Immigration Minister Fails to Answer Liberal Questions on Citizenship Funding OTTAWA Immigration Minister Chris Alexander failed to explain why he was unable to deliver on the Conservative Government s 2013 Budget Commitment to adequately fund citizenship application processing when questioned by Liberal Citizenship Critic John McCallum at committee yesterday. Meanwhile, wait times for citizenship have increased from an average 11 months in 2007 to 31 months in The Government has admitted that the whole reason citizenship processing times have exploded under their watch was because they did not adequately fund the department, concluded Mr. McCallum. The failure to deliver on promised funding for citizenship means that more perspective Canadians have been denied the chance to become Canadians. Air search for missing Malaysia Airlines plane finds nothing PERTH, Australia - Planes and ships searching for debris suspected of being from the missing Malaysian jetliner failed to find any Thursday before bad weather cut their hunt short, as Thailand said one of its satellites had spotted hundreds of objects in the area. The Thai satellite spotted the objects floating in the southern Indian Ocean near an area where planes and ships have been hunting unsuccessfully for a week for any sign of debris from Malaysia Airlines Flight 370, which disappeared March 8 with 239 people aboard. The images from the Thai satellite showed 300 objects of various sizes in the ocean, about 2,700 kilometres southwest of Perth, said Anond Snidvongs, director of Thailand s space technology development agency. He said the images, taken Monday by the Thaichote satellite, took two days to process and were relayed to Malaysian authorities on Wednesday. The objects were about 200 kilometres from the area where a French satellite on Sunday spotted 122 objects, and ranged in size from 2 metres to 16 metres long, Anond said. The announcement came after the Australian Maritime Safety Authority said it had to pull back all 11 planes scheduled to take part in the search Thursday because of heavy rain, winds and low clouds. 7 South Korean President Park Geun-hye proposed a broad range of economic aid for impoverished North Korea on Friday if it agrees to give up its nuclear program. It was not immediately clear how the North would respond to the proposal, made in a speech in Dresden, Germany, but it has repeatedly rejected the idea of abandoning its nuclear program, which it says is a necessary deterrent against U.S. hostility. North and South Korea have been technically at war since the end of their civil conflict, as the fighting ended with a mere truce, not a treaty. North Korea threatened nuclear strikes against the South and the United States last year after the United Nations tightened sanctions against it for conducting its third nuclear test. Park said the two Koreas must put confrontation behind them and start the work of preparing for unification, and offered to help develop the North s economy, agriculture and social infrastructure. In order for these efforts for us to become one again to bear results at an early time, North Korea must go on the road to denuclearization, Park said. She also offered to April 2014 South Korea proposes aid for North if it halts nuclear arms program help the North join the international financial system and proposed the establishment of liaison offices on both sides to promote exchanges. An 11-year veteran of the Canadian Women s National Field Hockey Team, Ms. Levy was a silver medallist at the 1991 Pan American Games, and a bronze medallist at the 1987 Pan American Games. She competed for Canada in both the Seoul 1988 and Barcelona 1992 Olympic Games, and went on to be a key member of the mission team during the Nagano 1998 Olympic Winter Games. She has remained engaged in the strengthening of Canada s Olympic Movement through her involvement with the COC s Legal Committee, as the Director of Special Projects for the Toronto 2008 Olympic Bid Corporation, and as a member of the Board of Directors and Chair of Human Resources Committee with the TORONTO 2015 Pan American / Parapan American Games Organizing Committee. Off the field of play, Levy, who is trained as a lawyer, is Senior Vice President, Human Resources at Ply Gem Canada Inc. and has sat on a number of boards including the York University Board of Governors. Throughout her career, she has received numerous awards and accolades for her contributions in and out of the world of sport, including the African Canadian Achievement Award of Excellence in 2008 and the Johnny F. Basset Award for Sporting Excellence and Community Values in She was inducted into the York University Sport Hall of Fame in In the early 1990s, Levy was a teacher with the York Region Board of Education and the York Region Catholic Board while training for the 1992 Olympic Games in Barcelona. The Nanjing 2014 Youth Olympic Games will take place from August 16th to 28th, 2014 in Nanjing, China. The Games, which are the second Youth Olympic Games ever held, will include 28 different sports, and welcome the best young athletes from around the world. Athletes who participate in the Youth Olympic Games must be between years of age as on December 31st of the year the Games are held, with variations within that range depending on their gender and the sport or discipline in which they are competing. Worker dies in Sao Paulo World Cup stadium accident Another man has died while helping to build the Sao Paulo stadium that will host the opening match at this year s World Cup in Brazil, a hospital spokesperson said on Saturday. He is the third construction worker to perish while working on the Arena Corinthians on the outskirts of Sao Paulo and the seventh to die in building Brazil s World Cup arenas. Fabio Hamilton da Cruz fell about 25 feet to his death on Saturday morning, said a spokesperson for the Santa Marcelina hospital where he was taken. He was installing floors on the temporary stands being constructed at the ground that will host the Brazil-Croatia opener on June 12, Corinthians said in a statement. Brazil s Sports Minister confirmed Saturday s death and said he would wait for a full report about the incident. Perú: Minera detiene descarga residuos tóxicos Perú anunció que una mina polimetálica llamada Toromocho, propiedad de la gigante minera Chinalco, detuvo la descarga de residuos líquidos tóxicos a dos lagunas en el centro del país. La mencionada empresa ha detenido la descarga de efluentes provenientes de la unidad minera Toromocho que se estaban vertiendo en las lagunas Huacrococha y Huascacocha. OEFA ordenó el viernes a Chinalco paralizar las actividades de descarga de residuos líquidos contaminantes hacia las mencionadas lagunas para mitigar el impacto ambiental que se está generando por el vertimiento de efluentes ácidos de un depósito de desmonte. La entidad de fiscalización ambiental sostuvo que el mismo viernes por la tarde 17:30 hora local la minera acató la orden. La descarga de residuos de la mina local a tajo abierto y propiedad de Chinalco, una de las mineras estatales más grandes de China, fue constatada durante las acciones de supervisión realizadas entre el 16 y 20 de marzo por OEFA.
