Mt 4:23 Twentieth Sunday in Ordinary Time In the Gospel of today,, a Canaanite woman of the pagan territories whose daughter is tormented by a demon makes a request of Jesus to intervene to free her. The audacious and confident insistence of this woman gives Jesus the opportunity to make manifest that the salvation project of God is open to all peoples on earth, to all cultures. Again, today the attitude of God challenges our ideas and habits toward foreigners. The encounter with other peoples on earth will make us discover that we do not have a monopoly of the faith. The foreigner also has some values to give. This discovery constitutes for us an undeniable enrichment and will make us grow. Let us not forget: Every person who grows makes humanity grow. And when the Church demands reform on immigration, it is a good thing that carries evangelical values. Vigesimo Domingo del Tiempo Ordinario En el Evangelio de hoy una mujer cananea le pide a Jesús que tenga compasión de su hija que esta terriblemente atormentada por un demonio. Por medio de la insistencia de esta mujer, Jesús toma esta oportunidad para manifestar que la salvación de Dios esta abierto a todas las personas de la tierra y a todas las culturas. Dios nos hace saber que nosotros no tenemos un monopolio sobre la fe. Las personas extranjeras todos son hijos de Dios también. No debemos olvidar que toda persona que entiende esto es enriquecido. Cuando la iglesia demanda la reforma de inmigración, esto demuestra valores evangélicos. Vingtième dimanche du temps ordinaire Dans l évangile d aujourd hui une Cananéene, des territoires païens, dont la fille est tourmentée par un démon demande à Jésus de la délivrer. L insistance audacieuse et confiante de la Cananéenne, donne à Jésus l occasion de manifester que le projet de salut de Dieu s ouvre à toute les peuples de la terre, à toutes les cultures. Encore aujourd hui, l attitude de Dieu ébranle nos conceptions et nos habitudes par rapport aux étrangers. La rencontre avec d autres peuples de la terre nous fera découvrir que nous n avons pas le monopole de la foi. L étranger a aussi des valeurs à nous transmettre. Cette découverte constitura pour nous un indéniable enrichissement et nous fera grandir. Ne l oublions pas: toute personne qui grandit fait grandir l humanité. Et lorsque dans l Eglise on appuie et on demande la réforme de l immigration, c est une bonne chose, et qui a valeur évangélique. A woman came and called out Have pity on me. Jesus said in reply, O woman, great is your faith! Let it be done for you as you wish. And the women s daughter was healed from that hour.

3 CHANGING OF THE GUARD As we welcome back Monsignor Crimmins from his vacation, we also bid farewell to Father Caswell and thank him for being with again and providing us with a wonderful four-week pastoral ministry. FOOD PANTRY ALERT At all Masses on the weekend of August 23-24, we are asking parishioners to bring food for our food pantry. There will be boxes in the back of the church for the food. The food we need is canned vegetables, soups, beans, pasta, one-pound bags of rice, tuna fish, canned fruits and tomato sauce. If you would prefer to donate money to our food pantry, please use the pink envelopes you will find in the back of the church. If donating with a check, please make it payable to the St. Vincent de Paul Society. Thank you, as always, for your generosity for our food pantry patrons. DRAMA ABOUT ST. THERESE St. Therese is a play about the saint known as the Little Flower and will be performed through August 24th at Our Lady of Good Counsel parish hall in Manhattan at 230 East 90th Street. St. Therese of Lisieux, a late19thcentury Carmelite nun, was only 24 when she died of tuberculosis in Her writings offer a model of sanctity and are regarded as a spiritual masterwork. She was canonized by Pope Pius XI in The drama was written, composed and directed by Michael Pascal and has been presented internationally. This production focuses on discovering inner peace, joy and faith as well as vocation. It stars actress Fanny Veliz. A relic of St. Therese will be present at each performance. AUGUST PARISH EVENTS ( i ) Our Haitian parishioners are sponsoring a threeday bus pilgrimage to the holy sites of Ste. Anne de Beaupre and Cap de la Madeleine in Canada, taking place from Thursday, Aug. 14 to Sunday, Aug.17. For more information or to sign up, phone Adeline ( ) or Flor ( ). (ii) Our Cursillo de Cristiandad will hold a Utrella de Campo on Sunday, Aug. 17, at the Don Bosco Seminary in Haverstraw, N.Y. The transportation cost is $20 per person. (iii) On Friday, Aug. 22, starting at 6:00 p.m., St.Gregory s will observe Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament and a mass for our dearly departed, the souls in Purgatory, the aged and the terminally ill. A message board will be available on which you may place the names of loved ones. This is a parish-wide event intended for our three communities. OBRA DRAMATICA SANTA THERESE Santa Teresa es una obra de teatro acerca de la vida de Santa Teresa, que será presentada hasta el 24 de Agosto en la parroquia de Our Lady of Good Counsel (Nuestra Señora del Buen Consejo) en Mantattan en el 230 Este de la calle 90. Santa Teresa de Lisieux, del siglo 19 una monja Carmelita, solo tenia 24 años cuando murió de tuberculosis en Todas sus obras de escritura son considerados como obra magistral. Fue canonizada por el Papa Pius XI en La obra de teatro fue escrito y dirigido por Michael Pascal y fue presentado internacionalmente. Una reliquia de Santa Teresa estará presente durante todas las presentaciones. Se tomara una donación voluntaria.
