As nursing leaders move upward in the organization, the decisions, the issues, and the projects become increasingly complex and multifunctional. The program content is specifically designed to address this complexity and includes identifying the key stakeholders and influencing their behavior, learning to manage resources, and knowing when to terminate a task force or project. Small group work is used to enhance the opportunities for learning and applying the lessons from the classroom. Faculty members participating in the Wharton Nursing Leaders Program have been chosen not only for their expertise in a particular content area but also their vast experience working with senior clinician executives. WHO SHOULD ATTEND This program is for higher-level nurse managers who are preparing for the role of CNO. Specifically, an individual attending this program must meet two of the three following criteria: Reports directly to the chief nursing officer of the organization. Has multi-unit fiscal and management responsibilities. Manages direct reports who have supervisory responsibility. GRANT, PhD Faculty Director Professor of Management The Wharton School Recently named one of the world s top 40 business professors under 40 by Poets and Quants, Prof. Grant s expertise covers leadership, organizational change, employee motivation and engagement, negotiations, collaboration and team effectiveness, personality and self-awareness, and networks and social capital. KATHY PEARSON, PhD Learning Director Adjunct Associate Professor, Operations and Information Management Department The Wharton School Kathy Pearson, PhD, serves as an adjunct associate professor in the Operations and Information Management Department at the Wharton School. She has taught operations management courses in the MBA program and Executive Master s of Technology Management program as well as probability and statistics, simulation modeling, and other courses for the department and the University of Pennsylvania. In addition, Dr. Pearson is a senior consultant and director, Executive Education, for Decision Strategies International (DSI), a management consulting firm focused on scenario-based strategic planning and decision making. She specializes in subject areas such as critical thinking, scenario planning, strategic decision making, project management, and stakeholder analysis. Dr. Pearson has also worked with executives from a wide variety of industries and has taught at CEDEP at INSEAD in Fountainebleau, France. JOHN AUSTIN, PhD Senior Consultant Decision Strategies International (DSI) John Austin is a Senior Consultant in Executive Development for Decision Strategies International (DSI). Prior to joining DSI, John helped launch two companies based on his research, Aptient Research and Training, and YourWebView, LLC. He has been on the faculty at the Smeal College of Business at Penn State University and at The University of Washington and has taught executives at Wharton and Duke Corporate Education. John has a B.A. in economics from The Johns Hopkins University and a Ph.D. in management from Boston College. Dr. Austin is a thought leader in the areas of team leadership, knowledge transfer in teams, and organizational change implementation. His research on knowledge-based decision making teams is widely cited in the academic literature as is his work on the strategic actions of internal change agents. Page 3 of 5
Dr. Austin is an award winning teacher with experience teaching undergraduates, MBA students and practicing managers. John has conducted training on change management, team performance, decision making, leadership, creativity, and strategic planning. His experience with individuals at all levels of organizations enables him to translate broad strategies and concepts into actionable, engaging programs. Dr. Austin recently assisted in the design, and taught in, an innovative online Masters in Human Resources program for Penn State University. Dr. Austin s research has been published in leading management and applied psychology journals including Journal of Applied Behavioral Science, Journal of Applied Psychology, and Organization Science. In addition, he has presented his research at the annual conferences of the Academy of Management, American Psychological Association, INFORMS, and International Association of Business and Society. John s work has been recognized with three Best Paper awards from the Academy of Management. Dr. Austin s work has been mentioned in a number of media outlets including CNN, The Wall Street Journal and Barron's. JOSEPH PERFETTI Principal Consultative Education Partners (CEP) Joseph Perfetti is a subject matter expert in corporate finance and strategy who has delivered over 1200 teaching days over the past 21 years for leading corporations and consulting firms including McKinsey & Co, Lockheed Martin, Sun Microsystems, Citibank, and Delta Air Lines. Mr. Perfetti is a partner in the consulting firm CEP LLC focusing on financial consulting and education for large organizations. He currently serves as a Lecturer at the RH Smith School of Business at the University of Maryland and teaches Equity Analysis at the MBA and undergraduate level as well as executive education programs for the Aresty Institute of the Wharton School. Mr. Perfetti has authored three financial CD ROMs including the award winning Why Finance Matters. A serial entrepreneur, he started Intelliworks Inc., a venture-backed CRM company focused on higher education and an online knowledge sharing company.
