3 COMPARATIVES AND SUPERLATIVES You use comparatives and superlatives to compare two or more nouns, and the formation depends on the syllables in the adjective. Let s study them! ADJECTIVES WITH ONE SYLLABLE Here, to form the comparative you must add ER to the adjective, and it s followed by THAN. To form the superlative you must add EST to the adjective. So easy! SWEET SWEETER THE SWEETEST HOT HOTER THE HOTEST LONG LONGER THE LONGEST BIG BIGGER THE BIGGEST TALL TALLER THE TALLEST Here re two examples: She is taller than Jamie. Clara is the tallest.

4 ADJECTIVES WITH TWO SYLLABLES ENDING IN Y Here, to form the comparative you must remove the Y and add EIR to the adjective, and it s followed by THAN. To form the superlative you must remove the Y and add EIST to the adjective. LUCKY LUCKIER THE LUCKIEST ANGRY ANGRIER THE ANGRIEST BUSY BUSIER THE BUSIEST Here re two examples: Carmen is luckier than Jamie, she always wins. Julio is the busiest man in the world. ADJECTIVES WITH TWO OR MORE SYLLABLES When the adjective has two syllables or more (not ended in Y) you must use MORE to comparatives and THE MOST to superlatives. GENEROUS MORE GENEROUS THE MOST GENEROUS INTELLIGENT MORE INTELLIGENT THE MOST INTELLIGENT IMPORTANT MORE IMPORTANT THE MOST IMPORTANT Here re two examples: My brother is more intelligent than yours. You are the most generous person I know.
