Pérez Romero El Centro de Investigación en Química Sostenible (CIQSO) fue creado por la Universidad de Huelva en enero de 2010, y reconocido poco después por la Junta de Andalucía como Agente del Conocimiento. Tras tres años en los que los tres grupos que lo conforman, el Laboratorio de Catálisis Homogénea, la Unidad de Contaminación Atmosférica y el Laboratorio de Síntesis y Fotoquímica Orgánica desarrollaron sus tareas en el seno de un Centro virtual y exento de sede física, a finales de 2012 tuvo lugar la inauguración de la misma en el Edificio Robert H. Grubbs. Ha sido 2013, pues, el primer año en el que la labor investigadora de estos grupos ha podido visualizarse para la comunidad universitaria onubense dentro de este edificio que conjuga sobriedad con funcionalidad. El comienzo del año, inmediatamente después de la inauguración del Centro, resultó frenético para poder instalar todos los equipos y tener los laboratorios a pleno rendimiento en el menor tiempo posible. Ello fue posible al esfuerzo de todos los miembros del CIQSO, que realizaron las labores de desmontaje, traslado y montaje prácticamente en su totalidad, sin apenas ayuda externa. Tras un breve lapso de tiempo los laboratorios reanudaron su actividad, llevando de nuevo a CIQSO al nivel de producción, tanto cualitativo como cuantitativo, que recoge esta Memoria, y que no necesita más comentarios. No soplan buenos vientos: la disminución delos ya escasos fondos de investigación, particularmente los dedicados a personal en formación, están haciendo mella en España, en la Unviersidad de Huelva y, como no puede ser de otra forma, en CIQSO. El número de investigadores se ha reducido un 20% desde No obstante, nos proponemos como objetivo el mantenimiento, cuando menos, del nivel de productividad demostrado hasta ahora, en aras de demostrar la capacidad del grupo de personas a las que se ha confiado este Centro por parte de la Universidad de Huelva. The Center for Research in Sustainable Chemistry (CIQSO) was created by Universidad de Huelva in January 2010, and recognized shortly after by Junta de Andalucía (Regional Government) as knowledge broker. After three years in which the three research groups (Homogeneous Catalysis Laboratory, Atmospheric Pollution Unit and Laboratory of Organic Synthesis and Photochemistry) accounting for CIQSO have been working together but at separate places, at the end of 2012 the Robert H. Grubbs Building was inaugurated by the Nobel Laureate as their new location. Thus, 2013 has been the first year for CIQSO in terms of a Center with its own location, a building where functionality and sobriety comes together to help researchers to do their best. The beginning of the year was somewhat hectic, since many equipment and laboratory facilities had to be disconected, moved and connected again as soon as possible to avoid gaps in research. All the personnel was quite intense toward that end, that made themselves most of the work, with little help from outside. As a result of that, the normal activity at the laboratories was restored very soon. The scientific production of CIQSO in 2013, compiled in this Report, has been again quite noticeable, both in temrs of quality and quantity, and need no further comment. We are facing a tough time in terms of funding for research: budgets are decreasing year after year, particularly those focused to promoting graduate students to get their Ph D degrees. This trend is affecting Spain, the Universidad de Huelva and, obviously, CIQSO. The number of graduate students and posdocs at CIQSO has decreased 25% from However, we have committed ourselves to maintain the productivity of the last few years to demonstrate the commitment of the people at CIQSO with our society. 6 Grupos de Investigación Research Groups Laboratorio de Catálisis Homogénea Homogeneous Catalysis Laboratory LÍNEAS DE INVESTIGACIÓN Los hidrocarburos (saturados e insaturados) son sustratos procedentes de la industria petroquímica que por su disponibilidad y bajo coste relativo les hacen excelentes candidatos para su uso como materiales de partida en reacciones que permitan su conversión en otras moléculas más complejas con un alto valor añadido. Nuestro grupo de investigación ha centrado sus esfuerzos en los últimos años en el desarrollo de catalizadores basados en metales de transición (principalmente del grupo 11) que induzcan estas transformaciones mediante procesos que transcurran a temperatura ambiente (o moderada), con un alto grado de selectividad atómica (reducción de subproductos no deseados) y que lleven a la obtención de productos de interés para el sector de la química fina o farmacéutica. Funcionalización de enlaces C-H sp3 de hidrocarburos o sp2 de arenos mediante reacciones de inserción de grupos carbeno (desde diazocompuestos), nitreno (desde iminoiodonanos o cloramina-t) u oxo (desde peróxido de hidrógeno). Una de las líneas más recientes aborda la realización de estos procesos en condiciones supercríticas. Reacciones de adición radicalaria/de polimerización por transferencia de átomo (ATRA/ATRP). Este tipo de reacciones hace uso de catalizadores basados en cobre y permite la adición selectiva de sustratos polihalogenados a dobles enlaces (ATRA) o la polimerización controlada de olefinas mediante un proceso radicalario inducido por un complejo metálico (ATRP). Reacciones de acoplamiento de haluros de arilo con aminas o amidas. Esta línea de investigación se centra en el desarrollo de catalizadores de cobre y níquel bien definidos para reacciones de acoplamiento del tipo Goldberg o Ulmann. Reacciones de cicloadición [3+2] de alquinos y azidas. El empleo de catalizadores de cobre ha permitido el desarrollo de procesos de síntesis de triazoles o de oxazoles, según se empleen sulfonil- o acil-acidas, respectivamente. 