2 In the digital age, it is very easy to conduct business using only our computers and our phones. We find each other by searching databases, we contact each other via , and we hold video conferences to meet each other. But what are we missing offline in an online world? I m happy to say that while we are grateful for the tools and efficiencies of the digital age, Otis McAllister believes strongly in physically traveling to meet our business partners whether it be in modern Italy or a remote region of India. We travel in order to audit mills and factories firsthand, to examine warehouses with our own eyes, to see the growing lands, to make connections and to find opportunities. Recently, I returned from a trip to Thailand and India, where we support sustainability initiatives among other things. In Thailand, we own stock in a mill near Bangkok and we re also working in partnership with the head of a mill in Khon Kaen to create sustainable farming practices among the northeastern farmers a project called 1 Rai for 100,000 Baht. The project is designed to help farmers by both increasing their income and lowering their expenses. The majority of farmers in Thailand operate on a net deficit every year, so this program is designed to create a sustainable livelihood. It focuses on teaching farmers how to grow organic crops, produce, fish and livestock in a sustainable ecosystem. I was happy to visit the teaching centers on this trip, and I was blown away by the eagerness of the farmers to talk with us and to tell us the impact the project has had on their lives and their communities. We buy the majority of our Thai jasmine rice from this region, and after meeting the farmers face-toface, we knew we had to become involved. We believe strongly in social responsibility and sustainability and we try to find a way to positively make an impact in every country where we do business. In India, we help sponsor an orphanage, as well as support organic sustainable farming in the Jammu Kashmir region. Like the Thai farmers, by switching to an organic, sustainable program, the farmers are able to get more value for their rice and are able to improve their lives in turn. On this trip, I visited very remote, very poor, and very beautiful regions of Kashmir where they grow organic walnuts, almonds, apples and saffron. I was able to meet personally with the heads of the villages to discuss business opportunities. Without visiting these beautiful and remote regions of the world, I never would have met the farmers and never would have personally known what impact our business has on the lives of villagers in Thailand and India. 5 En la era digital es muy fácil hacer negocios utilizando sólo las nuestras computadoras y nuestros teléfonos. Normalmente nos contactamos por correo electrónico; nos presentamos y conocemos a través de videoconferencias. Pero la pregunta es: En este espacio cibernético, qué es lo que nos estamos perdiendo del mundo real? Al igual que en el caso de los agricultores tailandeses, al cambiar a un programa sostenible de productos orgánicos, los agricultores pueden beneficiarse más del valor de su arroz y mejorar así sus vidas. En este viaje visité regiones remotas muy pobres, así como las hermosas regiones de Kashmir donde se cultivan productos orgánicos: nueces, almendras, manzanas y azafrán. Pude conocer personalmente a los jefes de las aldeas y hablar sobre diferentes oportunidades de negocios. 6 Who is NPH? Nuestros Pequeños Hermanos (NPH) is an organization committed to providing a permanent family/home for orphaned, abandoned and other at-risk children who live in conditions of extreme poverty. NPH has raised over 18,200 children since its birth in How did the organization start? In 1954, a boy was arrested for stealing from the poor box of a small church in Cuernavaca, Morelos, Mexico. The young priest in charge, Father William Wasson of the United States, was unwilling to press charges against this thief. Instead, he asked for custody of the boy. A week later, the judge sent him eight more homeless boys. By year s end, 32 boys were in residence and Nuestros Pequeños Hermanos (NPH), was born. The program has been very successful and now operates in nine countries: Mexico, Honduras, Haiti, Nicaragua, Guatemala, El Salvador, Dominican Republic, Peru and Bolivia. It provides food, clothing, shelter, quality education, health care, provides training to the children in different trades, and spiritual formation with the goal of raising productive members of their