2 Before During After The Reading Comprehension Process Applied To TAKS The Reading Comprehension Process During Guided Reading I. Activate Prior Knowledge Look at important words in the title, look at pictures, graphs or diagrams. Skim the passage, looking at any characters, dialogue, or subtitles. Think about what you know about this topic. Jot or draw your thoughts Look at the first paragraph, based on everything you have checked out, predict what this will be about. (Be prepared as you read, you may confirm your prediction, but you may have to change it based on what you learn.) Skim the passage. II. Set a Purpose Complete this sentence, using what you already know, I am reading this selection to find out... (sometimes the titles and subtitles can help you complete this sentence). III. Read Keep your prediction in mind you may have to change it. Read a chunk of text (maybe a few paragraphs or a page), picturing things in your mind or talking to yourself about what you re finding out. Stop and ask yourself What was this part about? IV. React / Reflect Jot down a word, the main idea, or a quick picture to help you remember that part later. If you need more ideas, you may complete one or more of the following: This made me think of... I think it s important to remember... I liked when... I think that... If you don t know what it was about, read it again. V. Summarize For a story write important events from the beginning, middle, and end (short paragraph). For an informational selection write the topic and three to five things you think the author wants you to remember. Using The Process During TAKS Preview and Predict Look at the title, pictures, and key words. Read the first paragraph. Predict what this passage will be about. Set Purpose Think about what you will learn or find out as you read. Ask a question that will tell your purpose or complete the sentence I am reading this to find out... During Reading Read the passage in chunks. Stop and think about what you are reading and ask yourself What was this part about? (If you don t know, read it again.) Jot down a word or a quick picture to help you remember that part later. Retelling Write 3 important facts or events that the author wants you to remember.

III. Read Picture things in your mind. Predict what will happen in the next part. Stop once or twice and ask yourself, Do I know what s happening or what the author wants me to learn? or, Does this make sense? If your answer is No, then reread. IV. React/Reflect Write one word that tells how you feel about the selection and/or the characters and explain. If you need more ideas, you may complete one or more of the following: This reminded me of... I was surprised that... I think it s important to remember... I liked when... I think that... V. Summarize For a story: Write what happened, answer your purpose question(s), or complete who-wanted-but-so. For an informational selection (expository): State the topic and write three important things that the author wanted you to learn. The Reading Comprehension Process A Guide for Kids I.
