Exodus 34:30 Second Sunday of Lent On this second Sunday of Lent, we are witnesses, together with the apostles Peter, James and John, to an extraordinary event, a unique experience. Jesus, transfigured, shows himself to the apostles. His face changed in appearance, and his clothing became dazzling white. [Luke 9:29] The two figures of the Old Testament, Moses and Elijah, represent a sign that Jesus will fulfill the promises that God made to his people. Such an experience cannot be forgotten. This vision has marked the apostles it has influenced them and their testimony as well. The significance of this encounter will assume even greater importance after the Resurrection. This event will become one of the foundations of the apostles; hope in a life after death. They have seen a glimpse of Jesus in his glory, even if for only a brief moment. And they have come to understand that they too will share in this privilege: one day their mortal bodies will be as radiant as Jesus was. Segundo Domingo de Cuaresma En este segundo Domingo de Cuaresma, somos testigos juntos con los apóstoles Pedro, Santiago y Juan, de un extraordinario evento y experiencia. Jesús cambio de aspecto. And behold, two men were conversing with him, Moses and Elijah, who appeared in glory and spoke of his exodus that he was going to accomplish in Jerusalem. A cloud came and cast a shadow over them, and they became frightened when they entered the cloud. Then from the cloud came a voice that said, This is my chosen Son; listen to him.

SAVE THE DATE 3/9 -- SVDPS LENTEN RETREAT Our chapter of the St. Vincent de Paul Society announces a Lenten Retreat here on Sat. morning, March 9, from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. led by Fr. Ugo Nacciarone, Spiritual Director of the SVDPS in New York. The event includes mass to be celebrated beginning at 12:00 noon. All parishioners are welcome and encouraged to attend. HOW DO YOU GET TO CARNEGIE HALL? 2/25 Parishioner Julie Jordan sure knows the answer. Dr. Jordan is a member of the piano faculty of The Juilliard School and founder and Artistic Director of the classical music group New York Concerto Sinfonieta. The group, under the direction of Paul Hostetter and featuring Ms. Jordan on the piano, presents a concert, including works by Ponce and Sarasate, tomorrow, Mon. Feb. 25 at 7:30 p.m. at Carnegie Hall s Weill Recital Hall. Tickets cost $25 [ $15 for seniors and students] and are available at the Carnegie Hall box office or at NOTES ON THE TRANSFIGURATION Today s Gospel passage, the Transfiguration of Jesus [Luke 9:28-36], raises many discussion points. Here are some, not always covered in sermons: (1) All three accounts of the Transfiguration [Matthew 17:1-13; Mark 9:1-13 and Luke] say that Jesus took Peter, James and John up onto a mountain. But the Gospel of John, which Catholics believe was written by the disciple John, does not mention this enormous event. How come? (2) When this writer was young, Peter s suggestion to Jesus was translated that the apostles make three tabernacles on the mountain. Now it is translated as tents. This is probably the better translation of Peter s intention, for the Latin word tabernaculum usually means tent, and not some kind of monument. Some scholars have suggested that Peter may have hoped that Moses and Elijah would remain a while on the mountain with Jesus and the apostles thus needing tents for shelter. (3) The appearances with Jesus of Moses and Elijah are frequently interpreted as representing, especially for Jewish believers, the Law [Ten Commandments] and the Prophets, which are now no greater than the teachings of Jesus, the Son of God.
