She was delighted to see her father, Fortunato de los Santos, the founder of the Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, then called the Mexican Chamber of Commerce, prominently featured there. His vision created the first Hispanic Chamber in the U.S. right here in San Antonio a significant accomplishment, considering there are more than 600 Hispanic Chambers across the country which sprung from the San Antonio original, today a powerful force for good in the community. This is wonderful, Coindreau said -- and even filled in missing information for Lance Aaron, project director and member of the Hispanic Chamber, explaining who was who in photographs from the era. And she would know. Just a few weeks earlier on October 19, her Christening Day, Coindreau, affectionately known as Aunt Carmen, celebrated her 100th birthday. The centenarian was born to Carmen Tarin and Fortunato de los Santos, who were married at San Fernando Cathedral. Her father started out with a Singer Sewing Machine franchise that covered most of Mexico and husband and wife traveled from city to city opening offices. Coindreau remembers her father as an extraordinary salesman and his offices sold more machines than anyone else in the Singer Company. Part of the reason for his great success was her mother his secret weapon. Thanks to Coindreau s mother, a talented seamstress, De los Santos sweetened the deal for his customers: buy a sewing machine and get free embroidery lessons from an expert. One of Coindreau s earliest memories, when she was just six or seven years old, is of two Generals successfully convincing her mother to embroider a picture of a horse s face in wood during World War I. She has very fond memories, too, of her sister, Juanita, born June 23, 1910, who later married Ed Martinez and had two sons, Fortunato and Edward. Juanita died of pneumonia when she was 25 years old -- Penicillin had not yet been discovered. Coindreau says the advances in medicine particularly the discovery of Penicillin, were probably the most significant and important in her lifetime. When Carmen was nine years old, her mother and baby sister died in childbirth. The girls were boarded at Incarnate Word for several years, until De Los Santos married Sarita Pizzini, and the family reunited under one roof on San Saba street on the Westside of town. Their home was near the F de los Santos Furniture Store her father opened on Commerce Street. Coindreau vividly remembers the day her father shot guns off in the air to wake his neighbors and warn them about rising floodwaters during the Big Flood of 1921 and scenes of furniture floating in the family s store, which was full of water. Remember San Antonio was an itty bitty town then, everybody knew everybody, she said. Years later, the store would be the gathering place where so many would see the first television signals on the first television sets available in San Antonio the introduction of the television was also life-changing in Coindreau s estimation. We all got together for that first broadcast we watched on a big floor model, in black and white. I think the radio was so important, too, we listened all the time, she explained. She happily recalls Sunday afternoons with her dad, too visiting polo matches at Brackenridge Park, seeing a movie and enjoying dinner together before returning to Incarnate Word. As a student, Coindreau loved painting, piano, and violin, and thought her career path was to be an artist. True to the times they lived in, her father, ever the realist, did not agree. She remembers his words to this day: Do you want to starve? Coindreau, just 15, understood, and joined her father in the family business and learned everything the bookkeeper could teach her. By the time she was 19, De Los Santos often left her in charge of the furniture store in his absence. She remembers the successful entrepreneur was one of the first to have a motor car in San Antoniothe kind that needed to be cranked up front. My father fashioned a seat so I could reach the pedals, she remembered. Her father also served as president of the Casino Mexicano on Dolorosa Street, a site for many wonderful parties. It was at just such a party, a Masquerade Ball where, dressed as a Spanish Senorita, met Roberto Antonio Coindreau, who came as a pirate. They married soon after that first meeting, and the love of her life gave her the greatest gift. Really, he was the one who taught me how to enjoy life, Coindreau said. She remembers other great lessons, too. My father taught me It is better to be the head of a mouse, than the tail of a tiger, Coindreau shared. And she uses the proverb as a guide even today. Her father passed away 1963. An all-girls 30 s road trip During the courtship, Coindreau became lifelong friends with her future husband s sisters, Josephine Coindreau (Clancy) and Mary Coindreau (McDonald). In 1932, the three friends plus future mother-in-law Josefina Inez Reyes de Coindreau, and a friend from Monterrey (possibly Locha Villarreal) piled into Josephine s car and set out