respective societies. The children have daily jobs / chores and the older children give a year or more of service as directors, medical assistants, craft apprentices, office staff among other roles. NPH lives by five principles: 1) Love 2) Security 3) Sharing 4) Work 5) Responsibility sardines, representing approximately $11,500. In addition, there are several employees of La Sirena who have grandfathered children in the program. They continuously write to the children and donate funds on a monthly basis for the children s expenses. Blanca Senor, Vice President of La Sirena recently experienced living at NPH Nicaragua with her family. She shares her experience and thoughts: I had the opportunity to take my family on a vacation to Nicaragua during Holy Week, the most important season for La Sirena. We all worked at the La Sirena shows and distributed gifts while aboard the La Sirena Caravan. The dedication of our distributors demonstrates the success of our brand. We are dedicated to offer a quality product and educate our consumer on how to eat right and nourish their life in a holistic way. A great part of our DNA is the social responsibility, especially with children, who are our future. Talking about social responsibility, it was two years ago when we discovered NPH and we decided to support this marvelous organization which is present in almost all of the countries we sell our La Sirena products. We feel very proud to be able to provide nutritious meals to thousands of children in NPH homes of Nicaragua, Dominican Republic, Haiti, Guatemala, El Salvador and Honduras. The kids are immensely grateful for it. Creating a happy and healthy environment for the children while providing stability, support, and a family, La Sirena is dedicated to helping organizations in the respective communities where they are distributed. Nuestros Pequeños Hermanos (NPH) es una organización que ha asumido el compromiso de ofrecer un hogar permanente a los niños huérfanos, abandonados y en riesgo, quienes viven en condiciones de extrema pobreza. NHP ha podido albergar y educar a más de 18,000 niños desde su fundación en Cómo comenzó la organización? En 1954, un niño fue arrestado por hurtar una pequeña caja de limosnas de una pequeña iglesita de Cuernavaca, Morelos, México. El programa ofrece alimento, ropa, refugio, educación de calidad, atención médica, entrenamiento en diferentes oficios y formación espiritual con el objetivo de formar productivos miembros de la sociedad. Los niños tienen tareas diarias; los niños mayores cumplen un año más de servicios como directores, asistentes médicos, aprendices de artesanía, oficinistas, entre otros roles. A NPH lo inspiran cinco principios: 1) Amor 2) Seguridad 3) Generosidad para compartir 4) Trabajo 5) Responsabilidad Creando un ambiente propicio para la felicidad y salud de los niños a la vez que ofreciendo estabilidad, apoyo y calor familiar, La Sirena está abocada a ayudar a las organizaciones que desarrollan sus actividades en las diferentes comunidades donde actúan. Dichas organizaciones actualmente contribuyen en seis de los nueve países donde NPH funciona. Precisamente este año donaron 33,000 raciones de sardinas en lata por un valor aproximado de $11,500. Además, hay varios empleados de La Sirena que han dado amparo a los niños en el programa. Ellos continuamente escriben a los niños y donan fondos mensualmente para cubrir los gastos de los niños. 8 TradeShows Por/By Judit Medel Tradeshows are an integral part of our business for many reasons; they promote brand visibility, bring in business but more importantly they give us the opportunity to establish, build and maintain relationships with existing and potential customers. Trade shows are a platform where we get to showcase our brands and educate the public why our products are second to none. This year alone, we ve had the opportunity to participate in a few shows; Winter Fancy Food Show, Natural Products Expo West and more than a dozen distributor shows in the U.S as well as Canada with more to follow before the end of the year. Shows like the Winter Fancy Food Show and Natural Products Expo West provide us with an opportunity to connect with retailers but more importantly, consumers. It s a place where we promote the goods we have to offer and where consumers get to see, taste, and ask questions which will hopefully lead them to go out and buy a bag of quinoa or farro. Distributor shows like Canadian Health Food Association (CHFA) West in Canada and Unified Grocer s Show