1 WEEKEND EDITION AÑO XXI NÚMERO 47 Mayo 23 DE 2010 San Antonio gets Intervention from A&E By Cristina Blackwell Arts and Entertainment Network (A&E) and Time Warner Cable partnered to host a town hall meeting -the first of its kind- on Thursday, May 20 at Trinity University. The meeting broke the silence of drug and alcohol addiction here in our city by the Emmy Award-winning series Intervention. Much too often there are a lot of family members that are affected by alcohol and drug abuse in some form or fashion, said Gavino Ramos, vice president of communications of Time Warner Cable. Being able to partner with A&E to bring this event here in San Antonio gives families an opportunity to listen to what s going on and that they re not alone in situations like this. Addiction is a disease that affects more than just the user, said Deborah Knapp, KENS 5 evening anchor and moderator for the meeting. All too often people are unsure of where to turn for information. It s our hope that this evening we can dispel some of the A first-of-its-kind town hall meeting was held on Thursday to tackle the topic of drug and alcohol abuse among San Antonio s youth. Studies by The National Survey on Drug Use & Health show that 25 percent of high school students in San Antonio have admitted to episodic heavy drinking and driving under the influence. In addition, according to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, it is estimated that in any given month, 10 percent of teenagers ages will use illicit drugs. It s important to give exposure to this topic, said Jeff Van Vonderen, one of the featured interventionists on the Arts and Entertainment Network s Emmy-nominated documentary series about intervention. People don t know about the treatment resources that are available to them regarding addiction. With this gathering, people can work together and confront this problem instead of just doing it all on their own. Van Vonderen is a highly sought after speaker and consultant both nationally and internationally. For over 30 years, individuals, families and organizations have benefited from his skills and understanding in the areas of addiction, family systems and recovery. Quite often people try, with the best of intentions, to help themselves or their loved ones through a problem or crisis, only to discover that the help is not helpful, or even harmful, said Van Vonderen. They find themselves supporting or helping to prolong on the outside, the very thing they do not support on the inside. He went on to say that individuals and families become dysfunctional by accident. But they get well on purpose and this is what I m about, helping them get well. According to Van Vonderen, it s not just the individual that has the problem, it s everyone that has contributed to the problem. When I start working with families, one of the first things that has to happen is that family members need to realize that we ve been contributing to this and we need to stop nurturing the entity addiction. The goal of an addiction is to kill the individual and destroy the family. Bexar County Felony Drug Court, Judge Ernie Glenn gave insight as to how widespread the problem is in San Antonio. During the time I ve been a judge, the population has changed. Now we have more in the age range and it seems like there is an increase in usage in younger people. Judge Glenn recalled never hearing of his peers using drugs when he was young. Now we do, he said. Por Kiko Trinidad-Colón Una nueva iniciativa para hacer pasar la ordenanza de no-fumar de San Antonio, enfrentó obstáculos cuando el Comité de Gobierno del Consejo de la ciudad decidió escudriñarla a través de una serie de reuniones, antes de que la propuesta pase a una votación. El tema es polémico, y varios miembros del Consejo han dicho que han visto un sin fin de correos electrónicos y llamadas telefónicas, en contra y a favor de la propuesta. El Comité acordó que una ordenanza renovada que podría prohibir fumar en bares, restaurantes y otros lugares públicos debe ser analizada públicamente antes de que el Consejo vote sobre ella. Rubén Martinez, propietario de Los Magueyes, restaurant mexicano, señaló que su negocio cumple con todos los requisitos que hasta ahora exige la ley. Aquí no se fuma en donde no se puede, y hasta ahora no habido problema, dijo Martinez. Pasando esta orden seria como exigir mucho y la verdad, no tendría caso. La ordenanza actual permite fumar en los restaurantes, siempre y cuando sean áreas separados, cerrado y equipadas con sistemas de ventilación. También está permitido fumar en bares, salones de pool, instalaciones de bingo, salas de juego y clubes de comedia. But as a graduate of the ROTC program at Harlandale High School in 1996, the first thing he did was to enlist in the U.S. Army -- and it s been an adventure. I ve been