Jean Brugger Foundation delivered school supplies to 4 schools in rural communities benefiting 222 primary grade students and their teachers. These donations were received from friends from FAJB and tourists visiting San Juan del Sur early this year. Scholarship students assisted in the preparation and delivery of the school packets one for each child. Benefiting communities: Tortuga, Pochote, San Antonio Sur - (El Ostional). Due to lease renewal difficulties, Mary O'Hanlon and husband Gianmaria will be closing the doors at the current location and taking some time off. El Colibri has been one of most popular restaurants in San Juan del Sur for 10 years. Work is progressing at San Juan del Sur Cervecería in the old Jerry's Pizza location. The brewing equipment is in the country and it shouldn't be too long before it is installed and the beer is flowing. Jean Sale in the Central Park - Almost new jeans, t-shirts, shoes and blouses will be sold cheaply in the Central Park in front of the Tourist Office beginning at 9:30 a.m. this Sunday, March 23rd. The Adult English Classes are sponsoring the sale to raise money to buy roofing materials for Los Barbudos School. Christian Surfers were all set to take over the old library space but for now anyway, they will be continuing to hold their regular Bible Study in the upstairs meeting room at El Globo at 6:00 pm on Sunday's. Next up on the Happy Hour Wine Tasting circuit is El Bocadito. Friday 28th March from 5pm to 7pm. $10 gets you 4 generous pours and appetizers paired with each one. The local branch of International Rotary Club gets a few dollars too. The Start of Summer! Under the proposed reform, the office will control all logging requests as well as monitor logging businesses. In effect it will assume forest management throughout the national territory. The proposal comes after reports indicate that Nicaragua is losing about 75,000 hectares of forest per year due to the irrational and illegal exploitation. 43% or over 55,000 square kilometers of Nicaragua's land mass is covered in forest. Electricity The Nicaraguan Energy Institute (INE) has announced that there are no plans to increase household electricity rates for the remainder of David Castillo, President of the INE says that government energy sector policies will ensure the stability of Bunker Fuel Oil (from Venezuela). Not Fabergé - Two Ukrainians recently trying to leave from the Augusto C. Sandino International Airport raised the suspicions of Drug Enforcement Officers. As a result, both were detained for further examination and medical checks. Later, at the Carlos Roberto Huembes Hospital, Doctors found that one of the accused had 18 oval latex wrapped packages ( eggs ) inside of him. A laxative was administered and later police recovered grams of cocaine. An initial hearing is set for March 26th. Bank Cheques The Central Bank of Nicaragua (BCN) has standardized the sizes and quality of cheques that are permitted to be used by Nicaraguan banks. The new th cheques, in use since March 15, contain security measures such as a new type of paper with watermarks, visible and invisible fibers and special features printed on the paper. They acknowledge that it will take some time to switch customers over to the new system. Thumbs Up by LA Times In a March 7th article, Rosemary McClure (Travel writer) says; Nicaragua is emerging as a premier tourist destination. Despite going on to describing Nicaragua as "the next Costa Rica" (a comment that grates with most Nicaraguans), she expounds about the country's charm, nature, surfing beaches, volcanoes, tropical forest and biodiversity. See article here: vel/la-tr-nicaragua /2 The Red Cross - That international symbol of help, is looking for some help of its own to provide services to 139 different locations for the upcoming Semana Santa or Easter Week. The Beach Plan 2014 is 4.5 Million Córdobas short of its 6 Million Córdoba target. A big part of the expense is feeding the 2,000 volunteers. The Nicaraguan Red Cross says that they will have to make adjustments to their coverage and may not be able to cover the costs of the volunteers at all beach resorts. The Plan is 6 days in total and requires 2,000,000 Córdobas just in subsistence for the volunteers. Sixty vehicles are used in the plan which requires an expenditure of 360,000 Córdobas. Telethon - The preliminary numbers show that once again, the TELETON (as it's known here) has surpassed its target with well over 24 Million Córdobas collected across the country. Every year Nicaraguans and visitors get a friendly shake-down of all of their change as they pass by the various locations set up as collection points. An army of school age helpers go out on the hunt for more donors in each of the barrios. These Volunteers (9,000 in total) play a crucial role in the success of the Teleton which hopes to provide more than 120,000 disabled children with support during the next year. Minimum Wage - The semi-annual minimum wage negotiations reached an impasse and it was up to the government to decide the increase in the nine minimum wage sectors. Last Monday, MITRAB did exactly that with an award of 10.77% for farm workers and 10.27% for the other sectors (except SME s who will get 9.8%). Zona Francas already had their increase set at 8% in January.