in Long Beach are designed to promote selling by encouraging manufacturers to offer deals that buyers would otherwise not get, making for optimal buying and selling conditions. This year, we ve managed to secure a substantial amount of business from the shows we ve participated in and more importantly we shined a spotlight on what Otis McAllister has to offer. Back in March, our Rice Division got a chance to be a part of the largest Natural Products Expo West show to date as it hosted over 60,000 attendees and over 2,000 exhibitors. Just recently, our Rice Division and our Sardine Division came back from what was a very successful Unified Grocer s show where we had not one but two booths; one in the grocery section of the show and the other in the Hispanic section. While it might seem silly to have two booths, it s actually very conducive because we are able to cover multiple markets and it gives us exposure that we would otherwise not get. At this show, we sold a few dozen pallets of sardines and multiple truckloads of rice & grains to customers old and new who decided to take advantage of the deals we were able to offer during the show. 8 Otis McAllister, Inc.

9 Las ferias comerciales son un aspecto integral de nuestras actividades comerciales por diferentes motivos; en primer lugar, promueven la visibilidad de la marca y nos traen más negocios. Pero lo que es más importante aún es que nos brindan la oportunidad de establecer, desarrollar y mantener relaciones con los clientes actuales y potenciales. Las ferias comerciales son una plataforma en la que podemos exhibir nuestras marcas y educar al público del porqué nuestros productos son de primera calidad. Sólo en este año, hemos tenido la oportunidad de participar en un par de shows: el Winter Fancy Food Show y el Natural Products Expo West; así como en más de una docena de shows de distribuidores en los EE.UU. y Canadá, quedando aún más shows en los que podemos participar antes de fin de año. Lugares tales como el Winter Fancy Food Show y en la exposición Natural Products Expo West, nos brindan la oportunidad de conectarnos con los minoristas y, lo que es más importante aún, con los mismos consumidores. Es el escenario donde se promocionan los productos que tenemos que ofrecer y donde los consumidores tienen la oportunidad de ver, saborear y hacer preguntas y, ojalá, de llevarse consigo una bolsa de quinua o farro. Los shows de distribuidores, tales como el Canadian Health Food Association (CHFA) West en Canadá y el Unified Grocer s Show en Long Beach, tienen como propósito promover las ventas alentando a los fabricantes a hacer ofertas que de otra manera los compradores no podrían obtener, siendo así el teatro de operaciones ideal para la compra y venta bajo condiciones óptimas. Este año, hemos podido lograr conseguir una cantidad sustancial de negocios en los shows en que hemos participado y, lo que es más importante, hemos podido poner sobre el tapete lo que Otis McAllister tiene para ofrecer. En el mes de marzo pasado, nuestra División de Arroz tuvo la oportunidad de participar en la feria Natural Products Expo West más grande a la fecha, que contó con la concurrencia de más de 60, 000 asistentes y más de 2,000 expositores. Aunque pudiera parecer innecesario tener dos stands, en realidad es muy positivo porque así podemos atender múltiples mercados y nos da la publicidad que de otra manera no tendríamos. En este show vendimos decenas de palés de sardinas y muchos camiones de arroz y granos a clientes antiguos y nuevos, quienes pudieron aprovechar nuestras ofertas durante el show. 10 I had a few ideas of what to expect at the 2014 Winter Fancy Food Expo: Vendors in booths giving out samples, men in business suits, hungry people clamoring for samples before the football game starts, maybe some guy jumping around in a hot dog costume. What I didn t expect was how much all of those seemingly mundane expectations would impress me. I work in catering and in a restaurant so I was very interested in working the expo to see another side of the food industry. A week before the expo, I downloaded the Winter Fancy Food app on my phone so I could get a better idea of what I was getting in to. The sheer number of different companies represented at the expo blew me away. I didn t even know the Moscone center was that big! I was also getting more and more intrigued as I saw things like Bacon Hot Sauce, BeerCandy, Haribo gummy products (gummy bears are my absolute favorite candy) and Thomas Keller s amazing gluten-free