an Airborne Ranger, jumped out of airplanes and helicopters, traveled to Germany, South America, the Caribbean and the Middle East, he told La Prensa Wednesday, in a phone interview from Balad, Iraq, where he is currently serving. Gutierrez plays a key role in Iraq as a human resources supervisor, he manages seven databases and streamlines all the information to align units to make sure everything and everybody is where they are supposed to be. I m the one that makes sure all the transitions are smooth, he explained. He believes things are going well in Iraq. We came to do what we have to do, and now the Iraqis are in the position to take care of things on their own, he said. The sergeant said his tour in the Middle East has not been bad. Here, it s either very hot or very cold, he explained. The hot season in Iraq starts in April, and temperatures get as high as 120 degrees. Gutierrez reports that living conditions are comfortable and everyone is focused on the mission. We live in small airconditioned trailers in a fenced-in area, he explained. The military has done a lot here, and we even have several rec centers, he said. Although he is on duty most days from 8 a.m. until 8 p.m., the hardest part is finding things to do while off-duty, Gutierrez said. He likes to run and has participates in 5K and 10K runs on base just to keep busy. When asked if there was anything we could send to support the troops in Balad, Gutierrez explained that right now, soldiers have lots of things like toiletrieswhich are sometimes in high demand- and suggested what they could really use in Balad right now is sports equipment of any kind. We have these great ping-pong tables, but the paddles are old and it s hard to find a ping-pong ball. It would be great to have a football to throw around or even a soccer ball, he suggested. After serving 14 years, would he do it again? He certainly would. I was the first in my family to join the military and I think it s a good tradition for our generation, he said. It began with wanting to belong to something greater than myself. There are few things that fall into that category, and being able to serve your country to help preserve freedom and rights is one of those things, he explained. Gutierrez said he never would have been able to accomplish as much without his wife Tracy s support, and without the adaptability of his two young daughters, Destiny Marie, 12, and Alyssa Jade, 6. The way he was raised was a big part of his success, too. I wouldn t be where I am today without the foundation my mother and grandmother laid for me, he added. Why does he receive more in retirement benefits than I receive? Answer: Social Security benefits are based on earnings averaged over most of a worker s lifetime. Your actual earnings are first adjusted or indexed to account for changes in average wages since the year the earnings were received. We calculate your average monthly indexed earnings during the 35 years in which you earned the most. We apply a formula to these earnings and arrive at your basic benefit, or primary insurance amount. However, even if two people have a similar earnings pattern, there are factors that can make one individual s benefit amount differ from someone else s. Here are some of the factors that can make your neighbor s retirement benefits greater than yours are. One reason could be if your neighbor s lifetime earnings are higher than yours. Higher earnings result in higher benefits. Your benefit amount is based on how much you earned during your working career. If there were some years when you did not work or had low earnings, your benefit amount may be lower than if you had worked steadily. Secondly, if you begin getting benefits at age 62, the earliest possible age for receiving Social Security retirement benefits, your benefit will be permanently reduced. You will not receive as much as you would if you had waited until your full retirement age. Thirdly, if your neighbor worked after he began receiving Social security benefits, his benefits may be higher. Each additional year you work adds another year of earnings to your Social Security record. It is possible that this can increase your benefit amount from year to year. Lastly, if your neighbor did not begin receiving benefits until after his full retirement age, his benefit will increase automatically by a certain percentage from the time he reaches full retirement age until he starts receiving benefits or until he reaches age 70. Many people are quick to wanting to create things like fame and fortune. That might be easy for some of them to do if they are naturally gifted and talented, but it often depends on the who you know rather than the what you know. Not to mention, fame and fortune means nothing without your health. When it comes to health and wellness, however, it s