Psalm 72:11 Dear parishioners in Jesus Christ, Today we hear the story of the magi, mysterious visitors to the Christ child who came from God. It recognizes the essence of the gospel story that God has made himself present to us in the person of Jesus, God s only Son, God from God, light from light, true God from true God, one in being with the Father. The magi brought gifts for the newborn king: gold, frankincense and myrrh. And also, you homage Him so that you bring gifts too: your time, your attentive presence, your participation, your financial support. In connection with that I want to thank my parishioners for your response to my appeal last year for increased giving. We are getting out of the hole we started to get into and perhaps we ll even regain some of the deficit we accumulated last fiscal year. Your response has been most gratifying and I am most grateful. It recently struck me how the story of the magi has many similarities to our coming to Mass each week. When we come to Mass, we know Christ is with us, but we don t see anything special. We see others like ourselves, we see a priest, we see an altar and statues and candles, we see what appears to be bread and wine, but we believe it is much more. We believe that we have found the Lord and yet we know our search is not over. There are greater things ahead. God with us May our journey this year lead us to know and love the infinite Son of God who came to lead us to eternal life. God bless you and Happy New Year, Rev. Joseph Bui. Volume 54 Stewardship Jesus knew well the value of money and the power of wealth. In the parable of the talent (Matthew 25:14-30), a man gives to three servants (slaves) five, two and one talent each. Jesus is talking about trusting these slaves with real money. For these slaves, each talent was worth fifteen years of wages as a laborer (NRSV, Harper Collins). Today, if one is paid the current minimum wage over the course of fifteen years, the equivalent in today s dollars would be $238,680. We really should read this passage as: The master gave to one servant $1,193,400, to one $477,360, and to one $238,680. Now that is real money. That gets our attention. The two who doubled their money were told Well done, good and trustworthy slave; you have been trustworthy in a few things, I will put you in charge of many things; enter into the joy of your master. Luke 25:23. Individually and corporately we are supposed to risk and invest in the Kingdom of Heaven. Often we act not as the first two servants risking and investing in the kingdom of God but as the third servant, afraid we will lose what God has given us. Eternal Word, only begotten Son of God, teach me true generosity. Teach me to serve you as you deserve. To give without counting the cost, to fight heedless of wounds, to labor without seeking rest, to sacrifice myself without thought of any reward save the knowledge that I have done your will. Amen. Resources & Referrals Child Support Enforcement The Department of Economic Security Child Support Enforcement program is a federal, state and local effort to collect child support from parents who are legally obligated to pay. Services are provided without charge to any parent or person with custody of a child who needs help. These services include: establishment of legal paternity, establishment of child support order with medical support, enforcement of a child support order, enforcement of a court order for spousal maintenance when there is also a child support order, location of parents, and review of child support orders for a possible modification. SLK STUDENTS Bourgade Dear families, As we prepare to end the first semester of the academic year we find ourselves in need of host families for 3 new students from China who hope to join our school community in January. Our partner company, Elite Education Global (EEG), has asked me to reach out to our school families to see if you would be open to hosting one of these young men. Two of these young men will start in January as second semester Freshmen and one will start as a second semester Sophomore. If your family would be interested in hosting a student please let me know via and I will place you in contact with our home stay coordinator. EEG offers a monthly stipend to host families to help defray the cost of hosting an international student. Thank you for your time.

Salmo 72 (71):11 Queridos feligreses en Jesucristo, Hoy escuchamos la historia de los Reyes Magos, misteriosos visitantes al niño Jesús que vino de Dios. Reconoce la esencia de la historia del evangelio que Dios se ha hecho presente para nosotros en la persona de Jesús, el único Hijo de Dios, Dios de Dios, luz de luz, Dios verdadero de Dios verdadero, de la misma naturaleza del Padre. Los Reyes Magos trajeron regalos para el recién nacido rey: oro, incienso y mirra. Y también, que él se postrarán para que traigan regalos demasiado: su tiempo, su presencia atenta, su participación, su apoyo financiero. En relación con eso quiero agradecer a mis feligreses por su respuesta a mi llamamiento al año pasado por el aumento de las donaciones. Estamos consiguiendo salir del agujero que empezamos a entrar y tal vez incluso vamos a recuperar parte del déficit que hemos acumulado último año fiscal. Su respuesta ha sido más gratificante y estoy muy agradecido. Hace poco me llamó la atención cómo la historia de los magos tiene muchas similitudes con nuestra venida a misa cada semana. Cuando venimos a misa, sabemos Cristo está con nosotros, pero nosotros no vemos nada especial. Vemos a otros como a nosotros mismos, vemos a un sacerdote, vemos un altar y las estatuas y las velas, vemos lo que parece ser el pan y el vino, pero creemos que es mucho más. Creemos que hemos encontrado al Señor y, sin embargo sabemos que nuestra búsqueda no ha terminado. Hay grandes cosas por delante. "Dios con nosotros" Que nuestro viaje este año nos lleva a conocer y amar al infinito Hijo de Dios que vino para llevarnos a la vida eterna. Dios los bendiga y Feliz Año Nuevo bendiga, Rev. Joseph Bui. Volume 54 TRADICIONES DE NUESTRA FE El Evangelio de san Juan comienza con una extraña revelación. Nos declara que al principio, Jesús no sólo estaba con Dios, sino que Jesús es Dios (Juan 1:1). Dependiendo de nuestra traducción de las Sagradas Escrituras, Jesús es nombrado ya sea Palabra o Verbo en el primer pasaje de Juan. Según una canción de Ricardo Arjona Jesús es verbo, no sustantivo. Y tiene razón. Hay que recordar que Juan no escribió en español, ni siquiera en inglés. El evangelista escribió en griego y aplicó el concepto filosófico del logos a Jesús. El logos, de la filosofía griega se manifiesta en Jesús de Nazaret. Para los griegos esta noticia era asombrosa, porque logos quiere decir palabra activa, es decir, el verbo que actúa y por el cual todo es creado. Juan declara que Jesús es este Verbo, él es el Dios que lo hizo todo y en el cual todos tenemos vida si actuamos como él. Esta práctica suele ser una estafa. Hemos tenido las mismas personas vienen varias veces al año con nuevas historias. También le dirá, que tienen el permiso del pastor. Este no es el caso. Padre José, Padre Diskin nunca han autorizado esta práctica. Si alguna vez se pide a solicitudes especiales, un anuncio vendrá formar el púlpito después de la misa.