allpurpose flour, Cup 4 Cup, on the list of exhibitors. On the days I worked the expo, I prepared rice and grain recipes to sample for Otis McAllister. I sampled several recipes including rice pudding, mango-coconut rice salad, and southwest brown rice and black bean veggie burgers. This being my first freelance job as a chef, I was eager to try out my recipes and get feedback on them. As people sampled my recipes, I got nods of approval, thumbs-ups, and lots of positive verbal feedback. The fan-favorite seemed to be the veggie burgers; I topped them with smoked mozzarella and barbecue sauce. I even got to feed Joanne Weir who gave her approval of my black rice, roast beet and radicchio salad. It felt good to get a compliment from an acclaimed chef. Every so often I had some downtime to explore so I made the best of my time and did a little circuit around my floor, sampling everything that caught my eye. Coffee was usually my first stop (always need fuel) but then I just went through every aisle until something intrigued me. I tried dairy-free lavender ice cream, candies made from beer, chips made from egg whites, jams and marmalades made from different wines, nonalcoholic champagne, tons of different cheeses, kettle corn, dips and hot sauces (I definitely saw a dancing hot sauce costume), but my favorite of the show was the Single-Malt Scotch Gelato. Mind blown. It was sweet and delicious and tasted just like whiskey! It was good on its own but the vendor paired it with a clementine gelato, which was like having an old-fashioned in ice cream form. If I had to choose my last meal, whiskeyflavored ice cream would be my dessert. Fancy Food blew my mind away. It was nice not having many expectations because it made my experience completely new. I felt really honored to be a part of this expo and look forward to being a part of it again, whether it be work-related or appetite-related. - Breandan Tondu 10 Otis McAllister, Inc.

11 Tenía algunas ideas de lo que se podría esperar del 2014 Winter Fancy Food Expo: vendedores en sus puestos ofreciendo muestras, personas en trajes de negocios, personas con apetito demandando las muestras antes del inicio del partido de fútbol; tal vez algún chico yendo de un lado a otro en su vestimenta especial para vender hot-dogs. Lo que no esperaba era cuánto me iban a impresionar todas esas expectativas aparentemente mundanas. Yo trabajo en el servicio de suministro de comidas y bebidas en un restaurante, por lo que estaba muy interesado en trabajar en la exhibición para conocer los otros aspectos de la industria alimentaria. Una semana antes de la exposición, bajé la aplicación Winter Fancy Food a mi teléfono para tener una mejor idea de lo que estaba pasando. Me impactó el gran número de diferentes empresas representadas en la exposición. Ni siquiera sabía lo grande que era el centro Moscone. Yo también me quedé cada vez más intrigado al ver en la lista de expositores productos tales como salsa picante de tocino, las gomas Gummy Bear, Haribo (las gummy bears son mi golosina favorita absolutamente) y la increíble harina Thomas Keller sin gluten para todo uso, Cup 4 Cup, en la lista de los expositores. En los días en que trabajé en la exposición, preparé recetas de arroz y granos para degustar de Otis McAllister. Probé varias recetas, incluyendo el arroz con leche, ensaladas a base de arroz con mango y coco, y hamburguesas del sudeste a base de arroz integral, frijoles negros y vegetales. Siendo este mi primer trabajo como chef independiente, estaba ansioso por probar mis recetas y recibir comentarios sobre las mismas. Conforme las personas iban probando mis recetas de muestra, obtenía señales de aprobación y de un entusiasmo total y muchos comentarios verbales positivos. La receta favorita de los fanáticos de la comida parecía ser la de las hamburguesas vegetarianas, y yo les echaba encima mozzarella ahumada y salsa de barbacoa. Incluso tuve la oportunidad de dársela a probar a Joanne Weir, quien dio su aprobación a mis recetas de arroz negro, rosbif y ensalada de radicchio (variedad de achicoria roja). Me sentí bien al recibir los elogios de un reconocido chef. De vez en cuando tenía tiempo para explorar los pasillos, así que aproveché al máximo el tiempo e hice un pequeño recorrido por mi piso, probando todo lo que me llamaba la atención. El café era por lo general mi primera opción (siempre... tenía necesidad de renovar mis energías), pero luego me paseaba por todos los pasillos hasta encontrar algo que me intrigara. Probé el