not always as easy to create by knowing a good doctor and taking some pills. Although, it seems like biological healthcare is slowly merging with holistic healthcare healing the mind, body and soul as a whole through united approaches of medication, nutrition, counseling and even positive thinking. When we think about biomedical approaches, we are thinking about the body and medical intervention, said Pilar Oats, director of Methodist Healthcare Ministries, in a recent interview with La Prensa. Furthermore, when the depression is addressed, so is the body and spirit and how one interacts with others. T.J. and I found ourselves in an interesting conversation that night about how the power of the mind and the effects of negative and/or positive past experiences and ways of thinking can create illness and wellness equally. To some people, willing away illness through the power of the mind or attracting wellness through focusing on positive, present moments rather than dwelling on the negative past (or possible negative future), might sound like a hairbrain idea. I am no expert, but after knowing T.J. for a few years and learning a lot about her childhood and recent past, it makes me wonder if indeed her physical and emotional challenges are a result of that troubled past. Focusing on my favorite things helps me through the bad days, says T.J. It helps me to keep getting back up keep on truckin and getting her done. Some of T.J. s favorite things include (in no particular order): bologna and cheese sandwiches, her book mark collection, rainy days, coffee and American Spirits in the morning, freedom in a free country and from the pain and anxiety when her mind, body and soul are feeling just right, shoes, hot baths, family and friends (although she feels she doesn t have much of either as she is often misunderstood by both), good neighbors (although she doesn t know if she s a good one. I ll let them decide. ), music and lyrics (particularly by Weezer and her favorite local band, Fin Del Mar), and seeing her family happy in whatever it is they enjoy doing. Despite her battle with MS, and the negative effects that bad memories from her past have infringed on her present state of health, T.J. remains confident that complete healing is indeed attainable through the medical attention she is currently receiving and the holistic approach she intends on continuing and believing in. In my next column, we ll discuss T.J. s childhood and how her late husband was diagnosed with a rare form of brain cancer about 10 months after she was diagnosed with MS in There is a lot to say about perseverance, especially when it comes to T.J. s story. Cadmium in children s jewelry, processed meats and shellfish By Joe Riojas Within the last week, several seemingly unrelated announcements/articles caught my eye. Two were clearly related to the toxic heavy metal, cadmium. The other was not as clearly linked, but the connection is there. In the first, an announcement issued about one week ago, Claire s Boutiques Inc. recalled 19,000 Best Friends Charm Bracelet Sets. This was the latest in a series of children s jewelry recalls related to high cadmium content in merchandise manufactured in China. Claire s Boutiques followed the leads of Wal-Mart, Disney, and others who had unknowingly sold the tainted children s jewelry. For additional information on the recall, contact Claire s at (866) or The United States Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) is also interested in reports of incidents or injuries that are related to this product. They can be contacted by at (800) or gov/cgibin/incident.aspx. In the second, an Associated Press (AP) article, based on testing of merchandise from the shelves of Wal-Mart stores, indicated that Miley Cyrusbrand necklaces and bracelets containing high concentrations of cadmium were being sold by the world s largest retailer. The AP testing and ensuing article caused Wal-Mart to pull the entire line of jewelry from its shelves. In the third, researchers found that eating hot dogs, sausage, and deli meats (including salami and bologna) increases the chance of heart disease and diabetes, while eating unprocessed beef, pork, or lamb does not. The study did not look at high blood pressure or cancer, but those diseases are also linked with high meat consumption. The researchers included bacon in the list of bad meats, suggesting that salt and chemical preservatives may be the causes of these two health problems. While salt and chemical preservatives certainly have adverse effects on our health, they overlooked the impact of the cadmium content of processed meats. In several of my previous La Prensa articles related to cadmium (a known carcinogen) and zinc (a metal vital for good health that competes with cadmium within our bodies), I discussed how cadmium is