For Chris ans, it is not just a single day (Dec. 25), but an extended liturgical season of joy and celebra on, involving many different symbols and tradi ons, special music and ac vi es, which vary significantly among different countries and cultures. Here are a few interes ng things to know about Christmas: WHEN AND HOW LONG IS CHRISTMAS? Christmas Day, liturgically called "The Solemnity of the Na vity of the Lord" in the Catholic Church, technically includes both Christmas Eve (Dec. 24, a er sunset) and Christmas Day (Dec. 25) itself. For religiously observant Chris ans, however, Christmas is not just one day, but an en re season, las ng anywhere from 12 days to 40 days in different ecclesial tradi ons. In the modern secular world, Dec. 26 already begins the "a er-christmas" sales, and Christmas decora ons are o en removed before New Year's Day! The "Christmas Season" (for shopping, decora ng, par es, music, etc.) used to begin just a er Thanksgiving Day, but now seems to begin just a er Halloween (Oct. 31), if not before! When people hear about the "Twelve Days of Christmas" (or sing the song by that tle), they might think it refers to the last 12 shopping days before Christmas. In most Chris an tradi ons, however, the "Christmas Season" properly begins with Christmas Eve (a er sunset on Dec. 24), while the "Twelve Days of Christmas" refers to the period from Dec. 25 to Jan. 5. In different Churches, the Christmas Season might end on Jan. 6 (the tradi onal date of the Feast of the Epiphany), or might last un l the Feast of the Bap sm of the Lord (usually the Sunday a er Epiphany), or might even last all the way to Feb. 2 (the Feast of the Presenta on of the Lord, 40 days a er Dec. 25).

Page 3 www.stritaparish.org December 18, 2016 God intervenes in the Dios interrumpe en la life of St. Joseph. His vida de San José. San intention had to José tenia la intención de change with respect to dejar a su esposa después de saber que estuvo Mary his young wife. Are we ready for the surprises and changes that this Christmas will bring? My first Christmas here was 2008. I recall being quite surprised at how many people travelled during Christmas. Our snowbirds who had just arrived headed north, while the Mexican community headed to Texas, California and back to Mexico. My family never even thought to travel during this time of year. But life changes! To my surprise I find myself travelling on this fourth Sunday of Advent. I was invited by Holy Cross to give a retreat to our novices (seminarians) in Peru. For religious orders being a novice is a step along the way in our formation. Diocesan priests would not have this in their formation years. The men in our novitiate (pictured below) in Peru are from Mexico, Peru, Chile and Brazil. They started last January and now have all been recently approved to move ahead in their formation process. Some are in formation to become religious brothers others to become priests. Please pray for them and me as I walk with them for a few days on retreat. I will gratefully be back on Wednesday this week to celebrate Christmas here. Like St. Joseph God intervenes and our lives change in surprising ways. His changed drastically. Let us take this last week of Advent to prepare our hearts for Christmas and whatever surprises the child Jesus has in store for us! Merry Christmas!!Feliz Navidad! Fr. Dan Kayajan, CSC Padre Daniel
