve le désir d être les égaux de Dieu en décidant de ce qui est bien et de ce qui est mal. Après avoir mange du fruit interdit, Adam et Eve se rendent compte qu ils étaient nus. Ce n est pas une réaction liée à la pudeur ou à la honte sexuelle, mais la découverte d une déchéance en raison du péché. Le récit dela chute originelle n est pas un accident du passé, mais le miroir de la condition humaine que le Christ viendra restaurer. 3 MAKING ALL THINGS NEW The name of the Archdiocesan campaign to realign parishes is not all that descriptive of the goals of the campaign, which are to close, consolidate or bring about new cooperative ties among parishes. St. Gregory s Church is one of six Upper West Side parishes formed into a so-called cluster as part of this campaign. A committee of our parishioners has been taking part in meetings that are part of the campaign. Thus far, the emphasis among the West Side parishes is on the third goal cooperation. Discussions are taking place as to how the parishes can share more information and planning ideas so that they will form a closer community of faith. This bulletin will keep St. Gregory s parishioners informed of all developments such as the recent creation of a 40- person Archdiocesan Advisory Group, one of whose members is Father Donald Baker, formerly of our parish. The group consists of clergy, lay and religious representatives and will make its final recommendations to the Cardinal in June. Your weekly bulletin will keep you informed of all developments in this process CARDINAL S APPEAL BEGINS Parishioners on the envelope system should have received by now a request by Cardinal Dolan to join in the Annual Stewardship Appeal to raise monies to support a variety of Archdiocesan charitable and educational activities. These range from providing pensions to retired priests and sisters, financial aid for Archdiocesan schools and religious education programs, and support for various Catholic charitable offices. For persons not on the envelope system, pledge/ donation envelopes will be available shortly at the back of the church..we are proud to say that St. Gregory s has met its parish goal for the past few years. The need continues. Let s meet it again! NEWS BRIEFS On Tuesday, March 11th, at 6:30 P. M. there will be a meeting of our St. Vincent de Paul Society in the rectory. All are welcome.....on March there will be a rummage sale in the basement for the benefit of the church, sponsored by our Hispanic community. THE TREE OF LIFE Create a loving and lasting memory for a friend or loved one by donating a leaf on our Tree of Life mounted in the vestibule area of our western entrance. HACIENDO TODAS LAS COSAS NUEVAS Este nombre asignado por la Arquidiócesis para reorganizar a las parroquias no es una indicación del objeto final de la campaña, que es la de cerrar y la consolidación de entre estas parroquias. La iglesia de San Gregorio es una de las seis parroquias del Alto del Oeste de Manhattan que forman parte del grupo llamado clúster para esta campaña. CAMPANA DEL CARDENAL 2014 Parroquianos que reciben los sobres en sus casas ya han recibido una carta del Cardenal Dolan pidiendo su ayuda para la Campaña Anual para soportar las varias organizaciones de la Arquidiócesis. Estos incluyen ayuda para las pensiones de los sacerdotes y hermanas retirados, ayuda financiera a las escuelas de la Arquidiócesis, programas $ de educación religiosas y varios organizaciones de caridad.