found in our food supply (Cadmium In More Than Children s Jewelry, January 31, 2010), how much zinc is needed in our diets (Think Zinc, February 21, 2010), the relative concentrations found in several foods as well as levels considered to be toxic to humans (How much is too much?, March 21, 2010), and the link between shellfish and several disabling diseases (Shrimp, Oysters, and Disabilities, April 18, 2010). As in our own bodies, cadmium ingested by cattle, sheep, chickens, and swine accumulates in the liver, kidneys, lungs, pancreas, and bones. Una situación similar ocurrió en Perú ese mismo año. Chávez apoyó abiertamente al candidato izquierdista Ollanta Humala y calificó de ladrón al ex presidente Alan García. Humala, quien llevaba la delantera después de la primera votación, perdió ante García en la segunda ronda. En Honduras, el año pasado, los oponentes del presidente Manuel Zelaya hicieron énfasis en su estrecha relación con Chávez como una de las razones para derrocarlo. Temían que Zelaya reformara la Constitución y se postulara para la reelección, como lo ha hecho Chávez en Venezuela. Los presidentes de Argentina, Nicaragua, Bolivia y Ecuador siguen siendo aliados de Chávez. Pero hay una creciente oposición en América Latina al plan de Chávez de extender su revolución de estilo bolivariano a lo largo de la región. El argumento de los antichavistas es sencillo. Qué país podría querer parecerse a Venezuela, donde un solo hombre -- Chávez -- controla el ejército, la constitución, la Asamblea Nacional, el proceso electoral y los jueces? Si Venezuela en verdad fuera el ejemplo de desarrollo que proclama Chávez, cómo se explican los perennes cortes de electricidad, los muy altos niveles de criminalidad, la inflación rampante y la devaluación del bolívar? Cómo justificar los cierres de medios de comunicación independientes y la persecución abierta de sus opositores políticos? Es cierto que Chávez ha ganado muchas elecciones en su país. Pero gobierna como un líder autoritario y ya ha amenazado con mantenerse en el poder hasta el En este contexto, Venezuela es un claro contraste con Colombia. While the effects of the oil spill may subside, cadmium contained in Gulf Coast shrimp and oysters will remain high due to continual discharge from the Mississippi River. (Cadmium is in phosphate fertilizers used on our farmlands and runoff from those fields that eventually reaches the Gulf of Mexico.) Because shrimp and oysters contain about 1,000 times the cadmium concentration found in beef, pork, or chicken, consider eliminating all shellfish from your diet. Remember, cadmium is not just in children s jewelry; it is in the food we eat, and it accumulates over a lifetime. David Rangel is the portrait of perserverance By Cristina Blackwell cblackwell@laprensasa.com Meet the man who doesn t know the meaning of the word no. There s more than meets the eye when it comes to David Rangel. He insists he s a simple man, and is often quite good at convincing people he is it s the only untrue thing that comes out of his mouth. He doesn t mislead anyone intentionally, though. Because at his core, he believes he is simple. After all, his priorities are clear. David loves his career and most importantly, his family. David Rangel, a Sociology Doctoral student at The University of Wisconsin-Madison, has been selected to receive in the prestigious Ford Foundation Diversity Fellowship 2010 pre-doctoral competition. I m very fortunate to be recognized, he said. I don t consider myself a trail blazer, and I don t think it s because I m the smartest. I definitely think that there are other people that are smarter than me, but I had better opportunities, and I m very aware of that. The program awards about 40 pre-doctoral fellowships, which provide three years of support for individuals engaged in study leading to a Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) or Doctor of Science (Sc.D.) degree. Pre-doctoral fellowships are awarded in a national competition administered by the National Research Council (NRC) of the National Academies on behalf of the Ford Foundation. The awards were made to individuals who have demonstrated superior academic achievement, are committed to a career in teaching and research at the college or university level, show promise of future achievement as scholars and teachers, and are well prepared to use diversity as a resource for enriching the education of all students. David Rangel proved just that. Perhaps it was his research experience at the Hispanic Association of Colleges and Universities (HACU), at The University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA) and now at the University of Wisconsin-Madison (UW). Or his commitment to addressing educational inequality or his five-page resume filled with publications, presentations, awards and