on a four-week long roadtrip to California, up the Pacific Coast Highway to San Francisco, stopping in Las Vegas and Yellowstone on the trip. Coindreau recalls the five high-spirited women had a grand time, and vividly remembers seeing so many sea lions along the California coastline. Finally out of money, Coindreau called her, who saved the day by wiring money via Western Union. Carmen continued to work at her father s side until the wedding on June 1, 1936 at San Fernando Cathedral. Her future husband also worked at the store established himself as quite a salesman. His sales ability earned him recognition and bonuses at Wolff & Marx and Pincus Men s Store. So they enjoyed invitations to big parties and tickets to the theater, opera, and other elegant events. See Carmen De Los Santos on page 4-A Mrs. Carmen De Los Santos Coindreau on a recent visit to the Museo Alameda with her nieces, Jo Anne Clancy Comeaux and Pat Clancy, and Bob Comeaux and Lance Aaron, who gave them a tour of the Renaissance and Revolution exhibit last month. Síguela en Twitter @ maria_marin SAISD guest Op-Ed By James Howard, SAISD Board President Last November, the SAISD community supported a $515 million bond, which represents the largest investment to improve schools in the district s history. A year later, I am pleased to report that the results of that Yes vote are already being seen throughout the district. Bond 2010 projects are well underway, on schedule and within budget. Four of eight high schools tracks have been re-surfaced, nearly all elementary schools not receiving major renovations now have new or upgraded playgrounds and new computers have been delivered and installed at the majority of campuses that will receive them as part of the bond program. Computer deliveries should be completed by the end of November. In all, 68 schools will receive bond-funded computers. In progress are installations of security fences and keycard access systems to enhance school safety, as well as design work for camera security systems that will be installed at Ask the Judge: the Judge Judy Court, part 3 In the last two Ask the Judge columns I informed the reader how one qualifies for the Judge Judy Show from Justice of the Peace Court Small Claims docket, and how in our court we are not allowed to act or talk like Judge Judy under penalty of reprimand, suspension or removal from the bench. As stated in those columns, the nationally syndicated television shows send their regional producers into our court to discover juicy cases that will lend themselves to reality television. Predictably they are able to dig them out and put them on air. Meanwhile in the reality of the Justice of the Peace Court where thousands of those cases are heard on a daily basis by JPs in courtrooms all over the country, our cases sometimes border on the absurd as well as on the reality shows themselves. Despite the fact that I have a prepared spiel I present to those present in the court to remind those in the courtroom that I am NOT Judge Mathis, Judge Alex or especially Judge Judy, By Judge Steve Walker people still want to act as if they are on reality television. Unexpected incidents occur when we least expect them and defendants and plaintiffs alike sometimes go off the deep end so to speak. Despite the fact I remind them that they are not allowed to call the other person in the case, a liar, cheat, thief or talk about their mama! they do it anyway at their own risk. On more than one occasion I have come very close to citing the participants for contempt of court. By law I can remand them to the Bexar County Detention Facility downtown for a minimum of 24 hours up to a maximum of 72 hours for unbecoming behavior or inappropriate language. It is interesting to note than on few occasions in my courtroom, I have discovered that the real reason the plaintiff is suing the defendant has nothing to do with the case before me. In other words, they are upset at the defendant for some perceived slight and their response is to take them to court to retaliate and publicly embarrass them in a court of law. One example that has actually occurred in my court in the past three years more than once, has been when a plaintiff sues the defendant because they were initially sued by the defendant and lost a small claims case in a previous court appearance. Translated: the plaintiff sues for the same amount that they lost in a judgment to the defendant in a prior case, believing they will win their money back under different circumstances! That would be classified as naïve or delusional! As a judge I can assure the reader that the Small Claims docket is never dull or boring. Lastly as always, if you are due in court, be sure to show up to court on time. It is in everyone s best interest. Lastly as always, if you are due in court, be sure to show up to court on time. It is in everyone s best interest. Justice of the Peace, Pct. 2 Steve Walker is a Vietnam Veteran and a former journalist. A page from San Antonio history Local history expert Lance Aaron reports: 50 