1 BUSINESS MANAGEMENT FOR EMERGING MARKETS Degree Type: Master s Degree (Accredited) Academic Area: Management Starting Date: October Duration: 60 ECTS credits Campus Location: La Moraleja, Madrid (Spain) / São Paulo (Brazil), New Delhi (India) Language: English Study Option: Campus-based Since the beginning of the 21st century, emerging markets have been consolidated as the areas with the most dynamic growth in the world. As such, the average rate of increase in GDP in the last two decades of the last century was 2.9% in developed economies and 3.6% in emerging markets, while for the period , the average rates were 1.9% and 6.2% respectively. This difference, according to IMF calculations, will be maintained for the period 2011 to 2015 (6.6% in emerging markets and 2.5% in developed markets). Over the last decade, emerging markets have grown at a pace far in excess of that of developed markets and, as a result, have significantly increased their participation in the global GDP, as well as in trade, direct investment and in the international financial markets. Recent opinions estimate that this trend will continue for some years to come. Furthermore, the economic crisis has resulted in significant changes in world economic governance, in particular, the replacement of G7 with G20 as the international leadership forum regarding the economy that has consolidated new players, mainly coming from emerging markets, as being of crucial importance in the global panorama. As a whole, these developments are interpreted as being proof of an evolution towards an increasingly multi-polar international economic order, in which emerging markets already play a pivotal role, which will surely increase in the future. The economies of emerging markets stand out for having simultaneously fulfilled various characteristics. Firstly, we are dealing with developing countries, with huge economies, a growing weight in the world economy and a high level of potential. Secondly, all these are countries of systematic importance for the global economy insofar as what happens economically on a national scale has deep repercussions not only on the regional environment, but also worldwide. Lastly, all these countries have the willingness and capacity to exercise an important influence on the governance of the global economy. The simultaneous fulfillment of these characteristics gives these countries a form of coherence; and the added presence of a series of joint interests in different areas explains how these countries have grouped together with their political leaders meeting regularly with the aim of defining common positioning and alternatives. Other emerging markets are not very far away from fulfilling the three specific characteristics set out above, such as Mexico, Malaysia, South Africa, Indonesia and even Turkey. In fact, if we add Argentina and Saudi Arabia to these countries, we complete the G20 list of emerging markets.

2 The government of the world economy has been reflecting these changes by giving greater weight and representation to emerging markets. This has been true particularly over the last two years when the need to take into account these markets to exit from the international crisis has been the stimulus behind the role of G20, of which the most important emerging markets are members. An increasingly internationalized economy and the new information and knowledge society require professionals with a profile different to that of the industrial economist. Years ago, UNESCO and the OECD set out the importance of the globalized society and higher education as the driving force for the progress of societies. In this new economic society, business expansion is based on the mastery of strategic, financial and market knowledge, as well as the ability to understand interculturality to strengthen the leadership of organizations and the impact these have on the countries in which they operate. The ability to understand, master and manage within this new emerging environment depends on the success of both professionals and businesses. GENERAL INFORMATION Student Profile: This Master s Degree is aimed at students with the following admissions profile: Graduates or equivalent from the academic area of social sciences Engineers from any specialization Architects Duration: The Master s Degree has a duration of 60 ECTS credits and will be offered from October to June excluding the internship period, which will take place from June to September. Schedule: Full-time program. Classes will be on Mondays to Fridays from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. On an exceptional basis, some classes may take place at other times, mainly to participate in visits to companies based in Madrid, São Paulo and New Delhi. 3 CURRICULUM Studies are structured within one academic year, worth 60 ECTS credits distributed over 8 modules with hands-on labs (48 ECTS credits), an internship module (6 ECTS credits) and the Master s Thesis (6 ECTS credits). The first three modules, offered at IEDE Business School (Madrid, Spain) will develop the fundamental MBA tools applicable to all settings, without distinguishing the levels of economic development within each. The following five modules specialize in MBA tools that may be applied to emerging markets. These will take place at two different universities, geographically located in emerging markets: one on the American continent (in São Paulo, Brazil) and the other in Asia (New Delhi, India), both part of the Laureate International Universities network, to which both Universidad Europea de Madrid and its business school, IEDE Business School, belong. Internship Between June and September, upon finishing the content-based part of the program an internship will take place at companies collaborating with IEDE Business School. At the end of this period, the student will prepare a report summarizing their activity. The companies will select the students once assessment has been carried out of their résumés as well as the competences they have developed throughout the academic year. MODULE X. Master s Thesis Preparation and defense of an idea or viable business plan before a panel, which the student has been working on throughout the Master s program. The presentation will include creation, set up and operational and economic analysis of all the decision-making areas involved in its launch.

4 FACULTY The success of any program depends greatly on the selection of the faculty. At IEDE Business School, Business School São Paulo and Pearl Academy, the students have the benefit of an international faculty with more than one hundred professors who encompass all the areas taught in the MBA.
