The words tengo and tiene come from the verb tener. The verb tener means to have. The words vivo, viven, and vives come from the verb vivir. The verb vivir means to live. The words está and están come from the verb estar. The verb estar means to be. There are three kinds of verbs in the Spanish language: -ar verbs -er verbs -ir verbs We know what kind of verb it is, based on the last two letters of the word. Each type of verb has its own set of endings that go with it. Verbs that follow the same patterns, are considered regular. The ones that don t are considered irregular. 4
5 What do the endings even mean? How do we use these things? Each ending represents the person that is doing the action. For example, usually in Spanish, verbs that end in o, let us know that the speaker did the action (hablo, vivo, tengo). When we drop the ending of a verb (the -ar, -er, -ir) and replace it with one of the new endings, we have conjugated that verb. When we leave the verb as it is (with its -ar, -er, -ir ending), we are leaving the verb in the inf initive, and it automatically gets the word to in front of it. For example hablar means to talk, vivir means to live. Let s Break It Down! If talking about use -ar verb endings use -er verb endings use -ir verb endings Yo o o o Tú as es es Él/ella/usted a e e Nosotros/nosotras amos emos imos Ellos/ellas/ustedes an en en Verb in its infinitive form: Hablar means To talk To conjugate the verb we must follow these simple steps: Identify the type of verb: Hablar Remove the ending: Hablar which leaves you with the root of the verb Habl Add the new ending, based on who is doing the action If the person doing the action is Use the ending Which translates to Yo Hablo I talk Tú Hablas You talk/ Do you talk? Él/ella/usted Habla He/she/you (formal) talk Nosotros/nosotras Hablamos We talk Ellos/ellas/ustedes Hablan They/You all talk 5
6 Making connections We know the verb estar is an -ar verb because it ends in -ar. When we conjugate this verb, it looks like this: Yo estoy I am Tú estás You are Do you think estar is a regular verb? Explain your answer. Él/ella/usted está Nosotros/nosotras estamos Ellos/ellas/ustedes están He/she/you (formal) is We are They/you all are Using the notes from the board, how would we conjugate the verbs tener and vivir. Yo Tú Él/ella/usted Nosotros/nosotras Ellos/ellas/ustedes Tener Do you think tener is a regular verb? Explain your answer. Yo Tú Él/ella/usted Nosotros/nosotras Ellos/ellas/ustedes Vivir Do you think vivir is a regular verb? Explain your answer. 6