helado de lavanda sin lactosa, dulces elaborados con cerveza, chips a base de huevos blancos, compotas y mermeladas hechas a base de diferentes vinos, champagne sin alcohol, toneladas de diferentes quesos, las palomitas de maíz kettle corn, salsas picantes y salsas en general (incluso vi una baile de disfraces con el motivo de la salsa picante), pero mi favorito de todo lo que vi fue el helado la Single- Malt Scotch. Fue todo una delicia. Fue algo riquísimo y sabía a whisky. Era muy bueno así solo, pero lo servían acompañado de un helado de clementina, y era como un helado a la antigua. Si tuviera que elegir mi preferido, sería el helado con sabor a whisky como postre. Fancy Food resultó siendo algo maravilloso. Fue una buena idea no hacerse muchas expectativas, pues eso me hizo vivir una experiencia totalmente nueva. Golden, III, President and Chief Operating Officer of Otis McAllister, Inc. recently returned from his trip to the Far East, where he met with our friends from Park N Shop (A.S. Watson Group) and toured their new Taste Supermarket in Guangzhou, China. The chain is the largest in Hong Kong and South China with 325+ supermarkets and carries United States produced UHT (Ultra High Temperature) milk that Otis has packed under their Ranchers and Select brands for the previous four years. Mr. Golden met with General Manager, Peter Johnston and Quality Assurance Manager, June Xiong to discuss expansion of their product range in the second half of 2014, including chocolate and semi-skimmed milk, as well as new, convenient pint packs. Mr. Golden then met with SIMS Trading in Hong Kong where he discussed their sales & distribution of Ghirardelli chocolates and Fox Brook wines. Before departing the Far East, Mr. Golden met with Doug Xiques, President of DXR International, Sue Fielding, and Glenn Smith, CEO of SIMS Trading and his wife Brenda over lunch on Huoshi Zhou Island an enchanting fishing village restaurant. Mr. Golden especially enjoyed this lunch because he was able to enjoy sailing to the island on Mr. Smith s 45 sloop, Black Jack. For more information about Park N Shop, A.S. Our internship program is designed to be a rich and valuable experience for the intern who is willing to work hard, demonstrate a capacity to apply the learned skills from colleges and universities around the world where our internship talent originates, and most importantly, to play hard! You know what they say about all work and no play San Francisco and California in general are rich territories for the explorer at heart. If one is into rock climbing, hiking, biking, dining, sports, site seeing, you name it then San Francisco and its surrounding communities are sure to satisfy the most adventurous intern, no matter what thrill he or she is seeking. In this issue, I ve selected a few choice pictures that capture the spirit of our interns when they re enjoying a little down time. Some of our interns like to take advantage of what California has to offer by traveling and exploring various wellknown places, such as Yosemite National Park, the Hearst Castle, the Central Valley (where much of our food supply chain originates), and let s not forget San Francisco s very own Golden Gate Bridge, Golden Gate Park, and the many fine restaurants that adorn the streets of San Francisco. But not all of our interns have time after a hard days work to explore all that California has to offer. Such is the case with Luis Mejia who joined our internship program on January 17th. Luis worked so hard and impressed our team so well, he was offered full-time employment beginning April 27th as our newest Customer Service & Logistics Coordinator working in our Export department. Less than a month later, on May 17th, Luis and his lovely wife Esther became proud parents to Luis Mejia, Jr. Although Luis may not have had time to explore California while preparing for young Luis, Jr s arrival, I would have to say that Luis has truly mastered the work-life balancing act. Congratulations to Luis on achieving milestones in both his career and family! En esta edición del boletín, he seleccionado algunas fotos que capturan el espíritu de nuestros practicantes en su tiempo libre. Tal es el caso de Luis Mejia que se integró a nuestro programa de prácticas el 17 de enero pasado como nuestro flamante coordinador de logística y servicio al cliente del departamento de exportación. Menos de un mes más tarde, el 17 de mayo, Luis y su encantadora esposa tuvieron la gran satisfacción de recibir al mundo a su nuevo vástago, Luis, Jr. Desde que Luis llegó a Otis McAllister, se puede decir que Luis ha podido dividir magistralmente su tiempo entre el trabajo y vida familiar. 