years ago this week, Henry B. Gonzalez made history. On November 4th, 1961 he beat John Goode Jr. to become the 1st Mexican- schools. Design work is also on track, and will continue through the school year, for the 23 campuses that will receive major renovations, as well as for the Alamo Stadium and Convocation Center and the district s transportation facility. The first of those construction projects is set to begin in summer 2012. We know that without the community s support these projects that are so crucial to enhancing our students safety and educational experiences wouldn t be possible. We are committed to keeping the community well-informed about bond implementation and to providing opportunities for public input. We have also reached out to small, minority, and women-owned businesses in our community to ensure that they have the information they need to compete with other firms. Dozens of community meetings have been held to provide information and gather input for the school renovations, and more will be held at critical points throughout the process. We need your input at these meetings and ask that you help us to encourage others in your community to attend. American from Texas elected to the U.S. Congress. Vice President Lyndon B. Johnson, followed by an entourage of Latinos in downtown San Antonio, encouraged voters: A 24-member Citizens Oversight Committee appointed by the Board continues to hold us accountable. The volunteer group meets monthly to receive updates from the bond management teams to closely monitor the pace and quality of the bond s progress. COC meetings are open to the public. You can stay up to date on our progress by visiting our bond web site at www.saisd.net/bondprojects, where you can access detailed monthly reports for each of the bond projects. I am proud of the work we ve accomplished so far and pleased with the process that the Board selected to implement this program. Knowing that capital projects alone will not improve education for our students, we have also formed strong collaborative relationships with various entities -- the city, county and local colleges and universities, to name just a few -- that complement our bond efforts in providing additional opportunities for students. We have another three years before all bond projects are completed and hope you will stay engaged and hold us accountable as we work to improve your schools. to show our nation that a Good American can be voted to U.S. Congress in spite of their race. Don t forget to vote this Tuesday! Además, en esta era Question: What are the Medicare premiums for 2012 been announced? Answer: Yes. The Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) announced the 2012 premiums late last week. The following information is directly from the CMS website and the CMS Office of Public Affairs. The standard Medicare part B monthly premium will be $99.90 in 2012, a $15.50 decrease over the 2011 premium of $115.40. However, most Medicare beneficiaries were held harmless in 2011 and paid $96.40 per month. This was due to the fact that there was no cost of living adjustment for the past two years. The 2012 premium represents a $3.50 increase for them. Medicare Part B covers a portion of the cost of physician s services, outpatient hospital services, certain home health services, durable medical equipment, and other items. For Medicare Part A, which pays for inpatient hospital, skilled nursing facility, and some home health care, about 99 percent of Medicare beneficiaries do not pay a premium since they or their spouses have at least 40 quarters of Medicare-covered employment. However, some enrollees age 65 and over and certain persons with disabilities who have fewer than 30 quarters of coverage obtain Part A by paying a monthly premium. This premium will be $451 for 2012, an increase of $1 from 2011. Those who have between 30 and 39 quarters of coverage may buy Part A at a reduced monthly premium rate which is $248 for 2012, the same amount as in 2011. The dollar increase in benefit checks is expected to be large enough on average to cover the increase in the Part B premium of $3.50 that most beneficiaries will experience. For those who were paying the standard premium of $115.40, their benefits checks will only increase. To learn more about the Medicare premiums for 2012, visit www.medicare. gov/cost/ or call 1-800-MEDI CARE 1-800-633-4227. Building the restaurants: El Charro is born During World War II, Robert opened a bar near the Southern Pa cific railroad tracks and soon after, Robert s Drive-In on Broadway. Those experiences led to the open ing of the elegant El Charro restau rant on 2618 Fredericksburg Road, site of the current Fortunato Chinese Restaurant. The couple moved the restaurant to the well remembered site on Broadway, now a Jim s Restaurant. One of the most striking memo ries Coindreau has of their time in the restaurant is of John F. Kennedy. I remember the excitement, the motorcade with President John Ken nedy and First Lady Jackie coming down the Broadway, directly