What are porcelanas? 2. How long ago did the Lladró brothers start the company? 3. Where can one buy Lladró figurines in the United States? 4. What is the formula for success that the Lladró brothers followed? Explain why the text refers to tiempos difíciles. 4. Translate the first sentence of the text. II. Vocabulary A. Pedir and Preguntar Pedir means to ask for or order and preguntar means to ask in the sense of requesting information. Since pedir means to ask for, the preposition is not expressed in Spanish. Arnaldo pide permiso para salir. Las niñas preguntan, qué hora es? Arnaldo asks for permission to leave. The girls ask, what time is it? Preguntar por means to ask about someone or something. Mis amigos preguntan por mi mamá. My friends ask about my mother. Hacer una pregunta means to ask a question. Por qué siempre me haces preguntas? Why are you always asking me questions? B. Spanish Verbs with Embedded Prepositions Since the following Spanish verbs contain an embedded preposition, the prepositions at, for, to, of, and in are not expressed in Spanish. aprovechar (to take advantage of) buscar (to look for) conseguir (to succeed in) esperar (to wait for) mirar (to look at) pagar (to pay for) escuchar (to listen to) Jorge mira el mapa para hallar la oficina. Qué buscas en mi cuarto? Escuchamos música clásica durante la cena. Jorge is looking at the map to find the office. What are you looking for in my room? We listen to classical music during dinner.

In general, the imperfect is used to describe things in the past and the preterit refers to completed past actions. A. Imperfect Tense 1. The imperfect tense of -ar verbs is formed by adding -aba, -abas, -aba, -ábamos, -abais, and -aban to the stem of the verb. For the imperfect tense of -er and -ir verbs, add -ía, -ías, -ía, -íamos, -íais, -ían to the stem of the verb. Verbs that are radical changing in the present show no radical change in the imperfect. encontrar volver escribir encontraba volvía escribía encontrabas volvías escribías encontraba volvía escribía encontrábamos volvíamos escribíamos encontrabais volvíais escribíais encontraban volvían escribían

The imperfect tense may be translated in several ways. Él estudiaba. He was studying, he used to study, he would study. 4. The imperfect tense is used to express the time of day, age, mental and emotional actions, and description in the past. Eran las dos y media de la tarde. Llovía y hacía frío. Yo no sabía la respuesta. No queríamos ir al centro. Cuando tenía trece años, iba al cine solo. It was 2:30 in the afternoon. It was raining and cold. I did not know the answer. We did not want to go downtown. When I was 13, I would go to the movies alone. B. Preterit Tense 1. Regular -ar verbs form the preterit tense by adding the following endings to the stem of the verb: -é, -aste, -ó, -amos, -asteis, -aron. Regular -er and -ir verbs add the following endings: -í, -iste, -ió, -imos, -isteis, -ieron. -Ar and -er verbs that are radical changing in the present show no radical change in the preterit. encontrar volver escribir encontré volví escribí encontraste volviste escribiste encontró volvió escribió encontramos volvimos escribimos encontrasteis volvisteis escribisteis encontraron volvieron escribieron
