1 2017 SPANISH III HONORS SUMMER READING ATTENTION: Due the first day of school, Tuesday August 8, 2017! Dear Spanish III Honors Students, We hope that you are enjoying your break from school and that you have had time to relax and enjoy yourself! We look forward to seeing you in class this Fall and hope that you are excited to continue your study of the Spanish language. For Spanish III Honors, we are asking students to purchase and read Pobre Ana Bailó Tango and complete the assignment below over the summer. The book can be purchased on Amazon for around $7.00. We recommend buying this book new as there are some earlier versions that do not contain a dictionary in the back. The following assignment, which should be printed and completed over the summer, is designed to keep you in contact with Spanish during the break from school. This book is a short book that was written for students learning Spanish. It is written in the past tense, which will be one of the main focuses of Spanish III. The book is thirty-eight pages long and uses vocabulary that the students have learned in Spanish I and II. All of the words used in the book can be found in the dictionary in the back of the newer book. This summer assignment is worth a test grade and should be completed and brought to class on the first day of school, August 8, See you in August! Nos vemos en agosto! Summer Work will be graded based on the following criteria: Answers are in complete sentences (15 points) Answers are written in Spanish (15 points) (zero will be given for use of translator) Answers are accurate and show comprehension (30 points) Answers have page numbers included (5 points) Reflection questions show thought and effort (30 points) Answers are earlier written neatly or typed (5 points) Page 1 of 5
2 Pobre Ana Bailó Tango Spanish III Honors Summer Reading Assignment Before Reading: This book is written in the past tense. Spanish has two past tenses: preterite and imperfect. Most verbs can be put into either tense, depending upon the meaning. In Spanish II you learned the preterite tense. To conjugate regular verbs in the preterite, drop the ending and add one of the following: AR- é aste ó amos asteis aron IR/ER- í iste ió imos isteis ieron Generally speaking, the preterite is used for actions in the past that are seen as completed. Use of the preterite tense implies that the past action had a definite beginning and definite end. Juan habló de la una hasta las dos. Juan spoke from one until two o clock. (clearly stated beginning and end) To conjugate regular verbs in the imperfect, simply drop the ending and add one of the following: AR- aba abas aba ábamos abais aban It is important to realize that the beginning and the end may not always be clearly stated. Juan habló dos horas. Juan spoke for two hours. (implied beginning and end) Juan habló con la estudiante. Juan spoke with the student. (implied beginning and end) IR/ER- ía ías ía íamos íais ían For example, compare the verb hablar conjugated in the preterite and the imperfect. Remember that that there are irregular verbs in both tenses. Preterite Hablé hablaste habló hablamos hablasteis hablaron Imperfect Hablaba Hablabas Hablaba Hablábamos Hablabais Hablaban Generally speaking, the imperfect is used for actions in the past that are not seen as completed. Use of the imperfect tense implies that the past action did not have a definite beginning or a definite end. The imperfect is also used for descriptions, time, and weather. Las chicas hablaban en inglés. The girls used to speak in English. (no definite beginning or end) Ana era alta, rubia, y comica. Ana was tall, blonde, and funny. (Description) You have now learned the basic difference between the preterite and the imperfect: The preterite tells us specifically when an action took place. The imperfect tells us in general when an action took place. Note: Although this difference may appear simple, this is actually a complex topic, and you will learn the details in Spanish III. *As you read Pobre Ana Bailó Tango look for the usage of preterite and imperfect. Also, use of electronic translators such as Google Translate is considered cheating* Questions from Reading As you read the book answer these questions in complete sentences en español. Write down the details of the program, including where it is, when, and the qualifications of entering the program. 2. In this book Ana learns all about Argentina and the Tango. Do some research and find out more about what this dance is. Write down information you find, such as the history, how it is danced, who are some tango artists, etc. 3.