in front of the restaurant. It was the day before the assassination, and he looked directly at me and waved. I was thrilled, she said. The couple s successful restaurant ventures were not just the result of Coindreau s famed bookkeeping skills and her husband s extraor dinary marketing and sales ability, but also thanks to Coindreau s at tention to cleanliness. To this day, Coindreau has a particular pet peeve: everything must always be spotless. Even before the medical community understood that simply washing hands could stop the spread of germs, Coindreau was sure of it. Her niece, Mary Patricia Clancy, remembers the restaurant was so clean, you could eat off the floor. El Charro, well known for its wonderful menu, atmosphere (with its fireplace), and absolute cleanli ness, was a gathering place for the community. Robert Coindreau was the ultimate host and regaled his friends and patrons with stories and charm. And in spite of the prohibi tion, friends could count on a nip of tequila or whiskey, now and then. By 1974, Dr. Denton Cooley told Robert he had about a year to live thanks to an ailing heart. But our centenarian, always a step ahead of the times, took charge of her husband s menu and helped extend his life seven years more. The cen tenarian said until recently, she took a baby aspirin a day, and even now, loves her carrot juice and believes in vitamin C, which she takes daily. Following Cooley s diagnosis, the couple traveled to London, see ing the headdress of Montezuma at the London Museum, attending a performance of The King and I, shopping at Harrod s Department Store and betting on horse races. Carmen enjoyed the extended time they had together. So naturally, after Robert s death in 1981 at the age of 75, Carmen traveled extensively - to Mexico, then China, Panama, Italy, France, Portugal, and her favorite India, in the 1990s after her 80th birthday. I think I am most proud of the fact that even thought there were sad moments, I have almost always been happy, I never feel sorry for myself, she said. (continued from page 1-A) Coindreau is a devout Catholic, and one of her greatest wishes is to meet Archbishop Gustavo. Asked what her secret is for being 100 years young, she paused ever so briefly. If I were to give advice, I would say remember to love others as you love yourself, Coindreau said. Taking DIOVAN during pregnancy can cause injury and even death to your unborn baby. If you get pregnant, stop taking DIOVAN and call your doctor right away. Talk to your doctor about other ways to lower your blood pressure if you plan to become pregnant. What is DIOVAN? DIOVAN is a prescription medicine called an angiotensin receptor blocker (ARB). It is used in adults to: lower high blood pressure (hypertension) in adults and children, 6 to 16 years of age. treat heart failure in adults. In these patients, DIOVAN may lower the need for hospitalization that happens from heart failure. improve the chance of living longer after a heart attack (myocardial infarction) in adults. DIOVAN is not for children under 6 years of age or children with certain kidney problems. High Blood Pressure (Hypertension). Blood pressure is the force in your blood vessels when your heart beats and when your heart rests. You have high blood pressure when the force is too much. DIOVAN can help your blood vessels relax so your blood pressure is lower. High blood pressure makes the heart work harder to pump blood throughout the body and causes damage to the blood vessels. If high blood pressure is not treated, it can lead to stroke, heart attack, heart failure, kidney failure and vision problems. Heart Failure occurs when the heart is weak and cannot pump enough blood to your lungs and the rest of your body. Just walking or moving can make you short of breath, so you may have to rest a lot. Heart Attack (Myocardial Infarction): A heart attack is caused by a blocked artery that results in damage to the heart muscle. What should I tell my doctor before taking DIOVAN? Tell your doctor about all your medical conditions including whether you: have any allergies. For treatment of high blood pressure, take DIOVAN one time each day, at the same time each day. If your child cannot swallow tablets, or if tablets are not available in the prescribed strength, your pharmacist will mix DIOVAN as a liquid suspension for your child. For adult patients with heart failure or who have had a heart attack, take DIOVAN two times each day, at the same time each day. The fact there s even a question these two men would fight, and that there has been a question for so long, says all you need to know about both facts. Twenty months after the two were supposed to slug it out for $50 million in a fight that might actually have moved the needle, Mayweather insisted that his opponent jump through so many fine-print anti-doping hoops that the whole thing got called off. It smelled, to me, like good old-fashioned fear. Regardless, it looked to everyone like what it was. The fact boxing has been unable to put on its one marquee matchup that might