references. Maybe it s because he knows exactly who he is. Ever since my undergraduate career and even growing up I was very proud to be Latino, said Rangel. Both my grandparents were from Mexico, so I was always very aware of where my roots were. I think all those things came out in my application and they realized that. But Rangel s application was more than a self-narrative filled with his accomplishments. It s about the people who helped you along the way, he explained. It wasn t just me saying I was the best. I was recognizing where I m at now because of the people that helped me get there. Every step along the way I was cognoscente of my position in society. Oddly enough, the San Antonio native never considered himself an outstanding student. I wasn t in honors classes, he admitted. It took me a while to find my way. Rangel recognizes the people whose shoulders he stood on to get to where he is today. (Courtesy photo) I didn t realize what my passion was. Growing up, Rangel didn t think about what the future could bring or where he wanted to be in life he just wanted to make the right decisions. I don t live in the past or the future. All I knew was that I wanted to be represented in my community. My abuelita s education went up to sixth grade. That made me realize that education is important, but life experiences are more important. There wasn t much discipline in his family; however, he does recall his parents always stressing the importance of education. They showered us with unconditional love and encouraged us to make the right decisions. They showed us right from wrong. Today, in his second year of marriage, Rangel is ready to focus on his wife, his family and his community. If everything goes as planned, he wants to pursue teaching at the university level. Don t let anyone tell you can t do something, he advised. It s always helpful to have people supporting you, but it s not impossible without that. Just know that there are others out there trying to make it, too. What may seem like an impossible dream could actually be a reality --it s about putting effort into it and doing it. Is the government keeping America sick? Forgotten Children: A True Story on How Politicians Endanger Children By Cristina Blackwell cblackwell@laprensasa.com It s one of the most important books on the subject of diabetes to get published in years. Robert Treviño, president of the South Alamo Medical Group, felt compelled to write this book to expose the corruption he witnessed at the state and federal levels of the healthcare industry. Diabetes is a $174 billion industry in the United States, he said. A lot of money is being made on having a population sick with a disease. For years, Treviño battled state agencies and political forces that favored another school-based program called Coordinated Approach to Child Health (CATCH), a program developed and marketed by physicians from the University of Texas Health Science Center-Houston. They were trying to give children a placebo, another program that didn t work, explained Treviño. All this money was being given to implement this curriculum that had no effect to prevent diabetes. He called state senators and representatives. I wanted evidence that these curriculums, the CATCH program, showed results, he said. Treviño is the director of the Social & Health Research Center (SHRC), a non-profit organization committed to diabetes and obesity prevention in communities. It s a program that actually showed to decrease blood sugars, he explained. However, it was always overlooked. For ten years, they would not allow us to implement these curriculums in the state of Texas, he added. From 1997 to 2007, they kept us away from the schools and the children. Éste consta de una red de cadenas moleculares entrecruzadas. A temperatura ambiente tiene la consistencia de un gel espeso, casi sólido. Al calentarla a más de 30ºC se convierte en un líquido que tiene la propiedad de adsorber a los contaminantes disueltos en el agua, es decir, estas partículas se adhieren al polímero, reteniéndolas. La capa del SCR con los contaminantes adheridos se remueve del agua y, al enfriarla nuevamente, las sustancias que se habían adherido se desprenden para ser eliminadas ahora mediante un proceso controlado. La Escuela de las Americas offers afterschool programs, special education classes, and English as a Second Language classes. All of the classes are taught in Spanish and English. From the outside, the school resembles a house. Once inside, the educational vibe in the building is evident. Lira has been with the school for four years and believes the school community is a small family environment. Children get the opportunity to get know all the teachers. Lira and teachers are preparing the students with facing the reality that they will not be returning to La