2 Capítulo 6B: Affirmative tú commands Use affirmative tú commands when talking to friends, family, young people, and other individuals that you would refer to as tú. FORMULA: EXAMPLES: affirmative tú command = present tense tú form "s" OR affirmative tú command = present tense él/ella/ud. form INFINITIVO él/ella/ud. AFFIRMATIVE TÚ (tú form s ) COMMAND hablar habla Habla! leer lee Lee! escribir escribe Escribe! EXCEPTIONS: INFINITIVO él/ella/ud. AFFIRMATIVE TÚ (tú form s ) COMMAND hacer hace Haz! poner pone Pon! Jorgito, pon la mesa! Jorgito, haz tu cama! Hablar yo hablo nosotros/nosotras hablamos tú hablas vosotros/vosotras habláis él, ella, Ud. habla ellos, ellas, Uds. hablan Use either one of these to create the affirmative tú command tense.

FORMULA: present-tense conjugation of estar + the present participle ESTAR: to be (I am, you are, he/she is, we are, they are, you (plural) are) yo estoy nosotros,-as estamos tú estás vosotros,-as estáis él, ella, Ud. está ellos, ellas, Uds. están + PRESENT PARTICIPLE: -ing -ar: stem + -ando lavar lav- + ando lavando -er: stem + -iendo comer com- + iendo comiendo -ir: stem + -iendo vivir viv- + iendo viviendo ** IRREGULAR VERB: leer (to read) leyendo Recuerdas? You use the present tense to talk about an action that regularly takes place, or that is happening now. Paco lava los platos. Paco washes the dishes. Paco is washing the dishes.

5 STEM-CHANGING VERBS You have learned about O/U UE stem-changing verbs EXAMPLES: jugar, costar: to cost, poder, dormir, almorzar: to have lunch DORMIR: to sleep yo duermo nosotros,-as dormimos tú duermes vosotros,-as dormís él, ella, Ud. duerme ellos, ellas, Uds. duermen My sisters sleep a lot on the weekends. Mis hermanas duermen mucho los fines de semana. You have learned about E IE stem-changing verbs EXAMPLES: preferir, querer: to want, pensar: to think, empezar: to begin, tener (tengo), venir (vengo) PENSAR: to think, to plan yo pienso nosotros,-as pensamos tú piensas vosotros,-as pensáis él, ella, Ud. piensa ellos, ellas, Uds. piensan I think (that) math class is very difficult. (Yo) Pienso que la clase de matemáticas es muy difícil. E I stem-changing verbs EXAMPLES: pedir: to ask for/request/order, servir: to serve, repetir: to repeat, decir: to say/tell (digo) E I stem-changing verbs follow the same rules as UE and IE stem-changing verbs. The e becomes an i in all forms EXCEPT nosotros/as and vosotros/as.

Las chicas piden (el) helado en el café. servir: to serve yo sirvo nosotros,-as servimos tú sirves vosotros,-as servís él, ella, Ud. sirve ellos, ellas, Uds. sirven The restaurant serves delicious pizza. El restaurante sirve pizza deliciosa. decir: to say/tell ** This verb also has an irregularity in the yo form. It is a YO-GO verb! ** yo digo nosotros,-as decimos tú dices vosotros,-as decís él, ella, Ud. dice ellos, ellas, Uds. dicen They are saying that the test is very difficult. Los estudiantes dicen que el examen es muy difícil. 1. We re asking for soup. Nosotros pedimos (la) sopa. 2. Do you all (ustedes) serve iced tea? Ustedes sirven (el) té helado? 3. I always ask for cheese pizza. (Yo) Siempre pido (la) pizza de queso. 4. They serve a lot of food. Ellos sirven mucha comida.
