1 Comparing Places: GUIAS Y APUNTES EXAMEN FINAL INGLES 2 MEDIO 2011 COMPARING PEOPLE AND PLACES & SUPERLATIVES (HANDOUT N 2) Usando las reglas comparativas vistas anteriormente, en esta parte de la unidad realizaremos comparaciones de lugares. Aquí encontramos algunos adjetivos para ello Quiet: Tranquilo Big: Grande Cheap: Barato Entertaining: Entretenido Crowded: Lleno Safe: Seguro Noisy: Ruidoso Small: Pequeño Expensive: Costoso Boring: Aburrido Empty: Vacio Dangerous: Peligroso Formula: Nombre de lugar + verbo TO Be + Adjetivo comparativo + than + Nombre de otro Lugar Examples: Argentina is bigger than Chile (Argentina es más grande que Chile) A building is taller than a house (Un edificio es más alto que una casa) ACTIVITY: Give your opinion about the following places (entertaining) In my opinion the cinema is more entertaining than the theatre Theatre I think.. 2 COMPARING PEOPLE Para comparar o describir personas tenemos dos aspectos: el de la personalidad y el aspecto físico. A continuación encontrarás adjetivos para describir ambos. Personalities Talkative: Conversador Shy: Vergonzoso Badtempered: Mal humorado Ambitious: Ambicioso Careless: Descuidado Cheerful: Alegre Friendly: Amigable Hard-working: Trabajólico Generous: Generoso ACTIVITY 1: Describe these people. 3 ACTIVITY 2: Compare these people. (tall) Ronaldo is taller than Messi (Ronaldo es más alto que Messi) (heavy) (slim) Peter Luis SUPERLATIVES Cuando comparamos podemos comparar dos cosas, dos grupos, dos personas o dos circunstancias; es el tipo de comparación que hemos visto en la clase anterior. Puede ocurrir que queramos comparar una sola cosa o categoría de personas o circunstancias respecto a un todo (el mundo, el planeta, el universo) o a otra categoría. Este tipo de comparación se llama comparación en grado superlativo. Es muy importante recordar la diferencia entre estos dos tipos de comparaciones (el comparativo y el superlativo) para que puedas aprender a hacerlas correctamente. Con un ejemplo en español lo veremos mejor: Puedo decir: Pedro es más inteligente que tú. Peter is more intelligent than you. Puedo también decir: Pedro es el más inteligente de la clase. Peter is the most intelligent in the class. En este ejemplo no comparo a Pedro con una sola persona, sino con otra categoría o grupo de personas (la clase). Al igual que hemos visto en los comparativos, en el grado superlativo debemos distinguir los distintos tipos de adjetivos.
4 Veamos a continuación cuales son las reglas para hacer oraciones en grado superlativo en inglés: 1) Primero, tienes que ver de qué tipo de adjetivo se trata. a) Adjetivo corto. Son los de una sola síbala. Por ejemplo: -Fat :gordo/a -Tall : alto/a - Big : grande - Fast : rápido/a Regla: Si se trata de un adjetivo de una sola sílaba entonces debemos añadir "-est" al final para hacer el comparativo, de esta forma (al construir la frase antes del adjetivo hay que anteponer "the"): - The thinnest: El más delgado/a Nota: En este caso doblo la última consonante "tt" porque el adjetivo termina en vocal + consonante. Esta regla rige para todos los monosílabos terminados en vocal + consonante - The tallest: El más alto/a - The biggest: El más grande b) Adjetivo terminado en "y": Por ejemplo: - Funny: divertido- Easy: fácil- Ugly: feo/a Regla: Si el adjetivo termina en -y cambiamos la -y por una -i y añadimos -est, de esta forma (al hacer la frase hay que anteponer el artículo "the" antes del adjetivo): - The funniest: El/la más divertido - The easiest: El/la más fácil - The ugliest: El/la más feo/a c) Si el adjetivo es largo, es decir, tiene dos o más sílabas. Por ejemplo: -Beautiful: bonito -Interesting: interesante -Intelligent: inteligente Regla: En este caso anteponemos las palabras " the most" al adjetivo. - the most beautiful: La màs hermosa - the most interesting: El màs interesante - the most intelligent: El màs inteligente
5 d) Si es un adjetivo irregular. Hay un grupo de adjetivos en inglés que son especiales porque no siguen las reglas anteriores. Algunos ejemplos: -Good: bueno/a -Bad: malo/a -Old:viejo The best el mejor (de todos). The worst el peor (de todos). The oldest/eldest el más viejo o mayor (de todos).