Escuela de las Americas with Social Skills classes that helps them dealing with change. Once the school year ends, Lira will be sticking around to close up the school, making sure records get correctly transferred, and the children get to the proper school. La Escuela had a special place in my heart, along with teachers and parents that have come and gone, said Lira. SAN ANTONIO- When La Escuela de las Americas closes its doors on the last day of school this year, it will be for the last time. I believe that the history of La Escuela is at its end right now. It s been a good 12 years, said Ana Marie Lira, School Director of La Escuela de las Americas. The end of the school year usually brings mixed emotions from excitement, nervousness, and sadness. Those emotions will be magnified this year for the students at La Escuela de las Americas Public Charter School. The school was founded by the Mexican-American Unity Council, a frequent partner for events. Some public schools have the benefit of receiving money from city and property taxes, business but not La Escuela de las Americas. The majority of the students enrolled at La Escuela de las Americas are in the preschool program, and due to low enrollment in the upper level grades, classes had to be combined. I think they deserve another chance to clean up their records. These guys don t wake up and decide to be addicts there s something going on and it s our job to figure it out. Michelli Gomez, District Wellness Coordinator for Alamo Heights ISD works with young people on a daily basis and shed some light on what types of substance abuse issues she saw in adolescence. We have all the usual suspects: marihuana, cocaine, heroin, she explained. However, we see an uprising use on prescription drug abuse, especially a combination of (continued from page 1-A) prescription drugs and alcohol, which is a lethal combination. It s not really about the types of drugs being used. We really try to get beneath those issues and go into the issues that are behind the drug abuse. One of the things we re seeing in school is that there isn t a type of kid that s abusing drugs. Many of our students come from different classes, cultures, many are on the top 10 percent of their class. 23-year-old Ashley s life is finally back on track spending nearly half her life as an addict. The big surprise was the inclusion of defender Ariel Garce, who played his first international match for Argentina earlier this month against Haiti. The list released on Wednesday includes tremendous power up front, led by Messi, Carlos Tevez and Gonzalo Higuain. This was exposed during the playoffs. Especially in the series against the Phoenix Suns. You might be reading this and thinking to yourself, We have Matt Bonner and Roger Mason. Well there is your problem. Bonner and Mason have been no shows when it really matters -- the playoffs. Bonner, for as much as he has great games during the regular season, when it has come to the playoffs, he tends to be a nonfactor. In the playoff series against the Dallas Mavericks and even in this past playoff run against the Mavericks and Suns, Bonner was a no-show. Though I will give him his due. He did have two good games against the Suns in game two and three contributing 14 and 11 points. Still, his stats show a drop off. Take this season for example. Jason Kapono. (Courtesy photo) During the regular season, Bonner shot 44% from the floor and 39% from the three-point line. Come playoff time, his percentages dropped to 43% from inside the arch and 37% from the threepoint line. This resulted in five points per game in the playoffs as opposed to the seven points he averaged in the regular season. His career playoff averages are 36% from the field and 31% from the three-point line. You might think it s not that much of a drop off but this is the playoffs! Every player has to step it up. And with Bonner s reputa- tion as a reliable shooter, the Spurs sure could have used a bit more consistency from him in this season s playoffs. Mason on the other hand, well, all season long he demanded to be traded, wanted more minutes, and just wasn t the Mason Spurs fans saw last season. His shooting touch was, in a word, unreliable. In his first season with the Spurs he shot 42% and this season he dropped to 38%. From the three-point line, last season he shot 42% and this past season he shot 33%. I think any time you get a four-year guy, he s usually a mature guy, Smith said. I think you re going to see more and more players graduating and it s because of the way they re doing things in college. It s not like they don t go to summer school. They all go to summer school because it s year-round at the college level, as well. It says a lot when you have a young man who has finished his college degree and has worked hard not only on the football