Saint Charles Parish San Diego / Imperial Beach Page Two From the Pastor Have you ever noticed that some of the words we use in the Mass are not in our native tongues whether that be English, Spanish, or even Latin? The Mass still contains some words in Greek and in Hebrew. For example, at the Penitential Rite we say Kyrie Eleison which is Greek for Lord (Kyrie)/Christ (Christe) have mercy (eleison). It s a Greek expression that we have had in the Mass for close to two thousand years and we still use it today to keep us mindful of our roots and the fact that the Church is much larger than just the English and Spanish speaking parts of the world. There is another expression that we use at Mass and is appropriate to speak about today because they used it during Jesus entry into Jerusalem just before his passion, death, and resurrection. That is the word Hosanna. Holy, holy, holy is the Lord God of hosts. Heaven and earth are full of your glory, hosanna in the highest. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest. First comes the thrice holy. This comes from Isaiah chapter 6 where the prophet has a vision of Heaven and sees God in his majesty and splendor. The seraphim sing and proclaim God is holy three times. Using the expression three times signifies that God is perfectly holy. We too join the angels in praising God and acknowledging his utterly perfect and magnificent holiness. But then we go on to say hosanna. Hosanna is a Hebrew word that literally means God save us. The word was used in Jewish worship centuries before Jesus was born and by the time Jesus lived the significance of the word had changed from God save us to glory and praise to God. And so we use it in like manner. After acknowledging God s holiness we praise, thank, and glorify him because he has sent us a savior, THE SAVIOR, Christ the Lord. Indeed, blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord, hosanna in the highest!

We know that You have made them priests in the likeness of your own priesthood. You have consecrated them, set them aside, anointed them, filled them with the Holy Spirit, appointed them to teach, to preach, to minister, to console, to forgive, and to feed us with Your Body and Blood. Yet we know, too, that they are one with us and share our human weaknesses. We know too that they are tempted to sin and discouragement as are we, needing to be ministered to, as do we, to be consoled and forgiven, as do we. Indeed, we thank You for choosing them from among us, so that they understand us as we understand them, suffer with us and rejoice with us, worry with us and trust with us, share our beings, our lives, our faith. We ask that You give them this day the gift You gave Your chosen ones on the way to Emmaus: Your presence in their hearts, Your holiness in their souls, Your joy in their spirits. And let them see You face to face in the breaking of the Eucharistic bread. We pray to You, O Lord, through Mary the mother of all priests, for Your priests and for ours. Amen.