7 Grupos de Investigación Research Groups RESEARCH PROJECTS Hydrocarbons, either saturated or unsaturated, are readily available from oil refineries at a low price. Because of this, they are potentially good candidates as raw materials for the synthesis of other, more complex, value-added molecules. The overall goal of our group is, following previous work from these laboratories, the development of metal-based catalysts for reactions that lead to such achievement. Moderate reaction conditions and high degree of atomic selectivities with minimization of nondesired byproducts are required features in these synthetic processes. Functionalization of sp3 C-H bonds of hydrocarbons or sp2 C-H bonds of arenes. This goal can be achieved either by carbene insertion (from diazo compounds), nitrene insertions (from iminoiodonanes or chloramine-t) or oxo insertions (from hydrogen peroxide). Recently we have started to expand these systems to the use of supercritical fluids as the reaction medium. Atom transfer radical additions (ATRA) and atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) reactions. Copper-based complexes have already been developed in our laboratory as good catalysts for ATRA reactions. We continue improving the catalytic capabilities of our catalysts and expanding the scope from ATRA to ATRP reactions. Coupling reactions of aryl halides with amines or amides. We are also interested in the development of isolated, well-defined copper complexes as catalysts for this transformation, so-called Goldberg and Ulmann coupling reactions. 8 Grupos de Investigación Research Groups Laboratorio de Síntesis y Fotoquímica Orgánica Organic Synthesis and Photochemistry Laboratory LÍNEAS DE INVESTIGACIÓN El interés de nuestro grupo es el diseño de interruptores moleculares y supramoleculares fluorescentes (o en general fotoactivables), con el objetivo de establecer nuevos sistemas capaces de procesar información. La meta futura, a largo plazo, es el desarrollo de unidades estructurales para computación molecular. A corto plazo, esperamos llegar a entidades moleculares con una aplicación potencial en química analítica, en contextos bioquímicos o en la emulación de funciones biológicas. Con este fin, se han integrado cromóforos típicamente fluorescentes en arquitecturas moleculares (p. ej., con fotocromos o unidades receptoras adecuadas), en sistemas supramoleculares anfitrión huésped con macrociclos o con nano-objetos (p. ej., quantum dots). Estas arquitecturas pueden ser abordadas por inputs químicos o fotónicos y por medio del control de los procesos que pueden darse en estado excitado, como son la transferencia electrónica o la transferencia energética, consiguiendo así una modulación de la señal fluorescente. Otra línea de investigación es la aplicación de productos naturales en el contexto de química supramolecular y la medida de su actividad antioxidante. RESEARCH PROJECTS Our group is interested in the design of fluorescent (or generally photoactivable) molecular and supramolecular switches with the objective to establish novel systems capable of information processing. The long-term future goal is the development of building blocks for molecular computing. In a shorter timeframe we hope to arrive at molecular entities with application potential in analytical chemistry, in biomedical contexts or to mimic biological functions. Towards this end typically fluorescent chromophores are integrated in molecular conjugates (e.g., with photochromes or adequate receptor units), in supramolecular host-guest assemblies with synthetic macrocycles or with nano-objects (e.g., quantum dots). These architectures can be addressed by chemical or photonic inputs and through the control of excited state processes such as electron transfer or energy transfer a modulated fluorescence reporter signal is obtained. Another line of research concerns the use of natural products in the context of supramolecular chemistry and the measurement of their antioxidant activity. Informe anual / Annual report

9 Grupos de Investigación Research Groups Laboratorio de Contaminación Atmosférica Atmospheric Pollution Laboratory LÍNEAS DE INVESTIGACIÓN La principal línea de investigación del grupo de Contaminación Atmosférica está relacionada con la obtención de nuevas técnicas y protocolos para cuantificar y evaluar las fuentes (naturales y antropogénica) de contaminación del aire empleando herramientas geoquímicas y modelización. Los resultados de la monitorización del aire analizando más de 65 componentes inorgánicos y elementos, además de especies de elementos y relaciones isotópicas permiten elaborar mapas geoquímicos a nivel regional. De esta forma se evalúan: 1) Cumplimientos de los límites de las Directivas europeas. 2) El fondo y máximos para cada componente inorgánico y elementos y evaluar el origen de los aerosoles derivados de emisiones industriales, tráfico eintrusiones saharianas. Finalmente, en colaboración con ARL-NOAA se pronostica la calidad del aire empleando el modelo HYSPLIT con alta resolución espacial y temporal. RESEARCH PROJECTS The main research project in our group es focussed toward the development of new tecniques and protocols to quantify the sources (natural as well as anthropogenic in origin) of air pollution. To accomplish such goals, we use several geochemical as well as computeraid modelization tools. Our lab routinely monitor ca. 65 elements or inorganic compounds, along with several species and isotopic ratios that provide the relevant information required to generate geochemical maps of the Andalusian region. The control of the industrial emissions, trafic as well as dust from North Africa is also controlled. Finally, in collaboration with the ARL-NOAA, our lab provides the forecast of air quality usin the HYSPLIT model at a very high spatial as well as temporal resolution. Informe anual / Annual report