field but in the classroom. And when you get a player like that, there are many practical advantages. Johnson played at Alabama under Nick Saban, who, when he was coach of the Miami Dolphins, had Falcons offensive coordinator Mike Mularkey on his staff. That means that Johnson, a third-round pick, benefited from a coach who runs his college team more like an NFL one but also that many of the plays are alike. There s a lot of similarity, said Johnson, explaining that many of the plays are the same, though Alabama used different terminology. A lot of similar things we do offensively. Hopefully, that eases the transition a little bit. It has so far. I m not really sure what I ll be able to do, Witherspoon said. I just want to go out there and help the team in any way possible. One of my best traits is fitting in pass coverage and I hope to bring that to this team. I m looking forward to doing anything against those teams like New Orleans. To make an impact as a rookie, players must do what Peters described: You ve really got to commit yourself to [learning the playbook]. You have to take it home and read over it and study it and study it and study it. That s what separates winners from losers in today s NFL. You definitely have to have the physical -- I don t think it s possible without the physical, Peters said. But you can definitely get by, I think, by having a strong mind. You come from a situation where everybody here was The Man at their school. It s still football. At the end of the day, everybody on this field can play. You ve got to keep the attitude that as long as I keep progressing, that s where I ll be. I ve just got to keep working every day and I m sure at the end of the day, I ll be fine. He did. Desperate as a result of their circumstances and emboldened by perhaps the loudest home crowd in the NHL, the Montreal Canadiens were a dramatically different team at the Bell Centre. They played with an edge, and they pounced on rebounds, two aspects of their game that were largely missing in Philadelphia. The Habs tried to rattle Leighton s cage by crowding the blue paint in front of him, by bumping and sideswiping him. Early in the game, Maxim Lapierre, quiet the first two games, practically stood nose-to-nose with the Flyers goalie during a stoppage in play. It s not as if he was recommending a restaurant. They obviously play better in this building, and we ve got to respect that, Leighton said after Montreal fired 38 shots on him in a convincing 5-1 win. We knew that coming in here, and we just didn t do anything about it. The Canadiens broke the spell Leighton had on them when they snapped his shutout streak at 172 minutes, 55 seconds on Michael Cammalleri s 13th goal of the playoffs 7:05 after the opening face-off. They broke Leighton s spell, but they really didn t break him. I felt OK, he said. I m not going to dwell on them scoring that many goals. We know we have to play better defensively and offensively. We didn t think we were going to win this series, 4-0, so we just have to regroup. The next game is big for us. Despite the five goals, Leighton was probably as good as he was in the first two games, when he pitched back-to-back shutouts at the Wachovia Center. But he got little support from some normally reliable defensemen as the Canadiens swarmed pretty much from start to finish. Several times, Leighton held off Montreal s charge and kept the Flyers within striking distance until Brian Gionta s goal early in the third period made it 4-0 and put it out of reach. Leighton couldn t be faulted Konerko... Mention of his full no-trade clause will appear in roughly 3,432 news reports and blog postings between now and the July 31 non-waiver trade deadline. The White Sox, reports say, have not made their veterans available via trade. No surprise there. What incentive would they have to do so, this early in the season? It will be another month before the trade market begins to crystallize. And the White Sox, 8 1/2 games back of Minnesota in the winnable American League Central, could make a run between now and then. Yet, there is no sense in denying the obvious appeal that Konerko would have to other clubs. Contenders always want one more bat. Well, Konerko s lumber has produced seven postseason home runs. Also, chances of them getting players like Korver or Kapono are low (mainly because of financial reasons) but if they intend to make another push for a title, why not find a shooter who might not pull a disappearing act in the playoffs. The Spurs will probably resign Bonner but with the above mentioned free-agents available, and if the team is willing to remain over the salary-cap, the Spurs should at least entertain the thought of finding better and more reliable shooters.

