1 English Department Cl. C. G. ENGLISH HANDOUT 8 th GRADE 2011 Comparatives & Superlatives. U. 7 Name: Class: 8th Date: Queridas niñas: A continuación les presentamos una guía explicativa y de ejercitación. Confiamos en que se comprometan a hacer un muy buen uso de este material. Comparative Adjectives Cuando queremos hablar de dos cosas o personas, podemos compararlas. Podemos decir que son iguales o diferentes. Los adjetivos comparativos pueden ser usados para describir esas diferencias. Para su formación requerimos utilizar la base con los adjetivos. Formation of Comparative Adjectives There are two ways to make or form a comparative adjective: Short adjectives: Son los adjetivos que se componen de una sílaba o de dos terminados en Y. 1-syllable adjectives old, fast, tall, clean 2-syllable adjectives ending in y happy, easy, tidy, funny 1. Normal rule: add "-er" older, faster, taller, cleaner 2. Variation: if the adjective ends in -e, just add r late later nice nicer Si el adjetivo finaliza en la vocal e, solo se agrega la letra r. 3. Variation: if the adjective ends in consonant, vowel, consonant, double the last consonant. Si el adjetivo termina en consonante, vocal y consonante, se repite la ultima consonante y se le agrega er. big bigger thin thinner fat fatter
2 4. 2-syllable adjectives ending in y happy, easy, tidy. happier, easier, tidier. change the y to i. Long adjectives: todos los adjetivos de dos o más sílabas, se les agrega la palabra MORE 1. 2-syllable adjectives not ending in y modern, pleasant Adjetivos de dos sílabas que no terminan en -Y more modern, more pleasant 2. all adjectives of 3 or more syllables expensive, intellectual more expensive, more intellectual Exception Irregular adjectives The following adjectives have irregular forms: good better Example: You are better than me at English. well (healthy) better que( para comparar) bad worse far farther/further EXERCISES Write the correct comparative: 1. I'm than my brother. (old) 2. Electrical goods are usually in America than in Britain. (cheap) 3. Michael Jackson was a singer than George Michael. (good) 4. 3 Superlative Adjective Un adjetivo superlativo expresa el más alto grado con respecto a otros. El más alto La más rápida Usamos el adjetivo superlativo para describir la cualidad extrema de algo o alguien dentro de un grupo. En el ejemplo a continuación biggest es la forma superlativa del adjetivo big. A B C A is the biggest. La letra A es la más grande. Formation of Superlative Adjectives As with comparative adjectives, there are two ways to form a superlative adjective: short adjectives: add "-est" A los adjetivos cortos se le agrega -est. long adjectives: use "most" A los adjetivos largos se les agrega -most. Además se les agrega el artículo the The most important The biggest Short adjectives 1-syllable adjectives 2-syllable adjectives ending in y easiest old, fast: the oldest, the fastest happy, easy: the happiest, the Normal rule: add "-est" If the adjective ends in -e, just add st old the oldest late the latest Si el adjetivo finaliza en la letra e, se le agrega st.
4 If the adjective ends in consonant, vowel, consonant, double the last consonant the biggest, big Si el adjetivo termina en consonante, vocal, consonante, se repite la última consonante. sad the saddest If the adjective ends in -y, change the y to I happy the happiest Long adjectives 2-syllable adjectives not ending in y most pleasant modern, pleasant the most modern/the Adjetivos de 2 sílabas que no terminan en -Y all adjectives of 3 or more syllables todos los adjetivos de 3 o más sílabas most intelectual expensive, intellectual the most expensive, the Exceptions With some 2-syllable adjectives, we can use '-est' or 'most': Con algunos adjetivos de 2 sílabas, podemos usar cualquiera de las dos terminaciones. quiet the quietest/ the most quiet clever the cleverest/the most clever narrow the narrowest/ the most narrow simple the simplest/ the most simple Irregular Adjectives The following adjectives have irregular forms: good the best bad the worst far the furthest Examples: John is 1m75.
