1 Lesson 64: Modal verbs Lección 64: Verbos modales Reading (Lectura) He can cook almost any dish. (Él puede cocinar casi cualquier platillo.) You must solve your problems. (Debes solucionar tus problemas.) He could be telling the truth. (Él puede estar diciendo la verdad.) You may stay here. (Deberías estar aquí.) Your father might understand your problem. - (Tu papá debería entender tu You should arrive on time. (Deberías llegar a tiempo.) problema.) 1
2 You should be able to succeed. (Deberías ser capaz de tener éxito.) He will never arrive in time if you don t call him. (Nunca llegará a tiempo si no lo llamas.) I thought that it would snow yesterday. (Creí que nevaría ayer.) He must be telling the truth. (Debe estar diciendo la verdad.) 2
3 Grammar focus (Enfoque gramatical) Los Modal Verbs permiten al sujeto expresar su tiempo o modo, tales como: capacidad, posibilidad, permiso, solicitud, obligación, predicción, etc. Los siguientes son algunos de los verbos modales más frecuentemente utilizados en el idioma inglés: can/could (En algunos contextos, "podría" se utiliza como el pasado de "puede) Capacidad: I can swim.(puedo nadar.) She can t understand you.(ella no puede entenderte.) When I was a child, I could see fairies.(cuando era pequeño podía ver hadas.) Posibilidad: The story can be true. (La historia puede ser cierta.) He could be telling the truth. (Él puede estar diciendo la verdad.) Preguntar/Dar permiso: You can open your eyes. (Puedes abrir los ojos.) Pedir: Can you help me? ( Puedes ayudarme?) Could you help me? ( Podrías ayudarte?) *expresión más educada must Obligación: You must come back before 10! (Debes volver antes de las 10!) Must I arrive there early? (Debo llegar a allí pronto?) 3
4 Predicción: He must be so telling the truth. (Debería estar diciendo la verdad.) may/might Preguntar/Dar Permiso: You may stay here. (Debes estar aquí.) May I ask your name? ( Puedo preguntar tu nombre?) * May I~? es más educado que Can I~? Might I ask your name? ( Podría preguntar tu nombre?) * Might I~? es más educado que May I~? Predicción: Aquí, may y might significan lo mismo. He may come to the party. (Él debe venir pronto a la fiesta.) He might come to the party. (El podría venir pronto a la fiesta.) should Opinión personal/consejo/recomendación: You should believe in yourself. (Deberías creer en ti mismo.) He should resign now. (Debería renunciar ahora.) He should see a doctor. (Debería ir al médico.) Espectación: You should be able to succeed. (Deberías ser capaz de lograr éxito.) 4
5 will/would (En algunos contextos would es usado como el tiempo pasado de will ) Complacer: I will come visit you tomorrow. (Iré a visitarte mañana.) I will not (won t) come back. (No volveré.) Predicción: I think it will snow tomorrow. (Creo que nevará mañana.) I thought that it would snow yesterday. (Creí que podría nevar ayer.) Petición cortés: Will you open the door for me, please? (abrirás la puerta por mí, por favor?) Would you help me carry this, please? (Podrías ayudarme a llevar esto, por favor?) * Would you~? es más educado que Will you~? 5
6 Speaking (Conversación) 1) Bill can speak Japanese. (Bill puede hablar Japonés.) 2) We could go to the beach on Sunday. (Podríamos ir a la playa el domingo.) 3) You may go to the concert. (Deberías ir al concierto.) 4) I might get a puppy. (Quizás me compre una mascota.) 5) You should not pass! (No deberías pasar!) 6) You should pay attention to the flight attendant s instructions. (Deberías prestar atención a las instrucciones del personal de vuelo.) 7) They will understand if you explain correctly. (Ellos lo entenderán si se lo explicas correctamente.) 8) Would you come with me to the supermarket? ( Vendrías conmigo al supermercado?) 9) You must not drive over the speed limit. (No puedes conducir por encima del límite de velocidad.) 6

8 Checking Understanding (Revisando la comprensión) Cuéntale al profesor si estas oraciones expresan capacidad, posibilidad, permiso, petición, obligación, predicción o expectativa. 1)I would like to drive you to school.
