3 Week of January 5, 2014 Page Three REGALOS Y DONES GIFTS AND GRACE It s the season for giving and receiving gifts. Most everyone likes to be surprised by a nicely wrapped, colorful gift just for that person. Some people like to receive tings that they would not have bought for themselves; some like to receive gifts on their own wish list ; some like to receive cash! Gifts can be symbols of something bigger than just an economic or material exchange-- gifts can show that we care and that someone is important in our lives. Even if we do not have a lot of money for store bought gifts for people in our lives, a heart-felt letter or card can be written for family or friends. This takes a will, some time and some thought. Even if the words are not perfect in such a letter, the sentiment that you care will come through clearly. Has it been a while since you handwrote a letter or card like that? Perhaps writing our feelings out could be the very best gift for a loved one something that they are waiting to hear from us. Gifts can show our love. Our Catholic faith is also centered on gifts. This weekend we celebrate the Epiphany as part of our Christmas liturgical season. This important celebration shows us the wise men from the east who had been looking for the newborn king of the Jews in order to worship him. Once they found Jesus they offered him gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh. Essentially, they are responding to the gift of the Child Jesus given to the world God made human. In our faith today, this gift exchange happens at the altar at each mass: Christ continues to give himself to us and to make his love present through his real presence; we accept Eucharist as a pure gift a grace. In return through our response of Amen, we give ourselves back to God before his altar. The love we receive in communion is what we give to others too. I also believe that the material gifts and letters/cards that we give others can reflect our love for Christ. The power of the incarnation, God-made-human, reminds us that Christ lives in each of us. So when we honor one another, we also honor Christ in the exchange of gifts. In our own ways, we share the gifts that Christ has given us life, faith and love. May this whole season of Christmas be a gift to you and yours; may Christ s loving presence be a grace and best present to you. -Father Art, cmf Es el tiempo de dar y recibir regalos. La mayoría les gusta ser sorprendido por un regalo muy bien envuelto, un regalo muy colorido solo para esa persona. Algunas personas les gusta recibir cosas que quizás ellos mismos no se comprarían; otros les gusta recibir regalos que ponen en sus propias lista de deseos ; otros les gusta recibir dinero en efectivo! Los regalos pueden ser símbolos de algo más grande que solo un intercambio económico o material regalos nos indican que nos interesa y que alguien es importante en nuestras vidas. Aunque no tengamos mucho dinero para comprar los regalos en una tienda para estas personas en nuestras vidas, se puede escribir una carta amable o una tarjeta para nuestros familiares y amigos. Esto requiere de voluntad, de tiempo y de tiempo para pensar. Aunque las palabras no sean perfectas en la carta, el sentimiento de tu interés será muy claro. Ha pasado algún tiempo desde que has escrito una carta o una tarjeta así? Quizás escribir nuestros sentimientos podría ser un gran regalo para un ser querido algo que ellos has estado esperando escuchar de nosotros. Regalos demuestran nuestro amor. Nuestra fe Católica también está centrada en regalos. Este fin de semana, celebramos la Epifanía como parte de la temporada litúrgica de Navidad. Esta celebración nos enseña a los Reyes Magos que venían del Este buscando al Rey de los Judíos recién nacido para poder adorarlo. Una vez que lo encontraron le ofrecieron regalos de oro, incienso y mirra. Esencialmente, ellos están respondiendo al regalo del Niño Jesús ofrecido al mundo Dios hizo al humano. En nuestra fe hoy día, el intercambio de estos regalos sucede en el altar en cada misa: Cristo continua dándose así mismo a nosotros y hace su amor presente por medio de su presencia real; nosotros aceptamos la Eucaristía como un regalo puro una gracia. A cambio por medio de nuestra respuesta del AMEN, nos damos nosotros mismo a Dios ante su altar. El amor que recibimos en la comunión es lo que nosotros damos a los demás también. Yo también creo que los regalos materiales y las cartas/tarjetas que damos a otros pueden reflejar nuestro amor por Cristo. El poder de la Encarnación, Dios hizo al Humano, nos recuerda que Cristo vive en cada uno de nosotros. Así que cuando nos respetamos unos a otros, también estamos honrando a Cristo en el intercambio de regalos. En nuestra manera muy propia, compartimos los dones que Cristo nos ha dado vida, fe y amor. Que todo este tiempo de Navidad sea un regalo para usted y todos los suyos; que la presencia amorosa de Cristo sean una gracia y el mejor regalo para usted. P. Arturo, cmf

4 Week of January 5, 2014 YOUTH PAGE Page Four Darkness covers the earth, and thick clouds cover the peoples; but upon you the Lord shines, and over you appears his glory. (Isaiah 60:2) Our parish community is proud of our hundreds of children and youth active in our community, who bring God s light to our world, here represented by just a few. Getting back on track in 2014: There will be a Youth Council meeting Friday, January 10 at 6:00 pm in the parish office. So what is the Youth Council? The Youth Council, founded in 1998, takes time each month to evaluate parish Youth Activities, and to plan events that will interest children and youth of the neighborhood. Who can be on the Youth Council? Membership is pretty flexible, usually the members are between 7th and 12th grades. What are some topics the Youth Council is working on? Recently, the Youth Council sponsored events such as Game Day and the Haunted Office. Beyond those one-time fun events, the Council usually takes part in the Viacrucis and prepared a night of the Novena to La Virgen just last month. How can I become a member of the Youth Council? Come to Friday s meeting, or call Sister Angie at for more information. The Feast of the Epiphany today marks the end of the Church s celebration of Christmas. The example of the Three Kings in giving gifts is the root of our tradition of giftgiving. But there is more about the tradition than just giving material gifts. Muchos cocinaron pozole o arroz o otro tipo de comida para compartir el día 12 después de la Misa Solemne, otras ofrecieron sus hogares para las Posadas, otras trajeron flores durante la Novena a la Virgen; hubo quienes prepararon chocolate para las procesionesde las Posadas, y no faltaron quienes trajeron piñatas y dulces y finalmente, no faltaron quienes distribuyeron las hojas de los cantos...a todas esas personas, Muchas gracias por contribuir a hacer de nuestra parroquia una auténtica comunidad! Whether you prepared pozole or rice or other food to share the night of the 12th after the People s Mass, or you opened your home to a Posadas gathering; whether you brought flowers to the Novena or prepared Hot Chocolate for a Posadas procession, whether you offered a piñata for a children s party or you helped distribute song sheets.it is thanks to YOU that our parish is truly experienced as a community!