pull in nonboxing aficionados is like newspapers no longer valuing news. Or politicians ignoring the needs of their constituents because they Scorpions FC narrows down ambassadors search By Kristian Jaime kristian@kristianjaime.com On the verge of the 2012 inaugural season, San Antonio Scorpions FC just got closer to finding their team ambassadors. The recent event at Chango s Havana Club was about more than spreading the word of professional soccer in the Alamo City. It was about finding the ladies who could take the soccer for a cause message to the masses. There is that pent up demand for professional soccer in San Antonio, said team President, Michael Hitchcock. The fans have had a say in developing their team from the beginning. The fan (Courtesy photo) think there s little need to pay attention. Or phone companies not worrying about the rise of cell phones and thus worrying even less about keeping their customers happy. It all equals the same thing: a rousing wave of unpopularity in which, ultimately, those you rely on decide they no longer like you, want you or are in any way willing to pay you for your services. Wake up, boxing. Listen closely, Floyd, Manny and everyone else. It s 2011. The world moves very, very quickly today. Baseball is no longer the driving force in the sports world, phones now talk response is amazing considering we haven t signed a player yet and we already have over 2,000 season ticket holders. The early fanfare for San Antonio s latest professional team does not surprise Hitchcock, but with over 30 years of Major League Soccer (MLS) experience in the front office, Scorpions FC is up to the task. First on the to do list is ensure a good MLS product with a new 5,000 seat stadium in the works with long-term plans to expand to 18,000 seats. The eventual goal is to follow the model established by MLS powerhouses the Portland Timbers and Seattle Sounders. With both clubs starting play in division two, the promotion to the top tier in back to us, phone books have long since been replaced by the other technology, and boxing long ago gave up its status as a sport that fans will wait for and love and clamor for until its VIPs decide to finally grace them with the right fight. In 2011, you keep up or you re done. And, guys, you re getting closer and closer to being finished every single day. This makes Mayweather s sortof-a-promise to fight Pacquiao problematic, particularly as boxing gives ground to mixed martial arts. The UFC consistently delivers fights, requires fighters to fight other fighters in an effort to ensure the right showdowns, and cultivates a brand and business model centered around keeping fans happy. Boxing has slipped from mainstream to niche. Boxing needs this fight. It s ludicrous it has not happened. There is money to be had for the fighters huge money; there is a public perhaps still able to be wooed by these two dynamic fighters; there is a sport to be given a muchneeded shot in the arm. So enough, guys. Particularly you, Floyd. None of this biggest fight possible talk or vague little guy bull crap. Floyd Mayweather Jr. needs to say he s fighting Manny Pacquiao on May 5 and then fight him. Manny Pacquiao needs to say he s fighting Floyd Mayweather Jr. on May 5 and then fight him. It s 2011, guys. Get in the ring or get lost. major league soccer was in direct response to their success and the popularity among its fan base. Fortunately, we have very much expertise and we have an opportunity to work with unbelievable fans and in a great market place for what we re doing, Hitchcock continued. Unlike any other professional sports team, Scorpions FC was established with a very unique partnership with another city attraction, Morgan s Wonderland. For team owner, Gordon Hartman, there is no reason a good cause and family entertainment cannot come together. San Antonio is a big soccer city, but the great thing about Scorpions FC narrow search... page 3-B Jen Floyd Engel FoxSportsSouth.com Because the BCS likes to pretend it is in the business of putting the best two teams in the country together to play for the national championship and because the SEC recently has provided the best football, LSU vs. Alabama on Saturday basically has been called a friendly, a warm-up, an exhibition. Not intentionally, just by definition. It is likely the first in a best of two, with the second being played in January in New Orleans with a national championship on the line. The loser on Saturday loses nothing except possibly not being favored by Vegas in the rematch. It is all the talk this week, this idea of Nick Saban and Les Miles meeting again in a game that really matters. LSU and Alabama may deserve to play each other again, and I struggle to find any good argument why this is not the best game. But if the BCS is not going to have a playoff, they cannot have a rematch. A rematch violates the same flawed logic used against a playoff that the regular season is a single-elimination playoff and thus loses its magic if a postseason redo exists. Please let this