17 Jeff McClure was born and raised on the sunny coast of California in the city of Santa Cruz. At an early age, his parents instilled within him a sense of duty to give back to his community. For many years he has been an active member of Habit for Humanity and the Santa Cruz Animal shelter, and has been doing work for the Salvation Army and Save Our Shores. A favorite hobby of his is watching or playing sports. He was a Bi-athlete in high school and excelled in football and lacrosse. Through his years of experience in sports he was able to attain a strong work ethic and team building skills and has since then been able to utilize and apply those day to day. He is currently a senior at San Francisco State University majoring in International Business and hopes to continue to grow his skills and knowledge while at Otis all the while continuing to keep up with his social responsibility which he is happy to see is one of the main priorities of Otis McAllister, Inc. Jeff McClure nació y creció en las soleadas costas de California en la ciudad de Santa Cruz. Desde una edad temprana, sus padres le inculcaron un gran sentido del deber para servir a su comunidad. 18 Brendan McIntosh is an Agriculture Business major from Southern California studying at California Polytechnic University (Cal Poly) in beautiful San Luis Obispo. Originally raised in the San Francisco Bay Area, he and his family moved down to Orange County in the city of Laguna Hills. Realizing how little people actually knew about their food, Brendan wanted to learn everything he could about the food supply chain. Searching for a school was a difficult decision. After visiting his mother s alma mater of Cal Poly for the first time just before senior year, Brendan fell in love with the small town of San Luis Obispo and Cal Poly s Learn by Doing philosophy. Brendan learned more about the importance of agriculture in the world as well as in California and saw that he wanted to pursue a career in Agriculture Business. Brendan has just completed his second year of his undergraduate work, however he has gained much knowledge regarding business in agriculture. In the future, Brendan wants to pursue a career in agriculture business and possibly the business side of the video game industry. Brendan hopes to have the opportunity to get hands-on experience while working in the Quality Assurance Department to learn all about Food Safety and develop better project management while applying what he has learned from school. Additionally, he is excited to come back to his Bay Area roots and work in the beautiful city of San Francisco. While not at work, Brendan enjoys watching movies, reading, video games, surfing, and hiking all over California. He is also very active in his fraternity back at school by pursuing leadership roles, such as the current Alumni Chairman as well as hopefully becoming the Treasurer this upcoming year. Brendan McIntosh tiene una especialidad en comercio agrícola que obtuvo en el sur de California, habiendo estudiado en la Universidad Politécnica de California (Cal Poly), en la hermosa ciudad de San Luis Obispo. In our Winter 2013 newsletter, I wrote about the many challenges college students face who are about to graduate after four plus years of intensive study and find themselves on the fast track to employment, and how Otis McAllister s International Business Internship Program can be of service to these students in helping them to match their institutional learning with real hand s-on, practical experience. Specifically, I wrote, With a focus on the person, not the task, Otis McAllister s internship affords candidates with the opportunity to explore real-world problems and issues that just cannot be found in textbooks, while at the same time, providing them an opportunity to demonstrate their ability to apply classroom knowledge and strengthen and build upon a professional work ethic. Our intern from Japan, Kumiko Noda, was so thankful for the opportunities afforded by our program and those whom she worked with that she wrote us a very warm and thankful letter that reads as follows: En nuestra edición del boletín de Invierno 2013 escribí acerca de los diferentes retos que enfrentan los estudiantes universitarios que están por graduarse, luego de más de cuatro años de intensos estudios y de encontrarse rápidamente en el mercado de empleo.