The mural: another labor of love at Haven for Hope By Angela Covo acovo@laprensasa.com SAN ANTONIO - One of the largest murals in San Antonio, a true labor of love that adorns the inner walls of the Prospect Courtyard at Haven for Hope, was dedicated Wednesday afternoon. Bill Greehey, chair and executive director of Haven for Hope, kicked off the ceremony and explained the courtyard was an integral part of Haven for Hope, and could provide a safe space to sleep for up to 400 people, who will also receive three cold meals a day, and access to restrooms and shower facilities. I got involved with Haven for Hope, and it s the most meaningful thing I have ever done, because it saves lives, he said. He described the enormity of the task to design and paint the wall, which took 250 hours to complete by a determined group of 50 St. Mary s students led by St. Mary s University Artist in Residence, Brother Cletus Behlmann. The once bare walls, which stand eight feet high and span 520 feet, almost the length of two football fields, are now colorful and welcoming, hand painted with 58 scenes of nature, San Antonio landmarks and religious symbols. The mural has transformed the courtyard into a happy place, Greehey told the crowd. Rev. He thinks San Antonio can rank as the top city in overall participation in the Census. Melendrez is the Chairman of San Antonio and Bexar County s US Census Complete Count Committee. And the real work for the Committee, to make sure those that are hard to count are counted, starts now. The good news is that 70 percent of the city has been counted through the mail. Carol Schliesinger, Media Specialist for City of San Antonio, explains that the Census count has been going well. San Antonio has come in second in mail-back responses for large cities in the nation, but we still have a lot of work to do, she said. And we can do better, adds Melendrez. Junto con esto, hemos visto el nacimiento de la drogadicción y su secuela, el narcotráfico. Y en 1980 se presentó en escena un personaje horrible, el SIDA, que amenaza acabar con toda la humanidad. A la edad de catorce años, superdotado con esos genes paternos, ya militaba en la selección olímpica de México y había saboreado el triunfo en la copa CONCACAF. A los dieciocho años, ganaba con su equipo el Campeonato de la Liga jugando por las divisiones inferiores de la UNAM, primero en la historia de los Pumas. A los veinte, ya se había coronado como el máximo goleador del campeonato de fútbol mexicano, con 26 anotaciones. Posteriormente repetiría la hazaña cinco veces más en España, una con el Atlético de Madrid y cuatro con el Real Madrid. Entre otras marcas, Hugo Sánchez Márquez se convirtió en el jugador extranjero con más goles anotados en la Liga Española, más goles marcados en una sola temporada (38 tantos), y más goles anotados esa misma temporada que los demás goleadores de todas las ligas europeas, por lo que recibió el premio la Bota de Oro. Considerado uno de los mejores jugadores de su país de todos los tiempos, fue elegido como el mejor futbolista de América del Norte y de América Central del siglo veinte. Hugo Sánchez jugó con la selección nacional mexicana en 75 ocasiones, anotando un total de 46 goles. El gol más importante lo marcó en el Estadio Azteca durante el mundial de fútbol México 1986, con el cual su equipo derrotó a la selección de Bélgica. En 1976, Hugo participó en los Juegos Olímpicos de Montreal, en los que su hermana, que participó como gimnasta, le enseñó la famosa voltereta con la que celebraría todos sus goles. Tales conquistas le han merecido grandes encomios, como el de Horacio Scagliotti de Univisión Online, quien lo califica como un verdadero mito que colmó de prestigio al balompié de la nación azteca.1 Pero sus triunfos también han dado pie a que se le critique con severidad. A esa crítica la condena en verso el renombrado actor y escritor Roberto Gómez Bolaños, Chespirito, en los siguientes términos: Hugo Sánchez, ten cuidado! Oculta, si te es posible, que cometiste el horrible delito de haber triunfado. Por qué glosar tu pecado de forma tan insolente, sabiendo perfectamente que en este país bendito destacar es un delito que no perdona la gente? Por favor, Hugo, desiste de incrementar esa cuenta de goles que representa para muchos algo triste. Y no importa si lo hiciste de chilena, de bolea, media vuelta o lo que sea. No ves que por cada gol un cronista de futbol agoniza de diarrea? Al igual que los críticos de Hugo Sánchez, Saúl, rey de Israel, se niega a reconocer las dotes del joven David. Es más, trata de matarlo por el mero delito de haber triunfado éste sobre el gigante Goliat. Pero Saúl recapacita luego de que David le perdona la vida. Bendito seas, hijo mío! le dice Saúl a David. Si de veras queremos que Dios nos bendiga, más vale que pongamos en práctica esas palabras, bendiciendo al prójimo y deseándole numerosos triunfos en todo.
