Beginning Saturday night, October 13th and recurring on the second Saturday monthly the series will feature live musical performances from popular local artists. First on stage is hip-hop/neo-soul favorite LG and Unwritten. The free concert will take place from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Centennial Plaza clock tower, just outside Starbucks (241 W. Fifth St). LG and Unwritten is a Ventura County-based band lead by Lyrically Gifted, a multi-talented MC, producer and promoter, known throughout the 805 music scene for dynamic lyrics, smooth rhythms, and eclectic performances. The Education Foundation of VC MABA hopes to increase its fund-raising this year because so many students are doing great things and working very hard to get an VC MABA raises funds for local students education in these difficult times. Farrell is best known for his eight years on M*A*S*H and five seasons on Providence. Farrell, an actor, is also a writer, director and producer. A social and political activist for Carmen Ramirez will recieve this year's VC MABA Alice McGrath Warrior for Justice Award. over three decades, he has served on human rights and peace delegations to many countries. As president of Death Penalty Focus since 1994, he has visited too many death rows and speaks, debates, writes and coordinates efforts to stop executions across the country. Farrell is currently involved in the SAFE California Campaign, an initiative to end capital punishment in California, and an international effort in support of a worldwide moratorium on the death penalty. He is the author of two books: Just Call Me Mike: A Journey to Actor and Activist, and Of Mule and Man. This year the President s Awardee will be Dien Le, who graduated cum laude from UCLA, and received his J.D. from Loyola Law School. Dien has previously served as a Judge Pro Tem for the Small Claims Division of the Ventura County Superior Court. Dien is currently a partner at Westlake Village-based Sullivan Taketa LLP. Dien is currently the 2012 Ventura County Bar Association President. In early 2012, Dien created the Diversity Bar Alliance (the VCDBA), a group comprised of representatives from the minority sections (Women Lawyers, Mexican American Bar Association, Black Attorneys, and Asian American Attorneys). The VCDBA brings together the various bar sections to promote their mutual support and to create a coalition of community organizations dedicated to increasing judicial diversity in Ventura County. Carmen Ramirez, who will recieve this year's Alice McGrath Warrior for Justice Award, is a public interest lawyer who has served the community since she was admitted to practice in December of 1974, graduated from Loyola School of Law, Los Angeles in May 1974. She was elected to a four-year term on the Oxnard City Council in November 2010. For 16 years she was Executive Director of Channel Counties Legal Services Association, which was located in Oxnard, serving the legal needs of low-income and disabled clients and their families in both counties. In June 2005, she was elected to the Board of Governors of the State Bar of California for a three-year term, representing the attorneys of five counties. She has served on the statewide Executive Committee of the Bench Bar Coalition, which promotes the needs of the public to access to justice as well as the budgetary needs of the California judicial system before the California legislature. VC MABA was establishied over thirty years ago in Ventura County. Its current membership is comprised of attorneys who practice in a wide variety of fields, law students and members of our community. The organization said they are committed to the advancement of the legal profession and the empowerment of the Latino community through advocacy and the promotion of equal justice. LLAME AL 483-1008 Un hombre de Camarillo ha sido sentenciado a pasar 19 años tras las rejas por la muerte de un jóven, quien falleció al ser apuñalado durante una fiesta de graduación. El pasado mes de julio, Isaac Gil, de 22 años de edad, fue encontrado culpable de haber causado la muerte de Andrew Singler, un jóven de 18 años de edad de la Ciudad de Camarillo. Récords de la corte indican que el incidente ocurrió la madrugada del 14 de junio del 2008 en la cuadra 4300 de Hitch Boulevard, cerca de Moorpark. Aparentemente, la fiesta había sido organizada para celebrar la graduación de Joshua Morningstar, quien había invitado a 50 personas. El número de personas que acudieron al evento sobrepasó los 200, segun indica- ron los abogados fiscales. Una de las personas que acudió a la fiesta fue Gil, a quien las autoridades clasifican como un pandillero. Informes presentados en la corte indican que Gil y otros miembros de su pandilla comenzaron a asaltar físicamente a las personas que se encontraban en la fiesta y fue mientras esto ocurría que Gil sacó un cuchillo y apuñaló a Singler. Segun las reportes médicos, Singler fue apuñalado dos veces, una de ellas perforó su corazón. De acuerdo a testigos, después de ser apuñalado Singler caminó por el camino hacia la cochera y al final de éste, cayó al suelo y falleció. Después de más de 30 meses de investigar el incidente y con la