Bajo la propuesta de reforma, la oficina va a controlar todas las solicitudes de registro así como supervisar a las empresas madereras. En efecto asumirá la gestión forestal en todo el territorio nacional. La propuesta llega después de que los informes indican que Nicaragua está perdiendo alrededor de hectáreas de bosques por año debido a la "explotación irracional e ilegal". El 43% o más de kilómetros cuadrados de tierras de Nicaragua o más están cubiertos de bosques. Karla García por haber estado de cumpleaños el 16 de marzo de parte de su familia y su amiga Rebeca que Dios la bendiga son nuestro mejores deseos. San Juan del Sur Day School - Ready to Graduate! When founders Julie Speier and John Crilly first moved from New York City to San Juan del Sur, Julie (a seasoned educator) recognized the need for a high quality school, with low student-teacher ratios, a sustainable curriculum, English language learning, and highly qualified educators trained to work with a diverse student body. In 2009, the San Juan del Sur Day School opened with 1 teacher, 6 students and a half day program. Five years later the school has matured into a top quality primary school with 54 students, aged 18 months to eight years, 1 director, 4 lead teachers, a Spanish teacher, ESL instruction, and 2 teaching assistants. In short; a huge success! But with this growth comes the need to expand the space. A high class problem but one that needed to be resolved nonetheless. That is where Finca las Nubes became involved and thanks to a generous donation of land, the San Juan del Sur Day School now has the permanent area they can build on and create a school campus that will continue to grow with the children and which will ultimately service children from pre-kindergarten all the way through the 12th grade. The goal is to raise $150,000 over the next two months for the materials and construction of Phase 1 of the campus which includes a 5-classroom primary school building, furniture, parking lot, and a playground. Donations will go directly to materials and labor, leaving the school's expenses (salaries, maintenance, school supplies, food, lawyer fees, taxes etc.) to be covered by tuition payments. A large part of the success of the school (which has resulted in the need for more space) is the unprecedented numbers of Expatriates moving to Nicaragua and relocating with young children, as well as families having their children here in San Juan del Sur. Of the 54 students currently enrolled in the school, approximately one quarter are local Nicaraguans, one quarter are "expats" and the other half have one Nicaraguan and one expat parent (hailing from Canada, U.S., Russia, Ukraine, Germany, Costa Rica, Holland, Switzerland, Spain, Cuba and Ireland). The vision is to continue to grow with the enrolled students as well as keep up with the demand from those relocating to San Juan de Sur. 15 P March 2014 Del Sur News 20 - Marzo 2014 P.15 San Juan del Sur Day School listo para graduación Cuando Julie Speier y John Crilly fundadores primero se mudaron desde Nueva York a San Juan del Sur, Julie (una educadora) reconocieron la necesidad de una escuela de alta calidad, con docentes alumno-instructor bajo un programa sostenible, el aprendizaje del idioma inglés y educadores altamente calificados entrenados para trabajar con un alumnado diverso. En 2009, la escuela Day de San Juan del Sur abrió con 1 maestro, 6 estudiantes y un programa de medio día. Cinco años más tarde la escuela ha madurado en una escuela primaria de calidad superior con 54 estudiantes, de 18 meses a ocho años, 1 director, 4 maestros, un profesor de español, instrucción de ESL y 2 asistentes de enseñanza. En pocas palabras; un gran éxito! Pero con este crecimiento viene con la necesidad de ampliar el espacio. Un problema de clase pero que necesita ser resuelto sin embargo. Ahí es donde Finca las Nubes se involucra y gracias a una generosa donación del terreno, la escuela Day de San Juan del Sur tiene ahora la zona permanente donde pueden construir y crear una escuela que seguirá creciendo con los niños y que en última instancia dará servicio a niños de pre-kinder hasta el grado 12. La meta es recaudar $ en los próximos dos meses para los materiales y la construcción de la fase 1 del campus que incluye la construcción de una escuela de primaria con 5 aulas, muebles, aparcamiento y un parque infantil. Las donaciones irán directamente a materiales y mano de obra, dejando a los gastos de la escuela (salarios, mantenimiento, útiles escolares, alimentos, honorarios de abogado, impuestos etc.) para estar cubierto por los pagos de matrícula. Una gran parte del éxito de la escuela (que se ha traducido en la necesidad de más espacio) es el número sin precedentes de expatriados hacia Nicaragua y reubicación con niños pequeños, así como las familias con sus hijos aquí en San Juan del Sur. De los 54 estudiantes actualmente matriculados en la escuela, aproximadamente una cuarta parte son locales nicaragüenses, un cuarto son "extranjeros" y la otra mitad tienen un padre nicaragüense y uno de los padres expatriados (provenientes de Canadá, U.S., Rusia, Ucrania, Alemania, Costa Rica, Holanda, Suiza, Cuba y España).