happen. Please let LSU or Bama get jobbed. Because if the BCS prevents a deserving LSU or Alabama two of the best and most powerful programs in the nation currently from playing for a championship, there will be hell to pay. There may even be a playoff. Auburn Enough reason for playoffs... page 3-B The San Antonio Scorpions FC began play next spring and with the franchises latest additions their poised to succeed. (Continued from page 1-B) should have been the spark back in 2004 when they went 12-0 in the regular season but missed out on the BCS title game in favor of unbeaten USC and Oklahoma but there was not as much public outcry then. It is different now, all that is required is properly motivating a fan base willing to poison trees to inject themselves into this playoff debate. The BCS will have a hot mess on their hands. Because a really good team is going to lose Saturday, possibly the best team in the country, and by BCS logic that team should have no chance at a championship or avenging that loss. This, they tell us, is what makes college football great, what preserves the regular season from the abomination that is a postseason. The problems with a playoff are many, or so we are told. The havoc wreaked on the GPAs of the student athletes they purport to care so much about, the damage done to the fine upstanding folks who only sometimes use bribery in the running of their bowls and the damage to the sanctity of games like Saturday. Please explain how Bama-LSU is ruined if they play again? For a trophy? Yes, the problem with defending something indefensible is eventually you reach the point in the argument where the flawed logic self-immolates. A playoff does not ruin Saturday in Tuscaloosa. Scorpions FC narrow search... (Continued from page 1-B) anytime anyone buys tickets, concessions or merchandise, all proceeds go to support Morgan s Wonderland, Hartman said. With the team situated in the STAR Soccer Complex, Heroes stadium and even the land for the proposed stadium is all within walking distance of the theme park especially constructed for children Former Cardinals pitching great dead at 61 B.J. Rains FoxSportsMidwest.com Former St. Louis Cardinals pitcher Bob Forsch, who only a week ago threw out the ceremonial first pitch before Game 7 of the World Series, collapsed at his home near Tampa, Fla., and died Thursday night. Forsch, 61, died from an aneurysm in his upper chest, the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reported. We are deeply saddened by the sudden passing of Bob Forsch, Cardinals chairman Bill DeWitt Jr. said Friday, Bob was a one of the best pitchers in the history of our organization and a valued with special needs. Through sports, we can give [kids with special needs] the opportunity to be kids. That s what the foundation is all about and that s the whole idea behind San Antonio Scorpions FC, explained Hartman. As the city s most articulate and aesthetically pleasing women lined member of the Cardinals family. Having been with Bob just last week, we are all stunned by this news. The entire Cardinals organization extends its sincere condolences to Bob s wife, Janice; his two daughters, Amy and Kristin; and his countless friends. Forsch is the only pitcher in Cardinals history to throw two no-hitters. He ranks third on the team s all-time wins list with 163, trailing Bob Gibson (251) and Jesse Haines (210). Forsch also is third in strikeouts with 1,079. In 15 seasons (1974-88) with the Cardinals, Forsch went 163-127 and posted a 3.67 ERA. The right-hander helped the Cardinals to World Series appearances in La Prensa de San Antonio 3-B Nothing could ruin what is sure to be one of the best nights of the college season. The lack of a playoff does not exactly ruin college football either; what ruins it is the constant lying about the reasons. I d respect the whole thing a lot more if somebody just said, No, we are not getting a playoff because, as the Big 10 and SEC dudes always say, sharing the money with the little schools is idiotic and because those dudes in the blazers from the bowls give really good enticements and because we can. Instead we are left debating who should be playing for a championship instead of actually playing for a championship. A playoff is the only remotely sane way to determine who has the best team in any sport, anything else is ice dancing or gymnastics, which are not actually sports. They are not. Go ahead and email me, I am unlikely to be swayed. If a judge is involved and artistic impression matters, it is American Idol with muscular movements. Real sports have a winner and a loser, decided by the game they are playing and themselves and by playoffs whose participants are determined by games. Of course, that world does not exist. We live in a pre-playoff world in college football, with rematch dominating pre-game. I understand both sides of the issue, but in the end, you want to get the best two teams in the championship game, former Michigan coach Lloyd Carr said recently. What a fabulous idea. However should we decide? The