Agnes Scott College Spring 2009 Spanish 101 A (M/W/F 8:00-8:50) Profesora: Stacy Rusnak Email: srusnak@agnesscott.edu Office: Buttrick 218A Extension: 5123 Office Hours: Tuesday 8:30 am 9:20 am, Monday, Wednesday 10:00 11:00, or by appointment. Required material: Textbook package includes listening CD: Así es 4 th ed., Nancy Levy- Konesky and Karen Daggett, (Holt, Rinehart and Winston). The video you need (Así es) to complete the cultural assignments is on reserve in the library. Note: It is a violation of the Honor Code to possess or use the instructor s edition of the textbook and supporting materials. Course Description: This course will be conducted in Spanish with a student-centered approach that aims at giving you many opportunities to interact in the target language during class sessions. Use of various media (video, text-specific multimedia, listening CD s, and the Dasher computer drills) will facilitate your comprehension of the Spanish language and cultures. This course is only for true beginners of Spanish. Anyone with one year or more of previous studies Spanish may not enroll in Spanish 101. A violation of this policy constitutes an infraction of the honor code. Address any concerns to Prof. Stacy Rusnak x5123. Objectives: Provide opportunities for students to begin communicating in both oral and written Spanish. Foster an appreciation of the diversity of peoples and cultures in the Spanish-speaking world. Assuage the anxieties that come with foreign language learning in an all-spanish classroom. Sharpen student s listening skills to promote comprehension of spoken Spanish. Class Requirements: (See course information handout regarding details of the following class requirements) Attendance and class participation are essential for demonstrating involvement in classroom activities. Students are required to participate in discussions of culture based on course assignments. Lack of preparation on homework assignments also will affect your grade negatively. Homework scheduled for a particular day must be prepared before that class session. Note that all homework assignments are from the textbook, unless otherwise specified. We will go over some exercises in class but we will not spend the entire class period going over homework assignments. Since grammar is explained clearly and in English in the textbook, you are responsible for preparing homework based on your reading. Grammar will be explained only briefly in class at the request of the student and in order to target difficult points. This will allow us to spend class time using the language rather than talking about it. 1
Tests and the midterm will be administered as scheduled on this course syllabus. Note: quizzes frequently will be administered without previous notice from the instructor and may be on vocabulary, grammar or cultural readings. There will be NO MAKE-UPS given for missed quizzes. The final exam is cumulative and selfscheduled during exam week. IMPORTANT NOTE: In foreign language learning it is essential that you keep up with the assignments and seek help as soon as any difficulty arises. Do not wait for work or problems to accumulate! Please come see me, the Teaching Assistant, Natalia Hidalgo, or one of the Spanish peer tutors. We are here to help you!!! Final grade will be calculated as follows: Written homework and Participation 25% Tests (3) 25% Quizzes 25% Final exam 25% General Criteria for Assessing the Participation Grade: 90- Comes to class prepared and participates enthusiastically in pair and group work. Very frequently volunteers in class discussion. 80- Often makes an effort to volunteer in class and participates in pair and group work. 70- Sometimes volunteers, but usually waits to be called on to participate. 60- Rarely volunteers in class. 0- Makes negligible effort to contribute to the class or keep up with assignments. Note: Preparation of weekly cultural component, your contribution to homework exercises and class activities are an integral part of your participation grade. Course Evaluations: At the end of the semester you will be asked to submit an online evaluation of your experience in this course. Please take the time to evaluate the course. The college and I take your comments seriously, and they help us to re-assess the ways in which the course progresses, what activities work, and which do not. Your input is greatly appreciated. 2