mínima colaboración de los que presenciaron el crimen, los detec- tives finalmente lograron entablar un caso criminal en contra de Gil gracias a la ayuda de uno de los miembros de su pandilla que decidió colaborar con las autoridades. Detectives indican que con la ayuda del hombre, lograron grabar a Gil en secreto. Las grabaciones captaron conversaciones en las que Gil hablaba sobre la muerte de Singler, acto que confesó haber hecho y del cual hasta presumía, segun lo indican las grabaciones. Gil fue encontrado culpable de haber asesinado a Singler. A pesar de que la fiscalía buscaba cargos por asesinato en primer grado, el jurado decidió que el incidente no fue premeditado y optó por encontrarlo culpable de asesinato en segundo grado, crimen con una sentencia menos severa. Ventura Road. Aparentemente, la pareja intentaba retirarse del lugar cuando fueron confrontados por dos sospechosos. Fuentes de la policía indican que al ser confrontados, la víctima, cuya identidad no ha sido revelada, salió del vehículo y fue entonces cuando se inició una pelea entre ellos. Durante la pelea, la víctima notó que había sido apuñalado. Los sospechosos escaparon a pie del lugar de los hechos y la esposa de la víctima lo llevó al hospital, indicó la policía. De acuerdo a informes, la víctima fue apuñalada varias veces. Fuentes médicas indican que las heridas que recibió son moderadas y no lo ponen en peligro de perder su vida. Las autoridades piden la ayuda del público para encontrar a los responsables de este crimen. Página B5 FESTIVAL MULTICULTURAL Un sin número de niños y adultos se reunieron el sábado en La Placita de Oxnard para celebrar el Décimo Séptimo Festival Multicultural, un evento que se lleva a cabo año con año con el propósito de destacar y festejar la herencia cultural y étnica de la Ciudad de Oxnard. Durante el festival, el cual comenzó a las 10:00 a.m. y terminó a las 7:00 p.m., se expusieron los diversos grupos étnicos que han contribuido a la historia y a la esencia cultural de Oxnard y la diversidad del Condado de Ventura. Entre las culturas representadas en el festival se expuso la portuguesa, china, alemana, griega, africana, francesa, japonesa, irlandesa, inglesa y sin duda la mexicana y de la tribu indígena chumash. Oxnard, una ciudad con más de 200,000 habitantes, está compuesta de más del 75 por ciento de hispanos, en su mayoría de origen mexicano. Hablando de personas que han dejado una marca en la historia de Oxnard, durante el festival también se recalcaron las contri- buciones de varios individuos que han dejado un gran legado en la ciudad, entre ellos, el Dr. Manuel M. Página B6 Se parapetó en habitación por más de 1 hora Un hombre de Oxnard fue arrestado por las autoridades después de haberse parapetado en la casa de sus padres la noche del miércoles 3 de octubre, informaron fuentes oficiales de la policía. Segun reportes, aproximadamente a las 11:14 p.m., oficiales del Departamento de Policía de Oxnard recibieron informes so- bre un pleito entre familiares que ocurría en una residencia ubicada en la cuadra 300 de North I Street. Aparentemente, el pleito había sido causado por un padre y su hijo, quienes al parecer tenían una disputa. De acuerdo a informes, cuando los policías llegaron al lugar de los hechos descubrieron que el hijo, identificado como Gustavo Medel Meza, enfrentaba una orden de arresto por un crimen menor, el cual no fue especificado por las autoridades. La policía indica que Medel Meza, de 24 años de edad, evadió a las autoridades y se encerró en una de las recámaras de la casa, rehusando a colaborar con PIDEN JUSTICIA PARA LOS INDOCUMENTADOS bombas de gas lagrimogeno, las cuales son comúnmente utilizadas durante este tipo de incidentes, para capturarlo. Entre la información divulgada se puede destacar la siguiente: la expectativa de vida de un habitante de México y un estado- unidense en el año 1920 era de 33 y 54 años respectivamente. Hoy en día la expectativa es de 79 y 81 respectivamente. El costo o inversión en salud por año por cada habitante, en dólares, es de $833 en México, mientras que en Estados Unidos el costo es $7, 290. La expectativa de vida no se ve sustancialmente aumentada por el costo del cuidado médico. Segun la información divulgada, en el Condado de Ventura, los latinos representan el 40.9% de la población, mientras que los anglosajones el 48.1. El 17% de los latinos tienen ingresos que los sitúan por debajo de la línea de la pobreza. También el 25.8% de los latinos no han terminado la educación preparatoria (High School). Después del Dr. González, tuvo lugar la ponencia de la Doctora Cheryl Lambing Ortega, de la Agencia de Salud del Condado de Ventura, quien también es directora médica para la educación profesional y comunitaria. Lambing Ortega basó su ponencia en: Que tiene que ver el amor con la sa- 3:30 de la tarde y se presentaron diversos tópicos, que incluyeron temas como el impacto que tendrán los cambios en las leyes de la salud en los adultos mayores, así como la prevención de embarazos en las adolescentes, y una muy interesante ponencia acerca de las prácticas de la medicina tradicional en México a base de plantas medicinales impartida por David Leyva Mendoza.