most popular idea is to replay Saturday. It is not an awful idea unless, of course, you are one of the other undefeated teams in the country like Stanford, or Oklahoma State, or Boise State. It is especially bad for Boise because, well, they tend to get jobbed like this a lot. They go undefeated and somebody argues they do not deserve to play for a championship because the SEC is better, because they do not have LSU and/or Alabama on their schedule, because they do not play games like Saturday. Not that Saturday s game is a slam dunk ticket to a rematch. There is a lot of arguing about degrees. It should be played again, for the championship, only if it is a classic, only if it is close, which leads to more debate. How close? What defines classic? Who tells Stanford? It s interesting, South Carolina coach Steve Spurrier said on the weekly SEC conference call. I keep reading no rematch for these two teams. I m not so sure that s the truth or not. And I m not so sure a rematch, if they both win out, that there s anything wrong with that. Actually there is something wrong with that. It is like a playoff. And we were told that ruins the game. up for professional headshots and interviews with celebrity judges Chris and Jason from the Chris and Jason Show on ESPN The Zone 1250, the process was underway. With the finalists to be posted on the official Scorpions FC Facebook page, fans can vote for their top five entries with the winners to be revealed later. 1982, 1985 and 1987. He made two starts in the 1982 Fall Classic in which the Cardinals defeated the Milwaukee Brewers in seven games to win the World Series title. Forsch won 20 games in 1977, posted a 3.48 ERA and had eight complete games. The right-hander was traded to the Houston Astros during the 1988 season and played one final season with them in 1989. He posted 67 complete games in his career and had 11 seasons with at least 10 wins. Forsch spent the past few years as a minor league pitching coach in the Cincinnati Reds organization. Moyer primed for comeback at 49 Jon Paul Morosi and Ken Rosenthal FoxSports.com Forget comeback player of the year. Jamie Moyer might become the comeback player of the halfcentury. Moyer, who turns 49 later this month, is a free agent and has thrown for scouts twice recently, including Thursday in San Diego. So far, the left-hander is getting rave reviews. Same as he s been for the past 15 years as incredible as that may sound, one veteran scout said. He has a chance to pitch in the big leagues as a fifth starter and win 10 or 12 games. He s throwing 81 to 83 miles an hour, but he still knows how to make you look like an idiot. He doesn t need the money. But I think he has that fire burning in his belly. Another scout observed: It was amazing. He looked as loose, limber and free as he ever has. Moyer would be the oldest pitcher in the major leagues in nearly four decades; Hall of Famer Hoyt Wilhelm was 49 when he appeared in 16 games for the Dodgers in 1972. A comeback isn t all that farfetched, when you consider Moyer made 19 starts for the Phillies in 2010 (9-9, 4.84 ERA) before undergoing Tommy John surgery. It s an excellent sign that he s throwing off a mound less than one calendar year following the operation. Sources say the Mariners, Rangers, Royals, Rockies, Orioles, and Pirates are among the teams that have sent scouts to see Moyer. Despite Moyer s success in Philadelphia, he s probably best suited to pitch in pitcherfriendly ballpark on the West (Courtesy photo) Coast such as those in Seattle, San Diego, or Anaheim. Moyer is living in San Diego now and may have a preference for the Padres or Angels. But he also spent the largest share of his career with the Mariners, and they are in the market for at least one starter this winter. The Moyer Foundation, which helps children in distress, was founded in Seattle and remains headquartered there. Moyer is 267-204 with a 4.24 ERA in more than 4,000 bigleague innings. He ranks in between Hall of Famers Bob Feller (266) and Jim Palmer (268) on the all-time wins list. No fui yo. Te diré lo que mereces: When an alien lives with you in your land, do not mistreat him. The alien living with you must be treated as one of your native-born. 6 de noviembre de 2011 La Prensa de San Antonio 9-B When investing, face-to-face beats fingers on a keyboard By Jeremy Hahn These days, you can purchase just about anything you want on the Internet. However, you can still benefit from a human, face-to-face experience for some purchases such as your investments. And that s why you may want to work with a financial professional. Unlike a computer interface, a financial professional will take the time to truly know your situation today and then help you make adjustments tomorrow. Let s first look at two key areas a financial professional will consider today: Your risk tolerance By asking the right questions, a financial professional can help you determine if you re a moderate, conservative or aggressive investor and then recommend those investments that are suitable for your risk tolerance. Your time horizon If you re saving for a down payment on a new home you expect to purchase within two or three years, you may want an investment that offers significant preservation of principal. But if you re saving for retirement, and you re three decades away from it, you ll likely need investments that offer the potential for growth. Your financial Op-Ed: Two upcoming chances to make a difference By Sen. Carlos Uresti Next week you will have two opportunities to make a difference in someone s life, perhaps even your own. On Tuesday, Texas voters will decide the fate of 10 proposed constitutional amendments that touch on a wide range of issues. All of them are important, but four in particular deserve your attention and your vote on Election Day. Proposition 1 follows up on an amendment approved four years ago granting a full property tax exemption to veterans who are 100 percent disabled from their military service. Under this new amendment, the exemption would be extended to the veteran s surviving spouse. I urge Texas voters to vote yes on Proposition 1 and acknowledge the sacrifices made not just by our brave veterans, but their families as well. With much of Texas lingering in a devastating drought, Proposition 2 would take a step toward a more stable future in terms of water supplies. It would increase the bonding authority of the Texas Water Development Board, to a maximum of $6 billion, allowing for better planning and critical infrastructure upgrades. advisor can help you choose the mix of short- and long-term investments that can help you make progress toward all your goals. Now, let s look at the types of milestones that a financial professional can help you with as your life progresses: New child When you bring a new child into your life, you also add new responsibilities. Do you have sufficient life insurance? Do you plan on helping the child pay for college? If so, what college funding vehicles should you consider? A financial professional can help you answer these questions. New spouse Whether Proposition 3 would expand access to fixed interest rate loans for Texas college students. The Hinson-Hazlewood College Access Loan Program has provided low-interest loans to more than 340,000 students since 1965, and this initiative would allow even more students to fulfill the dream of going to college. Proposition 6 would allow more revenues from the Permanent School Fund to be spent on public education without harming the endowment s principal. Money for this fund comes from state, land and mineral rights, and it is used to fund classroom instructional materials and technology to school districts on a per-student basis. Passage of this amendment would provide some much needed relief to Texas school districts grappling with a $4 billion budget cut. Constitutional amendment elections typically don t attract much voter interest. Secretary of State Hope Andrade predicts that only about eight percent of registered voters will turn out. I urge voters across District 19 to prove her wrong. Many people don t believe there is much at stake for them in a constitutional amendment election. Obviously this is not the case. If you want a secure water supply, an adequate public education system and some financial help sending your children to college, this is one election you shouldn t pass up. For more information on all 10 proposed amendments, go to the Secretary of State s website at www.sos.state.tx.us. Now, about that second opportunity to make a difference. Nov. 11 is Veterans Day, the day we set aside to honor the brave Americans who fought to keep us free. If there is a veteran in your family or living next door, don t let the day pass without telling them how proud and grateful you are for their sacrifice. And it would be great if you could tell them, I voted for Prop. 1! you re getting married for the first time, or you re remarrying, you ll have to reconcile your financial picture with that of your new spouse. A financial professional can review both your situations and possibly recommend ways for you to reduce debt, eliminate redundancies in your investment portfolios and consolidate insurance coverage. Career change When you change jobs, you may have to make many investment-related decisions: Should you move the assets from your old employer s 401(k) to an IRA? Or should you roll over your old 401(k) to your new employer s plan, if a rollover is allowed? Knowing your options when you leave your job can help you make the right choice for your retirement savings. A qualified financial professional can help you review and understand your rollover options. Retirement Once you retire, you ll have several issues to consider: How much can you withdraw from your investments each year? From which accounts? Should you rebalance your portfolio to provide more potential sources of income? What about the transfer of your wealth? A financial professional who is familiar with your situation can help you make the right moves to enjoy the retirement lifestyle you ve envisioned.
